I feel that the main difference here is that while I experienced the actions of my parents as unfair and cruel while it happened, I’ve now come to the conclusion that those were only to help me once I lived on my own. Things like forced socialising, going for walks, going to the gym, etc…

However, what your parents are doing is trying to change your opinions to the same ones they have, because that’s all they’ve ever known. In their minds they just want what’s best for you (I hope), but they are using their own prejudices instead of actual facts.
