  1. Number 4: Which of the following is an important consequence of British domination for the Nigerian political system?
  2. Answer chosen: E. Ethnic politics already in place in Nigeria broadened and intensified under the British.
  3. Reason: This answer seemed the best, as none of the others fit based on what we have talked about and read. The British did not introduce Shari'a to Nigeria, as Islam had gained influence there centuries before the British arrived. The British also introduced individualism, whereas collectivism for the good of the tribe had been more important prior to the colonial period. Ordinary Nigerians did not prosper under the British, who provided rewards for certain individuals who did as they wanted, such as the warrant chiefs, and whose introduction of individualism made people more likely to work only for their own benefit and ignore the needs of others. Furthermore, while the British may have introduced a new structure for democracy, they did not introduce the overall concept: it was common for tribes to make decisions as a group and to require the input of its members as much as possible.
  4. Correct answer:
  5.
  6. Number 9: Nigeria's civil society is undeveloped largely because...
  7. Answer chosen: D. The state controls almost all aspects of life.
  8. Reason: I chose this answer with para-statals and the country's history of military rule in mind, as under the latter, people had very little power to act as they might choose to independently- something that is still lacking- because the government had control, even if the control was not well-executed for a majority; while para-statals were nominally separate from government jurisdiction, but are in reality being closely tied to what the governments wants. Given that they are responsible for things like basic utilities, that would give the government a great deal of control in everyday life.
  9. Correct answer: B. No serious attempts have been made to establish private organizations.
  10. Reason for correction: Though some attempts at forming private groups to improve society's functions have occurred, none of them have been “serious” enough to have true results. Though many interest groups and organizations do exist, conflict between them- such as among groups representing different ethnic groups or religions- make it difficult for them to cooperate and achieve greater overall successes. Fragmentation makes it difficult for a civil society to be cohesive.

  12. Number 10: What abrupt change did the Fulani bring to Nigeria in the early 19th century?
  13. Answer chosen: D. They cut off trade with almost all others outside the area.
  14. Reason: I did not remember information relevant to this answer for the most part; but I did know that no conquest of southern Christian states had occurred, that the British were the primary source of western influence, and that they did not create new fragments, because different groups had existed. Whether or not they created any sort of Muslim unity, I didn't recall, but the way state divisions across the north exist as a reflection of ethnic boundaries, as well, I didn't believe that unification was correct. So, I chose Answer D.
  15. Correct answer: E. They conquered the north and unified it as a Muslim state.
  16. Reason for correction: After re-examining the text book, this information can be found on page 349. The Fulani carried out a jihad in 1808 that resulted in the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate, which used the Hause language and Islam to help create unity in the area.
