- Hello,
- My name is Zeal An and I am writing to express interest in Duolingo’s Software Engineer Intern position.
- I can guarantee 12 consecutive weeks of availability in summer 2019.
- I am working towards a B.S. in computer science and a B.A. in linguistics at the College of William & Mary and will graduate in 2020.
- I have the most experience in web development. In frontend, I like making UIs usable, accessible, standards-compliant, and neat-looking. In backend, I can use MVC frameworks. My first was Ruby on Rails, but my current favorite is Django, which I could quickly pick up by generalizing MVC principles. I could easily apply this knowledge to any stack Duolingo might use.
- I have experience with Android, so I could contribute to Duolingo’s mobile apps. I’m also fluent in Java thanks to many years of Minecraft modding. Through Minecraft, I’ve learned to decipher unfamiliar codebases and use version control responsibly.
- Duolingo holds a special place in my heart as the resource I first used to teach myself German from scratch. I’ve always loved learning languages, so back when the website was new, I decided to test it out with a language I’d never even thought of before. I fell in love with both Duolingo and German, and used the site consistently until I went to college and was able to place in fourth-semester classes. I now TA a German class; I teach one section a week and sprinkle in tidbits I picked up years ago from Duolingo’s sentence discussions.
- As a linguist, I know how to break down a language into its parts, and as a language learner, I know what parts a learner needs to pay attention to. This perspective can help me understand how Duolingo’s users engage with the material.
