  15. check hydration hotkey,"Could you please check your pet's hydration status:
  16. 1. Lift up the skin on top of his / her shoulders and see how quickly it drops down when you let go. (It should go down immediately. If there's a 2 second delay or more then he/she's likely to be dehydrated.) Alternately, this can be done on the head (if your pet is very furry).
  17. 2. Check the gums - are they moist and pink? If you press on them with your finger and then let go, does the pink color return immediately or how many seconds is the delay? (It should return immediately.) You are welcome to send us a video of yourself doing these tests if you are uncertain of their results."
  18. deworming dogs hotkey,"I recommend deworming your dog with a broad-spectrum dewormer - treat twice - as soon as possible (if vomiting, then as soon as this has stopped and food and tablets kept down) and again 14 days later (NB). You can either ask your vet for Drontal Plus or Interceptor Plus, or you can purchase a broad-spectrum dewormer from a pet store e.g. Bayer Quad Dewormer from Petco.
  19.
  20. (Puppies should be dewormed regularly from two weeks of age. Healthy older puppies and adult dogs can either be dewormed regularly or they can be tested regularly for worms, and dewormed when evidence of worms is found.)
  21.
  22. Dogs with vomiting and/or diarrhoea, where the cause is unknown, should be dewormed twice, two weeks apart, as intestinal parasites are a common cause of vomiting and diarrhoea, and no test is 100% accurate. Please also deworm any other pets you have at home twice as well, and pick up/discard all stool in your garden regularly to prevent re-infection."
  23. deworming cats hotkey ,"I recommend deworming your cat with a broad-spectrum dewormer - treat twice - as soon as possible and again 14 days later (NB).
  24. You can either ask your vet for Profender (topspot), Drontal or Milbemax (tablets), or you can purchase a broad-spectrum dewormer Guardian Praziguard Plus for cats (tablets) from Walmart - this is suitable for kittens from 1 month of age.
  25. Please also deworm any other pets you have at home twice as well, and pick up/discard all stool regularly to prevent re-infection. For dogs, Drontal Plus, Milbemax (prescriptions dewormers) or Bayer Quad Dewormer (from Walmart) are good options."
  26. oralade hotkey,"If your dog will not eat/drink anything in the next 6 hours, then I can recommend purchasing Oralade GI Support and starting it as soon as possible. It is an oral rehydration supplement that provides essential electrolytes and microenteral nutrition. If your dog won't drink it voluntarily, then please syringe some into his mouth every 20-30 minutes during the day and in the evening. Work out the amount required per 24 hours based on the oral rehydration table given on the bottle, according to your dog's weight. It is available at vet clinics / hospitals over-the-counter."
  27. end of chat hotkey,"I'm going to end the chat now, but feel free to open a new chat if you have any further questions or concerns."
  28. vomiting questions about diet hotkey,"Have you changed your pet's diet at all recently or introduced anything new? (treats/human food)
  29. Are you aware of anything that your pet ate that he/she should not have e.g. garbage, a bone, chocolate, grapes, pieces of a chewed-up toy?
  30. Is your pet on any chronic medication or has he /she been on any medication in the last two weeks? If so, then for which condition?"
  31. diarrhoea only hotkey,"Please change your dog's diet to a bland rice based diet: either cooked chicken (no bones or skin) and cooked white rice (1:3) (and add 1-2 teaspoons of pumpkin per meal if your dog likes it)
  32. OR
  33. purchase a prescription intestinal diet from your vet e.g. Hills i/d (this is available in pellets and tins).
  34. Feed this only until the diarrhea has cleared up, usually within a few days, then mix in your dog's usual food over a few days until he/she only eats his/her usual food again.
  35.
  36. I can also recommend purchasing Pro-Pectalin paste or Purina Fortiflora for dogs, available at vet clinics, a pet store e.g. Petco, Walmart, or online (chewy.com, Amazon) - these products contain probiotics and help your dog to recover from the diarrhoea faster."

  40. vomiting hotkey,"It is recommended that your pet is kept off food for 6 hours to settle and calm the gastrointestinal tract.
  41. Try feed a bland, rice-based diet (cooked white rice and cooked chicken breast 3:1) or Hill’s I/D tin food (intestinal diet), available at your vet.
  42. It is best is to start off by offering lukewarm small quantities of food 4x during the day, and when eating well then increase the quantities and feed 3x the next day, and then 2x the following day. Please feed bland food only for 3 days, before reintroducing your pet's normal food gradually.
  43. Access to clean water is very important. Pets will voluntarily drink liquids when not too nauseous.
  44. If your pet is not voluntarily drinking much, then giving ice blocks often to lick or squirting small amounts of water (10-20ml) frequently into the side of the mouth with a syringe will help them to keep down water easier and reduce dehydration.
  45.
  46.
  47. If your pet continues to vomit in the next 12hrs, and especially if he / she can't keep water down, then please take your pet to a vet - the soonest appointment available that day, or alternatively go to an emergency vet if no appointments are available."
  48. spay and neuter information,"Although sterilization largely prevents diseases of the reproductive tract of dogs, research is showing that dogs are overall healthier if they are not sterilized.
  49. Sterilization causes very high LH levels ( luteinizing hormone), which is particularly a problem in large and giant breed dogs.
  50.
  51. For many owners (and welfare societies) sterilizing is the only feasible option, due to the unwanted behavior / effects of intact dogs (e.g. unwanted litters, female dogs coming into heat), but some owners may be able to cope with their dogs remaining intact and prevent unintended breeding. This is a lot easier in male dogs than in female dogs.
  52. Every pet owner needs to decide on this together with their vet.
  53.
  54. If unwanted behavior / effects from leaving dogs intact is to be avoided, then reversible medical sterilization, which does not cause high LH levels, can be done with an injection / implant (Suprelorin). Suprelorin has been registered for use in dogs in many countries in the world for years already; at the moment it is only registered for use in ferrets and mares in U.S. It may become available for use in dogs in the U.S. in the future.
