  1. Climbing in through the window of her bedroom, Nanami finally released her concentration on her powers, decelerating into a normal perception of time. The girl on her bed seemed, at this moment, much more frail than she had thought before. Was this girl really the same Akari that had fought with such conviction by her side? The same one that had stood before the school and given the commencement address without a second of hesitation? Had she really. . . No, Nanami thought, steeling herself. This was not the time for that. No matter what lie beneath the surface, the simple fact was that she had vowed to help this girl.
  2. Nanami thought back to the rooftop, to the things that they had said, what Akari had done. The anguish, palpable even to her, the desperation she could hear in every word. She knew these feelings well. She yearned for a way to reach out to her, but she couldn't think of how to help the poor, suffering girl in front of her. But she reached out, instead. She had asked for love, and Nanami knew what she must do. She would supply the pieces to fill the void in her heart. Akari needed love. She deserved it. She would not be left to cry, alone, each night. If she needed someone to love, she could do that much.

  4. Akari lay on an unfamiliar bed, staring a foreign ceiling. She was reeling, struggling to think of. . Anything, really, that would take her mind off of her dread. Twice, today, she had done something terrible. The first, unforgivable. The pit in her chest throbbed once again at the thought of it. She had become no better than her father. Treating another person as a punching bag for her own stress. Causing someone else pain because it made her feel better about her own failings as a person. And the second, a direct result of those failings. Something that, while not as unforgivable, could still never be taken back. A request born from the blackest pit of selfishness and greed. “Love me.”, she said, she asked, she demanded. She had taken this girl's kindness and shoved it back in her face with an ugly demand. Not to help her, not to save her, not even to be kind to her. She had demanded love from another, and threatened her own life to accomplish that wicked request.
  5. But, she thought, Nanami did not turn away. She didn't even hesitate. She had agreed to love her. But, she thought, that didn't mean anything. Of course she would agree. She had no way of telling what would happen if she refused. Akari felt sick. She knew that anything that came from this would be fleeting. Even now, Nanami was probably looking for a way out. She couldn't blame her. It had been a long time since Akari knew that she was unlovable. Undeserving. Kept afloat by a facsimile of love that she forced from a girl who needed her, who she now needed more than Nana-chan, or anybody else had ever needed her.
  6. “You don't have to do this. I'm sorry.” she croaked, trying to keep her voice steady. She knew Nanami would take the chance. She was used to rejection. This strained sort of friendship had become comfortable to her. They had been the only ones she'd ever had, after all.
  7. “No. I want to.” came the response. Measured. Steady. She looked down at the girl on her bed.
  8. “Then..” Akari began, reaching up, running a hand through Nanami's rich brown hair, her fingers separating errant strands of green from the rest. “You'll love me?” she asks, freezing in place. Prepared for the hammer to drop.
  9. Nanami stares at the face of the girl below her, at the tears welling in her eyes. “I made a promise.” she says. She feels the older girl's hand press against the back of her head, pulling her face closer to her own. Those tear-filled eyes search her face, a moments hesitation before their lips finally meet.
