  1. >“uuuugh… this sucks”
  2. >those were the first words that came out of my mouth as I got out of my truck in front my “new home”
  3. >I was going to live here alone whether I wanted to or not
  4. >in this shitty barren land my father calls a ranch
  5. >he got into trouble with the IRS, so he ran back to Spain and forced me to handle this lot he had just bought
  6. >he wants me to have it run perfectly with at least 100 heads of cattle by the end of the year or else I would be disowned
  7. >that’s all he told me
  8. >I wouldn’t mind being disowned by that old bastard, but he has a fat hoard of money with my name on it once he kicks the bucket
  9. >so, I guess got to comply just for now
  10. >no problem, 100 cows for just one person is no big deal
  11. >the problem is getting this place up and running
  12. >the shack that’s supposed to be my new house is pretty much just a big piece of rotting wood, that’s not good
  13. >the barn where the cattle are supposed to live in is moments away from turning into a rust cloud being taken away by the wind, that’s not good
  14. >the fields are covered with a tall and yellowish grass, that’s not good either
  15. >but the worst thing is that this whole place is surrounded by a pine forest
  16. >wild animals are going to be harassing my cattle 24/7 in a place like this, that’s pretty not good
  17. >this place is going to collapse in any moment now
  18. >guess I got to do what I can then
  19. >shit…
  20. >this inspection is over
  21. >I got to go back to retrieve all my shit so I can finally move in
  22. >as I got into my truck, I noticed another house in the other side of the dirt road
  23. >it looks uncared for but not abandoned
  24. >I finally start my truck and head towards the house
  25. >the city is the other way, but I want to check if I’m going to have neighbors or not
  26. >as I drive past, I notice the field of dying flowers next to the house
  27. >there’s a red pickup beater overgrowing with weeds
  28. >there’s clean furniture out in the front porch and there seems to be movement inside the house
  29. >there are people living here
  30. >maybe I should introduce myself…
  31. >…later
  32. >when I completely move in
  33. >that night my father sent me a text message
  34. >“I sent you a small loan of 100,000$, you are not getting anymore so don’t waste it”
  35. >that’s oddly nice of him
  36. >just got to hope it’s enough to put that shanty old place back on its feet
  37. >…and enough to get some starting cattle
  38. >…
  39. >…hold on…
  40. >…just making some calculations…
  41. >…oh fuck
  42. >god damn it, old man!
  43. >just half of that is enough to get the 100 heads of cattle
  44. >considering the price of cattle is 50$ per hundredweight…
  45. >that means I can get 100 cows, each one weighing around 1,000 pounds
  46. >no… that’s a bad plan
  47. >then I would have to survive the rest of the year with those cows and if something were to happen then I might not have enough money to recuperate
  48. >sigh…
  49. >I got to play the long game then
  50.
  51. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  52.
  53. >the next day
  54. >I go back, and I brought a moving truck with me
  55. >the moving guys help me move everything I need into the house
  56. >since I don’t want to pay them extra hours, I just get everything into the living room and tell the moving guys that I would take it from here alone and dismissed them
  57. >I wave at the moving truck as it leaves through the dirt road
  58. >which reminds me
  59. >I turn around to see that lonely little house among the pine trees
  60. >I hop on my truck and drive over
  61. >the furniture on the front porch is no longer there
  62. >definitely
  63. >there’s someone living here
  64. >I walk to the front porch and knock on the door frame
  65. >…
  66. >silence
  67. >well, I guess they don’t want to meet me
  68. >as I turn around to leave back to my truck, I hear the door creak open
  69. >I slowly turn around back to the house only to see a pair of eyes looking at me from the darkness from beyond the door
  70. >“um… hello?” I asked with a bit of a bad feeling running down my body
  71.
  72. >the door suddenly slams shut
  73. >a cacophony is metallic clinking behind the door reassures my bad feeling
  74. >those sound like an unnecessary amount of locks
  75. >the door slowly creaks open as the resident of the house makes itself visible
  76. >it’s a girl
  77. >with triangular ears and a puffy ringed tail
  78. >it’s a raccoon girl
  79. >she looks very disheveled though
  80. >her skin is pale
  81. >sunken golden eyes
  82. >hair is ungroomed
  83. >clothing is wrinkled and dirty
  84. >“h-hello?”
  85. >her voice is very raspy and tired
  86. >“hello ma’am, I recently moved to the lot down the other side of the road and I wanted to introduce myself, I’m really surprised to know there are other people living around here, I thought I was going to be alone out here”
  87. >she looks at me puzzled for a couple of seconds
  88. >she looks around and behind me before deciding to answer
  89. >“he-hello, my name is-is Jessamine…
  90. >she takes a deep breath before continuing
  91. >…did you rea-lly come alone?”
  92. >“…yeeees?”
  93. >“w-what’s your n-name?”
  94. >“my name is Anon de-
  95. >the moment the word anon escapes my mouth she begins to have a very violent coughing fit
  96. >she puts her hand over her chest as she leans on the door frame
  97. >“m-ma’am! are you ok?!”
  98. >she grabs the door and hides behind it
  99. >she waves me off as her coughs die down
  100. >“d-don’t come any closer!”
  101. >her voice sounds worse than before
  102. >I raise my open palms and back off
  103. >“m-miss? what’s the matter? are you ok?”
  104. >“yes! Anon what?!”
  105. >what’s wrong with this woman?!
  106. >“a-Anon de San Ustillo Segundo… b-but you can just call me Anon”
  107. >she peeks her head from the side of the door
  108. >she looks at me from head to toes
  109. >I think I can see a tear forming in one of her eyes
  110. >she sighs before opening the door again
  111. >“I’m sorry about that, it’s just that I’m really sick right now”
  112. >“no problem, everybody gets sick from time to time”
  113. >she gives me a little smile
  114. >a little smile that lasted a whole 0.00002 seconds before her face turned back into sadness
  115. >“so you are m-my new neighbor?”
  116. >“yeah, and it’s a pleasure to meet you miss Jessamine”
  117. >I extend my hand towards her
  118. >she takes a full two seconds to react and shake my hand
  119. >she gives me another flash smile
  120. >I pull out my wallet and give her a card with my info on it
  121. >“I’m going to be working on some remodeling on my new property, if you need anything you can call me, ok?”
  122. >she nods and takes the card
  123. >“it’s been a pleasure to meet you miss Jessamine”
  124. >she simply nods again and slowly retrieves herself back to her house
  125. >the clinking of the several locks is heard from behind the door once again
  126. >I walk back to my truck and drive off to my home
  127. >…phew…
  128. >…that was awkward as fuck, holy shit
  129.
  130. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  131.
  132. >the next four days go by without much incident
  133. >I have bought a pack of 10 grown cows that should be arriving in a few days along with some basic supplies
  134. >I also had some nerds from an agricultural college come take a look at the place
  135. >they charged me hell for making them come half a state only to look at bunch of dry grass
  136. >so at least I know it’s not the chemicals in the soil making my grass funky
  137. >but the fact that this place has stayed dried even though we are surrounded by a green and prosperous forest is kind of weird
  138. >speaking of which
  139. >remember what I said about wild animals harassing my cattle?
  140. >yeah, I saw a pack coyotes wandering the edge of the tree lines
  141. >by the time I got my rifle ready they had already left
  142. >from now on I’m going to need to keep an eye out for those fuckers at all time
  143. >don’t want them chewing on my beef
  144. >I’m halfway through installing one of the open field feeders when I spot the pack of coyotes coming back
  145. >luckily for me I had my rifle handy this time
  146. >I take aim and as one of the yotes spots me I pull the trigger
  147. >with a loud bang, the bullet rips a new orifice into the fucker
  148. >right where the lungs should be
  149. >it drops dead, being throw to its side by the might of my 30-30 Winchester and my skillful aim
  150. >I have the power of gunpowder bitches!
  151. >unsurprisingly the rest of the little shits scurry away into the woods
  152. >hopefully that will keep them away some time
  153. >now to deal with the body
  154. >I cross the fence and grab the dead coyote by its hind legs
  155. >I chuck it back over the fence and begin dragging it through my field
  156. >I’m going to take it to where I left my tools and bury it right outside my property
  157. >yes, I know I could have buried where I dropped it but that would mean I’d had to walk double the distance in going for my shovel and bringing it back
  158. >I’m lazy as shit so that’s a no go
  159. >the thin trail of blood the body leaves will dry and disappear with time
  160. >also, I think it’s good for the ground or some bullshit like that
  161. >don’t quote me on that though
  162. >I’m halfway through when I feel my phone vibrating in my pocket
  163. >I drop the yote and answer my phone
  164. >it’s an unidentified number but it’s local code so it may be someone I know
  165. >“hello? This is mister Anon, who’s calling?”
  166. >I hear a very loud gulp and shaky breathing before a familiar voice replies
  167. >“h-ello mister Anon, it’s y-your neighbor”
  168. >oh
  169. >it’s the raccoon girl
  170. >what was her name?...
  171. >Jessamine?
  172. >yeah it was Jessamine
  173. >“hello miss Jessamine, how can I help you?”
  174. >“I heard a l-loud bang a few minutes ago, I tried calling you once b-before but the signal w-asn’t good e-enough”
  175. >“yes, it was me. I had to take care of some vermin you see?”
  176. >“oh… o-ok, I just got a bit spooked by the noise, that’s all”
  177. >“yeah sorry about that, hope I didn’t interrupt anything”
  178. >“it’s ok, thanks for answering my call anyway”
  179. >“yeah no pro-
  180. >she hangs up before I can finish
  181. >damn, this girl seems to have some sort of aura of awkwardness around her
  182. >even through the phone I feel weird talking to her
  183. >not that I displayed it because I’m the fucking boss
  184. >I should probably check on that girls more often
  185. >she seems lonely and sad
  186. >anyway…
  187. >where was I?
  188. >oh yeah, the dead coyote
  189.
  190. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  191.
  192. >two days after the coyote incident the cattle I ordered online finally arrive in a truck
  193. >they were in pretty good shape
  194. >the basic supplies I mentioned in the past are a few instruments to take care of them and some bags of feed for them
  195. >the truck loaded them off a ramp into the field
  196. >since I’ve been watering it its color got a little more alive
  197. >still looks weird but at least it’s getting better
  198. >I picked up a bag of the feed and place it on wheelbarrow
  199. >they are heavy as shit so I’m not carrying it with my own hands
  200. >they follow me to the feeder
  201. >they seem to already know what’s up
  202. >that’s nice
  203. >when I’m done pouring as much of the dried food pellets into the feeder, the cows stick their heads in through the tubes and begin to eat it
  204. >since there aren’t enough holes for all of them, they seem to take turns
  205. >I go back to my house to let them get used to the place
  206. >on the distance I can see a figure standing on the porch of house on the hill
  207. >it’s that…?
  208. >hmmm
  209. >it’s surprising to see her outside
  210. >I don’t think I’ve ever seen her come out on her own until now
  211. >and that’s a little worrying
  212. >she turns to my direction and then walks inside
  213. >she probably saw me looking and decided to hide again
  214. >hmmm
  215. >…
  216. >I hop on my truck and close everything
  217. >I park on front of her house and knock on her door
  218. >she takes a bit but eventually comes out
  219. >she is wearing a pretty pink sundress and her ears are poking through a straw hat with a purple ribbon around it
  220. >“h-hello anon, what do you need?”
  221. >“hey, I see that you don’t go out much…
  222. >her cheeks start to blush and retreats a little
  223. >…so I was wondering if you would like to go out sometime?”
  224. >“like… I mean… thanks, I have plenty of free time but I don’t want to get in the way of-
  225. >“plenty of free time? Then why don’t we go out soon?”
  226. >“I-I meant that I’m free… uh… right now but I don’t know…”
  227. >“then lets go right now!”
  228. >“R-IGht… now?”
  229. >“mhmm, you already look lovely”
  230. >her cheeks goes from slight blush to beet red
  231. >“so what do you say?”
  232. >slowly nods and closes the door behind her
  233. >“o-ok… if you insist”
  234.
  235. >we both hop on my truck and head out into the city
  236. >it’s a decent distance away
  237. >the trip is completely quiet
  238. >Jessamine only looks forward and stares into the horizon
  239. >every time I move or turn to look at her, she becomes stressed
  240. >starts breathing more heavily and starts shaking
  241. >I break the silence with some casual questions
  242. >“how have you been recently?”
  243. >she flinches when she hears my voice
  244. >“I ah… I’m- I have been…?”
  245. >“are you ok?”
  246. >she begins to panic
  247. >her breathing gets heavier and she starts sweating
  248. >“look, if you would have preferred to stay alone, then with all confidence, you can tell me and I’l-
  249. >“yes”
  250. >well… that was blunt
  251. >I slowly bring the truck to a stop and prepare to make a three-point turn to head back to her house
  252. >just as I put my feet in the gas, Jessamine has a change of mind
  253. >“NO WAIT!”
  254. >I step on the brakes and turn to her
  255. >“what’s the matter?”
  256. >she is covering her face with her eyes
  257. >“are you ok?”
  258. >“yes, I’m sorry I’m sorry…. let’s go o-out to eat or what you s-said”
  259. >I sigh, pull on the parking brake and shut off the engine
  260. >“Jess, don’t force yourself, ok?”
  261. >“what do you mean?”
  262. >“I made you an offer, and that means that you have a choice”
  263. >she nods
  264. >an unsecure nod but it’s still something
  265. >“so, be honest with what you want. You don’t have to choose what will please me. Do what will make you happy, ok?”
  266. >she sniffles a bit before nodding again
  267. >“so… what do you prefer?”
  268. >she starts to breath heavily again
  269. >“I… I want to… go out to eat… with you”
  270. >“are yo sure?”
  271. >she nods again, this time with confidence
  272. >“right…”
  273. >start the truck and head into the city again
  274. >the trip is quiet again, except this time I feel more relaxed
  275. >I turn to look at Jess again
  276. >she still seems to be on edge
  277. >I move my hand from the shifter to her shoulder
  278. >she flinches and starts shaking
  279. >I start to rub her shoulder and then move to her back
  280. >her heavy breathing becomes stammered
  281. >“relax, Jess, you don’t have a thig to worry about”
  282. >she takes a deep breath and seems to calm down a little
  283. >“where do you want to go?”
  284. >she doesn’t reply
  285. >“I know there’s a nice steakhouse around here”
  286. >her breathing becomes stammered again
  287. >“n-no..”
  288. >“what’s the matter? don’t like the free peanuts? heheh-
  289. >I cut my chuckle when I see that she is in quiet distress
  290. >she looks like she’s on the verge of tears
  291. >I get the point and stop pushing with the steakhouse
  292. >“hey, I know about this nice Italian place called Basilico, how’s that sound to you?”
  293. >“I- I don’t know…”
  294. >“wait, I think they are closed due to remodelation”
  295. >“oh…”
  296. >man, this is awkward
  297. >I’m not good at carrying a conversation all on my own
  298. >we pass by the local university
  299. >that gives me an idea
  300. >there are usually some comfortable small joints around universities like this
  301. >and I just spotted a promising one
  302. >I stop right in front of the place
  303. >“hey, how do you feel about this one? San Biagio’s pizza parlor”
  304. >“p-pizza? ok”
  305. >“are you sure?”
  306. >“I- uh.. yes, yes I’m sure”
  307. >although she seems to hesitate on everything, I could sense a little bit of confidence in there
  308. >I still feel a bit worried about this girl
  309. >I gave her a reassuring smile and she tried her best to give me one
  310. >it’s fine
  311. >we get out of the truck and enter the restaurant
  312.
  313. >a waitress welcomes us and takes us to a vacant booth
  314. >I sit down and wait for her sit down beside me
  315. >instead she sits at the opposite side of the table
  316. >ok, if that’s how she’s comfortable
  317. >the waitress hands us a menu and tells us that another waiter will come soon to take our order
  318. >she then retreats back to the front door to greet any new would be costumers
  319. >the joint itself is pretty quiet
  320. >there’s plenty of people but everyone keeps to their booth
  321. >it’s quite nice actually
  322. >I hand Jessamine the menu
  323. >“here, you choose what you like”
  324. >“a-are you sure?”
  325. >“yes, I have a taste for everything”
  326. >“b-but what if you don’t like what I want”
  327. >“oh I’ll like it, don’t worry”
  328. >she gets a bit flustered and nervous
  329. >“are you ok Jess?”
  330. >“I- yeah it’s just that… uh”
  331. >she starts to get visibly frustrated
  332. >“what’s the matter?”
  333. >“I-I don’t know what I want”
  334. >“hold on, let me see”
  335. >she hands me the menu over
  336. >I open it up and start looking through
  337. >“what do you crave Jess?”
  338. >“I… uh… ve…ge…tables?”
  339. >“vegie burger?”
  340. >“y-yea-no! I mean I want some meat in it too”
  341. >“ah, look, here’s one you may like”
  342. >I give her the menu and point at the pizza I’m talking about
  343. >“the all-in-one?”
  344. >“mhmm, sounds good right?”
  345. >“y-yeah”
  346. >“okay, anything else you’d like?”
  347. >“I- uh… well I don’t have much money”
  348. >I wave my hand in denial
  349. >“don’t worry about it, it’s all on me”
  350. >“hng, well… you don’t mind if I…”
  351. >“absolutely not, go right ahead”
  352. >some silent minutes pass
  353. >another waiter walks over to us with a little notepad and a pen on her ear
  354. >“sorry for taking so long, it’s just that I thought you were already being served”
  355. >“oh it’s nothing to worry about, we are in no hurry”
  356. >“ok, what would you like?”
  357. >I look over and raise my chin at Jess
  358. >the waiter looks over to her with a big smile
  359. >“I uh… c-an I- we get the a-all in one aand some parmesan br-breadsticks?”
  360. >“sure, anything to drink?”
  361. >“I- uh”
  362. >Jessamine starts to browse through the menu
  363. >I raise my finger to get the waiter’s attention
  364. >“I’ll get a coke please”
  365. >“can or bottle?”
  366. >“can”
  367. >“I-I’ll get one of those too… p-please”
  368. >“sure, one all-in-one, parm breadsticks and two cans of coke”
  369. >“aha, thank you very much”
  370. >“no problem, your food will be ready soon”
  371. >she takes the menu from Jessamine and walks back to where she came from
  372. >I look over to Jess to see her breathing heavily and shaking
  373. >“h-hey are you ok?”
  374. >I see a tear form in one of her eyes
  375. >“I... I got scared”
  376. >“hmmm”
  377. >I stand up and walk around the table to sit beside Jessamine
  378. >I wrap my arm around her
  379. >she gasps at my touch before steading her breath
  380. >“why were you scared?”
  381. >“I-I felt like she was judging me”
  382. >“who? The waiter?”
  383. >she starts shaking again and nods
  384. >I start rubbing her back trying to calm her down
  385. >“don’t worry, she wasn’t judging you”
  386. >“b-but the way she w-walked over to us a-and stared at me, I-I can’t…”
  387. >“shhh, it’s her job to take our order, you are fine”
  388. >“I-”
  389. >“no one here is judging you”
  390. >she starts sniffling
  391. >I lean down a little to see her face
  392. >tears are rolling down her cheeks
  393. >oh boy…
  394.
  395. >I step up and walk around the table to sit beside her
  396. >as soon as I wrap my arms around her, she stops sobbing
  397. >“it’s ok… it’s ok…”
  398. >she stays completely still for a couple of seconds, then leans into me
  399. >we stay like this for a couple of minutes
  400. >I only break up the hug when I see the waiter coming towards our table with our order on a big platter
  401. >she lays it on our table
  402. >the pizza is still steaming, the cheese drooping between the slices
  403. >she hands us two cans of coke and our plates
  404. >good, this place uses proper plates instead of those shitty paper ones
  405. >I put one of the plates and a coke in front of Jessamine
  406. >for some reason I feel like we’re missing something…
  407. >“I’ll bring you the parmesan breadsticks in a minute”
  408. >ah, there we go
  409. >the waiter leaves for the kitchen again
  410. >Jess just stares at the pizza with wide eyes
  411. >…but instead of grabbing a piece, she just stares at it
  412. >I use my big brain to calculate which piece of the pizza is the biggest one
  413. >*bzzz* *pewauauagh* *fshew* *computer noises*
  414. >got it, it’s the piece exactly opposite to me
  415. >and it also happens to be fully loaded with toppings
  416. >I spin the aluminum platter around, burning my finger in the process
  417. >ouch worth it
  418. >I grab the biggest piece by the crust, burning the rest of my fingers in the process
  419. >ouch worth it
  420. >I pull the slice up, stretching the cheese
  421. >Jessamine follows my hand with her wide-open eyes
  422. >I can almost see her mentally saying goodbye to the slice of pizza
  423. >she clearly wanted it
  424. >I would say something like ‘you snooze, you lose’
  425. >instead I place the big slice on Jessamine’s plate
  426. >I’m a generous god
  427. >she takes the pizza slice and hesitantly takes a bite out of it
  428. >her expression immediately changes
  429. >from silent awe to silent joy
  430. >she notices me staring and composes herself
  431. >pretending as if the last 8 or so seconds didn’t happen
  432. >I can’t help but to crack a smile as I grab the second largest slice of pizza and put it on my plate
  433.
  434. >Jess takes no time to enjoy her slice of pizza
  435. >she’s being hasty but clearly enjoying it
  436. >her eyes have a glimmer of joy in them
  437. >it’s gratifying in a way
  438. >to know that I brought her joy with such an improvised plan
  439. >hmmm
  440. >I think that’s more of a testament to her situation than to my charisma
  441. >oh who and what did they do to you girl…
  442. >Jess turns to look at me and smiles
  443. >still, not a greatly confident smile but it’s her best so far
  444. >the waiter comes back with a platter with our sodas and the parmesan breadsticks
  445. >Jessamine’s eyes widen as the waitress sets everything on our table
  446. >she snatches a bread stick and bites into with her mouth full
  447. >she immediately stops and corrects herself
  448. >sitting straight and chewing slowly
  449. >she got carried away
  450. >it’s cute but…
  451. >it feels wrong
  452. >she shouldn’t feel to act like this
  453. >I need to know what happened to this girl
  454. >maybe not now
  455. >I’ll have to gain her trust
  456. >I just hope…
  457. >…
  458. >I don’t even know what I hope
  459. >“a-anon, are you ok?”
  460. >“mh? what? yeah I’m okay”
  461. >“oh, it’s just that you stared off l-looking sad”
  462. >“oh it’s just uh… my thinking face”
  463. >“oh… ok”
  464. >we continue eating quietly
  465. >by the end of the night only a quarter of the pizza remains
  466. >all the breadsticks are gone
  467. >Jess ate half the pizza, but I don’t know who dug more into the sticks
  468. >it was probably me
  469. >I like parmesan bread a lot
  470. >I call the waitress over
  471. >she takes the leftover pizza and then brings it bag in a doggie bag
  472. >pay with cash
  473. >leave a tip of whocares%
  474. >never liked tipping much anyway
  475. >that’s one of the few things I got from my dad
  476. >we leave the pizza place and get in the truck
  477. >streets have gone silent
  478. >not many cars on the roads
  479. >even less people walking around
  480. >good, I’ve heard things don’t tend to go well in this city when the sun goes down
  481. >start the truck and head back home
  482. >Jess stays quiet for most of the ride
  483. >when we get to the outskirts she lifts and hugs her knees
  484. >her eyes slowly getting heavier
  485. >until she finally falls asleep
  486. >I take the rest of the ride slowly
  487. >taking the smoothest road towards her house
  488. >park outside of her house
  489. >I grab the doggie bag and get out
  490. >then I walk around the truck and open Jessamine’s door
  491. >she doesn’t react at all
  492. >she’s out like a brick
  493. >I bite on the doggie bag and put my arms around her torso and under her knees
  494. >she is incredibly light
  495. >even after eating all that pizza
  496. >I carefully carry her inside her house
  497. >up the stairs and into her room
  498. >it’s…
  499. >…a mess
  500. >things all over the floor
  501. >weird stains on the walls
  502. >the bed is just a mattress on a wooden frame with curtains thrown over it
  503. >no pillows
  504. >a nightstand is flipped over and there’s splinters all around it
  505. >geez
  506. >I lay down Jessamine on her bed
  507. >she slowly curls into a fetal position and covers herself with her tail
  508. >her ears are pivoting erratically
  509. >her breathing gets choppy for a second before going back to normal
  510. >I slowly leave her room
  511. >grab the doggie bag from my mouth and walk down the stairs quietly
  512. >the railing is covered in a thick layer of dust
  513. >pass through the living room on my way to kitchen
  514. >everything is covered in dust
  515. >except the TV
  516. >it’s smashed and there’s still glass bits on the floor
  517. >the kitchen is just a counter with a sink and a fridge
  518. >there’s a space where there once was an oven
  519. >now only the grime it left behind remains
  520. >I open the fridge
  521. >the light inside flickers a bit before going out completely
  522. >there’s nothing inside anyway
  523. >nothing except a half-eaten jar of peanut butter
  524. >I can tell she’s been digging at it with her fingers
  525. >not even using a spoon
  526. >put the doggie bag in
  527. >sigh and scratch my head
  528. >well, I can spare some money
  529. >I’ll take her grocery shopping one of these days
  530. >leave and head to my own house
  531. >have a hard time sleeping tonight
  532.
  533. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  534.
  535. >several days later
  536. >the cows have been doing nice
  537. >they’ve been packing the pounds nicely
  538. >although I noticed one of them has a lame leg
  539. >she probably has a cracked hoof
  540. >I need to call a specialist to help me with that
  541. >in the meantime…
  542. >I’ve made sure to keep their barn clean
  543. >it avoids infections and makes them happy
  544. >I could also get one of those big brushes that have been becoming viral on the internet
  545. >they seem to like those
  546. >I’m pretty sure if I make them grow healthy and happy, I’ll be able to eventually sell them for more than what they are worth in weight
  547. >and all thanks to those special idiots who want to know if they burger had a good life before getting served
  548. >ehehehe…
  549. >…
  550. >fuck, that thought got weird on me…
  551. >hmm, maybe it’s not always the people around me that are the cause for those awkward moments that always seem to happen around me
  552. >…
  553. >no, it’s definitely not my fault
  554. >oh! speaking of awkwardness…
  555. >I grab some binoculars from the back of my truck and look over to Jessamine’s house
  556. >she’s…
  557. >…nowhere to be seen…
  558. >…of course
  559. >I walk over and walk up to her door
  560. >before I can knock on the door, I hear a faint sobbing to my left
  561. >huh?
  562. >I walk around the house to see Jessamine
  563. >she’s wearing a light sundress and no shoes
  564. >lying down on a bed of dead flowers
  565. >is she asleep?
  566. >I can’t tell…
  567. >is she just having a lie down?
  568. >my questions are answered when I step on the patch of dry flowers
  569. >they make a crispy crunch under my shoe
  570. >Jessamine’s ears shoot up
  571. >her tail puffs up and her body starts shaking
  572. >she starts to slowly turn her head around
  573. >I catch a glimpse of one of her teary eyes
  574. >it’s filled with terror
  575. >I step back and say softly
  576. >“hey, don’t worry, it’s me your neighbor”
  577. >she lets out a deep sigh and wipes her face
  578. >“h-hello Anon, what are you doing here?”
  579. >she sit up but doesn’t turn to face me
  580. >instead she looks down at the dead flowers
  581. >“I uh… I just came here to check on you”
  582. >“that’s… nice… o-of you”
  583. >“hey, don’t take this the wrong way but…”
  584. >her ears perk up again
  585. >“…I noticed that since I took you out to dinner, you have been more uh… you have gone out of your house more”
  586. >she finally turns to face me, she is visibly confused
  587. >“what I’m trying to say is, would you like to accompany me shopping?”
  588. >her visible confusion gets accentuated
  589. >“look… you don’t have t-
  590. >“ok”
  591. >“oh, uh, when do you think you’ll be… available?”
  592. >“I… tomorrow?”
  593. >“ok”
  594. >“…”
  595. >“…”
  596. >“…so um…”
  597. >“…”
  598. >“nice flowers?”
  599. >“they… they’re dead”
  600. >ANON YOU FUCKING IDIOT
  601.
  602. >she rubs her eyes a bit and stares at me
  603. >waiting for a response
  604. >“well… uh… we can fix them”
  605. >“you think they can be saved?”
  606. >I crouch down and touch one of the flowers
  607. >it snaps by the stem like a dry twig
  608. >the petals disintegrate when they hit the ground
  609. >“hmmm… probably not”
  610. >“oh…”
  611. >“and that wheat field…
  612. >I stand up and walk down to the small wheat field
  613. >the stems of the plants are drooping
  614. >the heads are small and some of them completely lack grain
  615. >…I’m a rancher, not a gardener, but I can still tell that these plants are in serious trouble”
  616. >“…oh…”
  617. >“hmm?”
  618. >I look back to see Jessamine running her fingers through the bed of dead flowers
  619. >a single tear falling from her eye into the ground
  620. >“um uh I mean uh”
  621. >fuckfuckfuckfuck
  622. >“uh… I will help you”
  623. >Jessamine wipes her eyes and stares at me again
  624. >“I will help you grow a new flower bed… and save your wheat…”
  625. >“you will?”
  626. >“…”
  627. >“…”
  628. >“…yes…”
  629. >“thank you Anon…”
  630. >she stands up
  631. >I expect her to walk up to me and hug me
  632. >instead she turns on her heels and heads to her front door
  633. >oh…
  634. >I start to walk to my land before realizing
  635. >“WAIT, JESS!”
  636. >Jessamine flinches as I scream
  637. >her tail puffing up for a few seconds
  638. >she turns around slowly
  639. >“we didn’t agree on an hour”
  640. >“evening…”
  641. >“ok… which hour of the evening?”
  642. >“three…?”
  643. >“I-”
  644. >she retreats into her house
  645. >shutting her door behind her
  646. >I sigh before turning back and heading home
  647. >“three it is then…”
  648.
  649. ~Next morning
  650.
  651. >the day was sunny
  652. >I was sitting on a rocking chair in my front porch
  653. >the chill morning breeze blew the steam off my mug of coffee
  654. >I took a sip as I was browsing my phone
  655. >I came across what I was looking for
  656. >a phone number highlighted in blue
  657. >I tapped on it, and my phone automatically dialed up
  658. >a man with a thick Scottish accent picked up
  659. >“hello, this is Jeremy Hander specialist in cattle health and care, what can I help you with?”
  660. >“ah, hello mister Jeremy, my name is Anon, I own a small ranch of beef cattle”
  661. >“what seems to be the problem sir?”
  662. >“you see… yesterday I noticed one of my cows had a lame foot and-
  663. >“I’m sorry sir but I won’t be able to attend the animal soon, we are booked for two day you see?”
  664. >“yeah that’s okay, I can wait two days”
  665. >“right, in the mean time I would recommend keeping an eye on the co-
  666. >the man’s voice faded into unintelligible background noise as my attention switched focus towards Jessamine’s house
  667. >I grabbed a pair of binoculars that laid on the windowsill behind me and took a closer look
  668. >Jessamine’s shadow behind the curtains was moving from one side of the window to the other
  669. >and then back
  670. >and then forth
  671. >she was pacing aimlessly around her house
  672. >eventually the shadow stopped on the window
  673. >and I saw Jessamine peak out from the curtains
  674. >she had a scared look on her face
  675. >“sir? sir? are you there?”
  676. >“ah! yes wait two days and take care of the cow”
  677. >“ok… send me an email with the details and I’ll get back to you soon”
  678. >“alright, thanks have a good day”
  679. >“good day to you si-
  680. >I hang up, lean back on my chair and sigh as my spine pops
  681. >the chair starts to rock slightly
  682. >I notice some gray clouds in the distance
  683. >they are heading towards the city
  684. >as if on cue, the breeze began to pick up as well
  685. >the trees shook, and loose leaves flew by
  686. >oh fuck
  687. >I don't have an umbrella
