- Sitting right in front of me, Brandy shook her head. I could see she was not thrilled with my act.
- “You’re putting EVERYONE to sleep!” Slappy shouted. “Let’s all take a nap!”
- Both of his hands shot straight up. “Nap time, kids! You’re feeling sleepy. Your eyelids are getting heavy. You can’t keep your eyes open any longer. You are falling asleep … asleep … asleep.”
- I suddenly felt drowsy. I wanted to toss Slappy off my lap and put an end to whatever was going on. But instead, I opened my mouth in a long yawn. My arms felt heavy. My head drooped.
- “… Asleep … You are all going to sleep. Good night, everyone. Enjoy your nap …”
- I struggled to stay awake. But I was fading …
- “Nap time, everyone. See you in your dreams!”
- Kids yawned. I saw Brandy stretch out on the floor and close her eyes.
- Everyone was sinking to the floor, sprawling on their sides, their backs.
- Willow tucked herself into a ball and fell asleep.
- That was the last thing I saw before I fell asleep, too. A heavy silence hung over the huge rec room. No one moved. Slumped on the stool, my arms dangled to the floor as I sank into a deep sleep.
- How long was I out?
- I have no idea. It could have been minutes. It could have been hours.
- But the next thing I knew, someone had my shoulder and was waking me up. I opened my eyes. Slappy stood in front of me, shaking me with his wooden hand.
- “Wake up, Richard. We have work to do.”
- ...
- “Richard! Richard! Richard!”
- I felt a hand shaking me by the shoulder.
- I blinked open my eyes and saw Brandy’s mom leaning over me, eyes wide with alarm. “Richard—wake up! You fell asleep sitting on the stool.”
- She gazed around. “Why did everyone go to sleep?”
- The room tilted and spun in front of me. I struggled to my feet.
- What is happening? Was I dreaming again?
- All over the floor, Brandy’s party guests were waking up, groaning and yawning. Kids sat up slowly, shaking their heads in confusion.
- I turned toward the pile of birthday gifts. They were all neatly wrapped, stacked as they had been before I faded out.
- I let out a long breath. “Wheww.”
- A nightmare. Ripping apart the presents had been a nightmare.
- But I hadn’t dreamed about the kids falling asleep. That was real. I stood and watched them all sitting up, blinking and rubbing their eyes, shaking their heads, totally confused.
- ...
- I spotted the dummy on the floor next to the stool. He was sitting straight up, his legs spread. And the cake … The birthday cake was smashed to bits—in his lap.
- Big chunks of cake all around where he sat. And an oozing heap of cake and icing piled in his lap.
- “How did this HAPPEN?” Mrs. Linker’s voice rang off the low ceiling.
- “Can anyone explain to me? What HAPPENED here?”
- “I had a terrible nightmare,” Brandy said, striding up to her mom.
- “So did I!” Lisi Franklin cried.
- “So did I!” a bunch of other kids chimed in.
- “I had this horrible dream about Richard’s dummy!” Brandy told her mom.
- “So did I! So did I!” The voices rang off the wall.
