  1. With the recent reveal of the Expansion Pass for Breath of the Wild I once again see the back and forth between whether or not it's a good thing or not. People take their hard line stances and make fun of others for their opinions or how it's presented or whatever else. Here's my opinion on the matter.
  2.
  3. Season passes more often than not are not worth the asking price and that's why I don't buy them. I like many others bought their first season pass with Borderlands 2. It's one of the first season passes I remember seeing and at first it sounded like a great idea. Get all of the DLC in a bundle and get a discount. Great!...
  4.
  5. Then reality set in months later.
  6.
  7. Not all of the DLC was of the quality I was expecting. Then we come to find out that the season pass didn't cover all of the DLC in the game. On top of all of that, by the time the third DLC came out I had lost interest in the game. In retrospect, had I bought the only DLC I would have enjoyed separately I would have saved a decent chunk of change. I wasn't feeling very good about all of this by the end of it. Borderlands 2 is the reason why I won't buy season passes ever again. Granted, some of my experience could be attributed to Gearbox's shitty business practices but it doesn't remove the inherent problems with season passes:
  8.
  9. 1. Generally all of the DLC must be good for you to get your money's worth. With a typical season pass if one DLC ends up being poor then you at best broke even and lost money at worst.
  10.
  11. 2. You might lose interest in the game by the time the DLC comes out. This was my experience with Borderlands 2 and I know several others who have expressed similar situations.
  12.
  13. 3. Pre-ordering digital goods is typically a bad idea. There's no guarantee on the quality of the game/DLC, even for franchises you love. Unless there's a huge discount for pre-ordering I don't see much of a reason for it, and even then it's still a risk. Physical goods are a different story.
  14.
  15. I will concede Nintendo's track record with DLC is mostly good, but I still don't see that as a reason to throw down money now for DLC that doesn't exist yet. On top of that, I'm not a fan of the day 1 DLC either in the pass. I'm about to spend $360+ on a Switch and Zelda and now they want more money for DLC that doesn't exist yet, cosmetic items and chests. I'll pass on the expansion pass.
