- Kingdoms:
- Nation A
- Populated by both elves and humans. Currently dealing with a bit of an overpopulation issue due to many humans fleeing the war between Nation B and Nation C. The conflict has strained the relationship between the three kingdoms and there are some rumbling of unrest by some of the elven population.
- Governed by a council of elders. There are seven on the board, with five elves and two humans present. With the human population, some want to change this dynamic from 5:2 to 4:3, which is something many elves do not want to happen.
- Official religion is polytheistic, as the elves worship many different gods and goddesses. There are religious temples all over the continent that were built in reverence of each, and religious elves will take a pilgrimage to visit them all during their lifetime. There is a special event referred to as the “New Dawn”, where the elves visit each temple with the sacred water from the elven springs and perform a ceremony there to cleanse the land. Pilgrimages have been on the decline due to the war and the last “New Dawn” ceremony is over 20 years overdue. Some believe this is why the monsters have gotten more aggressive in recent times and why Nation B is suffering from the famine. The reason for no more “New Dawn” ceremonies is not known to the public, but many believe it has to do with a lack of a “Saint” to perform the rite.
- There are 7 temples and 7 gods (corresponding with the 7 elders): Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian
- Given that many humans who fled conflict were part of either Nation B or Nation C, both religious needs are allowed within Nation A. However, religious persecution and intimidation is punished harshly, something that former residents of Nation C are often guilty of.
- Militarily, the elves have a standing military, but purely use it defensively. They have no interest in conquest, only to maintain their territory and borders. They also refuse to get involved within the war to the south between Nation B and Nation C.
- Nation B:
- Populated by mostly humans with a small elven population. Dark elves also populate the region.
- Ruled by the emperor. He has advisors, but ultimately he makes the final decision. Some consider the emperor a tyrant, while supporters see him as a savior working to rescue their nation
- There is no official religion, and religious practices are looked down upon. The people of Kingdom B believe in their own efforts more than the effects of so-called gods. As such, there are no churches in plain view.
- Nation B sports the most aggressive military and has used it for conquest in the past, which has somewhat soured the relationship with Nation C and Nation D, both of which used to be territories owned by Nation B. Nation D fought for their independence from Nation B, while Nation C split apart from Nation B. During this revolution, Nation C helped advocate for Nation D’s independence and joined their efforts.
- Nation B is suffering from a severe famine and food shortage. For the last 20 years, the land seems to have dried up and agriculture has grinded to a halt. The people are starving, leading the emperor to reach out to the other nations. Nation A is entirely self-sufficient, and as such could not offer much for Nation B. Nation C is rich in food and resources, but is not willing to give in to all of Nation B’s demands, causing conflict. Nation D flat out refuses contact with Nation B, leading Nation B to not even bother asking them for help.
- Nation B endured such a famine in the past, and as such many of their scholars are trying to determine the cause and how their ancestors solved the problem. Their efforts so far have been fruitless, which led Nation B to attack Nation C in an effort to take what they needed by force. However, it was Nation C that officially declared war on Nation B for the murder of Nation C’s princess. Nation B denies involvement with her slaying, but was more than willing to wage war in the efforts to help their people and potentially reclaim territory that was their ancestor’s.
- Nation C:
- Populated almost entirely by humans. There are very few elves, given the religious viewpoints of Nation C.
- Considered a holy empire, Nation C is ruled by the Patriarch, who speaks to the Holy One. The Holy One is said to be an entity that freed the people of Nation C from their oppressors in Nation B and to this day protects their holy nation. Everyone in Nation C is required to partake in the religion, as it is a mandate. Those who refuse are cast out of the public eye and live underground in the slums. Many of these people are accused of being demon worshippers and supporters of the Demon King.
- Despite being ruled by the Patriarch, there is a royal family, as the patriarch forgoes earthly desires and does not marry nor have children. The royal family operates as the general ruling class, while the church governs the royals themselves. The royal family are descendants from the original holy empire that existed prior to Nation B’s conquest of Nation C.
- The military of nation C see themselves as the blade and shield of the Holy One, and thus do not participate in conflict unless deemed necessary by the Patriarch.
- Despite their past, Nation C was willing to work with Nation B and help their suffering population, but they were unwilling to give in to every demand Nation B made, especially given their history and the fact that Nation C wanted something in return for helping Nation B.
- Nation C ended up declaring war on Nation B after multiple skirmishes and eventually, the slaying of the princess of the royal family. Nation B denies involvement with her slaying, but no one believes their claims, as it was revealed they had previously attempted to kidnap the princess to try and ransom Nation C to force them to give in to their demands and did not rule out trying again.
- Some believe that Nation A is next on Nation C’s radar when it comes to military action, but these are just rumors.
- Nation D:
- Populated by both beastfolk and humans, with a small elven population.
- Formerly ruled by Nation B, Nation D instead is ruled by a council not too dissimilar to Nation A. However, the race of the people on the council doesn’t matter.
- Due to Nation C’s influence, much of Nation D follows the Holy One. They are not zealots though, unlike Nation C, and do not punish those who do not follow the religion. They do have a very negative opinion of Nation B, and those who are from Nation B often hide their nationality to avoid persecution.
- Nation D is on an island, and as such they do not bother with a standing army, and instead leave their military affairs to Nation C. This dosn’t mean Nation D is incapable of defending themselves, as they fought Nation B for independence in the past. They focus on self-sufficiency and exports of goods to Nation C.
- Nation D does not have a high opinion of Nation A, as Nation A did not help them fight for their independence. Nation A did not get involved, but this led many to believe that Nation A either secretly was on the side of Nation B, or didn’t care either way. In reality, Nation A tries to avoid conflict with other nations and keeps to themselves.
- When Nation C declared war on Nation B, Nation D almost immediately joined the war on the side of Nation C.
