| background: zhai grew up in the city of novosibirsk for most of her childhood, knowing the place for ten years before her and her mother moved to china. growing up there as one of the few chinese citizens in her city's district, she often felt isolated at school, and it only got worse when her father left. she was often bullied for her different looks, the baby fat on her cheeks while all the other girls were skinny. despite only being eight when the bullying began, it definitely left a mark on her psyche. her father left her and her mother when she was nine. though she didn't understand what he was doing at the time, she did understand that something had been wrong between her mom and dad back then. they fought often; about how her mother kept working overtime and not having enough time for him, about how he couldn't handle the stress from work and the stress of having a daughter at such a young age (nine-year-old her didn't understand how twenty-eight could be young) at the same time. so he left. and the devastation that was her mother that he left behind was enough to make zhai completely and utterly hate men. even though her mother tried to tell her that it was okay, zhai had always been one to hold grudges, and this one was something she could never forgive. her parents were the epitome of love in her eyes, and when it all turned out to be a mirage, her trust issues formed. that, combined with the heaviness of the bullying when people found out at school, there wasn't much love left for her, except for the love her mother gave her. a year after her father left, her mom decided that they needed a fresh start. she had noticed that even zhai needed it, despite the ten-year-old's assurances that school is going fine and that it was okay that her mother was still working overtime. it was a surprise to zhai when her mother suddenly presented the tickets to her during dinner, but she was happy, nonetheless. she'd always wanted to know what china was like-- her mother's home country and what she wanted to consider hers as well. the adjustment was a bit easier for her, since her both her mother and father raised her with their native language and their native traditions. sometime around when she was twelve, her mother brought a man home. a man who held her mom's hand like her father did, but smiled a little bit wider when his eyes met hers. zhang han, he said his name was, of z conglomerate, the group that owned the hospital that her mother had worked for. "your mother is an amazing woman," he had told her, with a smile bright as day as he looked at her mother. back then, she still had no trust for men, even if the signs in front of her told zhai that zhang han had good intentions.. her father left too much of a mark in her head. a month later zhang han brought a boy with him-- someone who looked around her age range but perhaps a bit older-- who introduced himself as zhang yixing (zhang. yi. shing, he pronounced). she was hesitant to shake his hand back then, wondering what the heck was going on and why the heck she was meeting some overly-weird dude that kept trying to make her dance ballet for him, but she didn't like it. a year later, when her mom married zhang han, and zhang yixing was officially her stepbrother.  it took a while for her to warm up to the two new males in her life, but soon she found herself becoming closer to her brother. though she still had some trust issues with her dad (which she felt quite bad about, but couldn't help), she was accepting of him as well.

| personality: you never really assume much about zhai's character. sure, she looks lowkey intimidating and like she could kill you, but for the most part you wouldn't even suspect her for anything. much like lauren from how to get away with murder. a selective mute, zhai tends to use actions a lot more than words when expressing herself. not that you'd like to hear what she's thinking, anyway, considering that she's quite the judgemental person. it's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for, since they're the ones that always seem to know the most. you never seem to know that zhai is in the room unless you look right at her because despite her good looks, she's known how to make herself unnoticeable. the only people she'll actively talk to is her mother, and the little children she would tutor for piano practice in her spare time. if anyone else gets to hear her voice, they are either a) incredibly special to her and she trusts them, or b) so fucking irritating that she has to say something rude to get them away from her. growing up with nothing else to do considering no one really gave a shit about socializing with her, baozhai had gotten into the habit of being incredibly hyperaware of what was going on around her. she'll notice the tiniest hair on somebody's jacket and know that they own a cat, or hear footsteps from all the way down the hall and prepare herself for whoever was coming. she's quite awkward in that sense, as well. being hyperaware of her surroundings meant that she was extremely, extremely sensitive to someone being close to her. zhai tends to shy away from other people, and really doesn't know how to continue conversations. if she's ever forced to interact with people, her replies are short and straight to the point (on her notepad, of course). not that whatever she says would hold that much meaning anyway. if you aren't her mother, there's a 90% chance that whatever she just told you is a lie. it's hard to get her to open up and warm up to you (like, extremely hard), to have her show that she has any other emotion other than indifference and happiness. it sounds like a cliche sob story, but she really just doesn't like being seen as if she has any sort of weaknesses, be it emotionally or physically. if zhai is anything, though, she is p-e-double t-y. even for the tiniest things, zhai tends to hold grudges for the longest time. and, usually, she'll do something about it, whether it's giving you the cold shoulder or something much more drastic. it depends, really, on what you do, but no matter what it is-- if it slanders her or her family or anything else that she loves-- expect retribution. so beware, especially when her moody self begins to show itself. she tends to go from good to bad mood from time to time, but fret not, it's not 24/7.. more like 20/6.

| how did they join r.o.y.a.l.s: she overheard her brother being secretive with his friends (perk of being a selective mute is people not knowing about your presence in the room unless they see you), and when they left she decided to follow them. of course, when she gets caught, the r.o.y.a.l.s can't exactly have themselves be ratted out, so they gave her a choice. the administrators were quite impressed by the fact that her brother and his friends hadn't noticed her following them.

| why did they join: her brother is someone she would always connect with, and if it helped her brother then she would do anything. besides, there wasn't anything interesting in her life other than the children she taught piano every once in a while.

| weaknesses:
  + her mother ㅡ basically the only person she'd hesitate for, and the only person she would trust with her life. her rock and the only reason she doesn't hate her father (anything/anyone that makes her mother happy is okay in her book).
  + her brother ㅡ the only male she's actually close to, and has spent pretty much her entire life with. not really someone she'd trust with her life but they're getting there, and he's quite the calming presence for her.
  + her father ㅡ though it could be a strength if you keep using his existence against her (she can get quite angry at the mention of his name), she's still a bit sensitive to the topic of how her father didn't really want her. she'll freeze up, will have war flashbacks of when she was younger for a few seconds, but it's easy for her to compose herself again.
  + strength ㅡ if it isn't quite obvious considering her weight and height, zhai doesn't have much muscle. other than her thighs of steel that came from ballet and the flips she can do from gymnastics, hand-to-hand combat is not zhai's forte. the worst she can do is probably kick you in the face with an aerial flip, but she's much better at escaping and evading rather than attacking

  + beginning : first of all, he's annoying (in a sort-of endearing kind of way but also not). second of all, she really did not need another guy in her life (all she needed was her brother, her dad, list end). so she's her usual quiet self, though she made sure to not be so cold that the guy would go babbling that she's some kind of stuck up bitch and get her in trouble with her father (she can't ruin potential connections, after all). she replies when she has to, though most of the answers are either incredibly vague or just complete lies. she feels incredibly awkward around him, especially when he tries his stupid ass pick-up lines on her.

  + middle : at this point, she's just adjusted herself to his almost-constant presence. zhai still finds him as a pain in the ass, and whenever he does his little pranks she becomes incredibly frustrated and will ignore him until she finds some way to get back at him. when she does get back at him, though, she finds that she can't stay too mad after that since he's quick to back off. it's.. okay. he still tries to peck at her walls, trying to force her to open up to him. there are times when she will confess a thing or two, but most of the time she either lies or ignores his question as if he had never talked. she still hates his pick up lines. she swears she will a l w a y s hate his pick-up lines.

  + end : though she doesn't trust him like she trusts her brother, she does know that she can rely on him if she ever needed backup during a fight or something, and she really appreciates how respectful he is now of her privacy, now. zhai is also grateful for how refreshing he can be on a bad day, or during an incredibly stressful mission. she finds herself able to talk a full sentence to him if she ever chooses to speak, even though she still doesn't like talking much. she does start seeing him as more of a guardian-like person (that likes to be a pain in her ass 23/7). she opens up to him more now, though it's still not as much as she would open up to yixing or her mother, but zhai acknowledges the fact that he's someone that'll understand her, and will be serious if she needs him to be.

| how they act around your character:
  + beginning : he basically acts as if he's some kind of korean casanova, with his horrible pick up lines (he's aware they're horrible, actually, just doesn't care) and cocky smirks. any chance he gets, he talks to her, trying to get her to open up and talk to him. it pretty much never works, though, and he finds himself the victim of her vague notepad answers-- which, he's not gonna lie, makes him lowkey frustrated. so sometimes they bicker, with her switching over to using her phone app that talks for her (which is hard to not laugh at, but he holds it in out of politeness). it doesn't take long for him to cool down though (his father always taught him to be nice).

  + middle : he finds himself drawn to her even more, especially as she begins to be a lot more playful around him than she used to be when they first met. though he still uses the horrible, horrible pick-up lines on her, he notices that she smiles a bit as she goes to hit him, so he won't complain. he finds it endearing when he finds out that she teaches kids in her spare time, and the warmth in his heart when she even bothers to pay him attention... he knows it's dangerous. but he ignores it, continues going on his merry way being the bright jokester that has her too frustrated to function (even if it does have her mad at him at the end of the day). the occasional prank that he pulls on her makes them have fights from time to time, but she'll always get him back, and soon they're on even ground. honestly, they're like a rollercoaster.

  + end : when she finally opens up to him-- about her mother, the reason why she doesn't like to talk, her emotions in general-- he softens a lot more and realizes that she's human. he realized he liked her ages ago, but this opened his eyes a lot more to how she is. to who the hell zhang (originally zhou) baozhai is. he's a lot calmer around her, now, but still his bright self. he tries a lot to make sure she doesn't feel pressured to open up now (more than he used to, anyway), and takes care of her as if she was something more precious than a pearl. it's quite conflicting, though, when he's sure that the depth of her feelings don't match up with his.

| relationship: lowkey mutual dislike (but he's more cool with her than she is with him, it's just that sometimes he gets frustrated but cools down quickly) > friends.. ish with unrequited feelings
