Homestuck Class Guide: Mages

Mage: One who Understand with (Aspect) or Understands (Aspect)

Mages will suffer from their Aspect or from the effects of their Aspect. This gives them a deeply intuitive and personal understanding of their Aspect. Their challenge is to overcome their Aspect and come out on top.

Good Example: Sollux Captor, Mage of Doom

DOOM: Decay, Machines, Robots, Fire, Skulls, Entropy, Limits, Restrictions, Acceptance, Follow Rules, Sacrifice Self, Cautious, Repulsion, Pessimism, Necessity, Decrease, Inactivity, Obligations

Sollux is the Good example of a Mage because for all the suffering he endured from his Aspect of Doom, he never stopped trying, he never gave up and he never really let it get to him. He never doubted his abilities or intelligence, not once. He never faltered in who he really was and was able to rise up from his troubles and still was able to use his powers to his own advantage. His worldview is basically, okay I get it, my life sucks, I suck, everyone sucks and I’m the most pessimistic asshole in the world, but don’t you dare think that means I’m any lesser than you. I could solve a rubick’s cube with my horns. Even the last time we saw him with Nepeta and Feferi he was like, I’m too good for all y’all bitches, Sollux out, let’s go ladies.

Failed Example: Meulin Leijon, Mage of Heart

HEART: Emotions, Souls, Hats, Kisses, Desires, Irrational Impulse, Animal Instinct, Mercy, Caring, Arbitrary, Personal, Empathetic, Emotional, Passionate, Open, Honesty, Random, Inner Self

Meulin is the Failed example of a Mage. She suffers from Heart, so she suffers from people’s emotions, raw instinct, desires, impulses and passions. This gave her an innate understanding of the inner souls of all her friends, allowing her to accurately play matchmaker and ship, but for all her talent at understanding Heart, she wasn’t so great at understanding her own. It’s implied despite her matchmaking talents, her own quadrants were always a total mess, her only real loving matespritship was with Kurloz and, well, you know that how that ended. She still suffers from Kurloz’s impulses, passions and desires because of his chucklevoodoos. I believe she had the potential to be an okay Mage, but she ultimately failed partly because of her inability to learn from her own mistakes and partly from Kurloz’s chucklevoodoo influence.

Mages are people who have been dealt a horrible lot in life but their success as a Mage seems to depend on how they react to their lot in life. It goes to show, just because you recognize that your life is pretty horrible and maybe unchangeable, doesn’t mean you can’t still be okay and be good at other things and not have talents and strengths, this is where Sollux succeeded. He recognized his weaknesses, and in turn, learned his strengths. It also shows that just because you can convince yourself that it’s actually fine, it’s okay, there’s nothing wrong, doesn’t mean that’s actually true and that you don’t need to try and fix anything or even get help, this is where Meulin failed. I think Meulin maybe had a bad habit of staying in abusive relationships because she convinced herself they were fine and nothing was wrong or she could make them work. Even now, I think she still has a flushcrush on Kurloz, and she’s still suffering from that Heart.

Mages, being the Active Know class, would Invert to Heirs, the Passive Manipulate class.

For example: A Mage of Mind would invert to an Heir of Heart or a Mage of Void would invert to an Heir of Light.
