  1. Luigi's Mansion All Doors Unlocked (ADU) Info
  2.
  3. Q: What is All Doors Unlocked (ADU)?
  4.
  5. A: In ADU, we load Luigi's Mansion with a cheat code that lets you open up every door in the Mansion and ignore the Spike Seals on the doors giving us immediate access to most of the mansion.
  6.
  7. Q: Can you immediately fight King Boo and finish the game?
  8.
  9. A: No, and there is, in fact, many different forms of anti-sequence-breaking measures that were put into the game to prevent you from beating the game immediately if you were able to get to other parts of the mansion early.
  10.
  11. Q: Such as?
  12.
  13. A: See the following:
  14. - Access to 3F Balcony (Boolossus) requires 20 boos
  15. - Access to Secret Altar (King Boo) requires 40 boos
  16. - Lydia does not appear unless you've caught Neville
  17. - Chauncey does not appear unless you've caught Lydia
  18. - The Twins do not appear unless you've caught Chauncey
  19. - The doors on fire (Boneyard, Tea Room) still require you to douse them before entering their rooms
  20. - Clearing rooms often have ghosts that require you to grab elemental medals before you can clear them
  21. - The Water Medal requires having the Fire Medal first (Kitchen has a "Flash" (Ice Elemental) ghost)
  22. - The Ice Medal requires having the Water Medal first (Tea Room's door is on fire)
  23. - Boos are programmed to instantly despawn when you find them if the game is not set to the correct Area.
  24. - For example, Boos on the first floor will despawn if the game is set to Area 1 ("Up to Area 1" on the file select screen)
  25.
  26. Q: What is the reason to play ADU?
  27.
  28. A: The ADU speedrun is faster-paced than a usual LM speedrun, shorter, and does some fairly unique routing you wouldn't normally see in a typical LM speedrun. It's a surprisingly fun way to shake up LM a bit from the usual grind of runs.
  29.
  30. Q: How different is the route to ADU?
  31.
  32. A: See the following:
  33. - Keys are strictly unnecessary unless you're collecting area keys (which changes the Area game-state
  34. - Boo Release is done right at the start so back-tracking rooms for boo-catches are minimized
  35. - Room order is structured to minimize back-tracking and traveling (the basement is always saved until the very end)
  36. - Early Bogmire access lets you immediately set the game state to area 3 so you can boo-rush to 20/40 boos, though this turns out to be only useful in No OoB ADU (which is mainly a boo rush).
  37.
  38. Q: What are some unique oddities when exploring with ADU?
  39.
  40. A: Here are some things we've observed that were pretty interesting
  41. - Shivers (the butler) is triggered to appear when the game state is set to Area 2 and when you first release the boos. If you set the game state to anything further than Area 2 (collecting Bogmire Key or Boolossus Key) you've permanently despawned Shivers and he can no longer be caught on that file
  42. - In Vanilla LM, there's a weird glitch that occurs when you talk to Toad in the 1F Washroom and turn on the lights and you haven't yet done so for the Foyer. When you walk close to the Foyer (or mirror warp in), the lights will automatically turn on (and play the jingle while you're close). It turns out, there's also another room that triggers and auto-clear when another room is cleared. If you catch Sue Pea, then the 2F Bathroom will also be auto-cleared. None of us have any clue why this occurs, as these two ghosts are not connected to each other in any way. This auto-clear also turns out to prevent you from ever catching Miss Petunia (it doesn't count unless you've actually caught her).
  43. - The Sitting Room/Guest Bedroom have a really strange boo-spawning property. They can be spawned in Area 3 and be caught in the rooms they spawn in (and the other room if they move into that room). However, if they escape into the Hallway, they will instantly despawn, unless the game has been set to Area 4. These are, as far as I'm aware, the only boos that do this, and unlike other boos that despawn, they permanently disappear until you quit and return to the mansion, whereas the other boos will just re-hide in the room.
  44. - Beating a boss ghost early and defeating a previous area's boss will respawn you into the room of the "highest level" boss. This can be done in vanilla by going OoB and accessing Courtyard early, which lets you beat Boolossus early (there are exactly 20 boos available in the Area 2 state if you have access to every room). Beating Bogmire will respawn you into the 3F Balcony.
  45. - The door to the Observatory from the Astral Hall has a weird trigger that makes Luigi re-enter the Astral Hall, and this event triggers until you've activated the ghosts and cleared the Astral Hall. It turns out that this even is disabled not by clearing the room, but lighting the candles, which means in ADU, you can trigger the ghosts then immediately enter the Observatory without clearing the room (Vanilla normally seals the door when you trigger this event). The candle event can only be triggered once, so if you reset the room entirely by exiting two rooms away, the ghosts will no longer spawn and you've locked the room from being cleared permanently on the file. You can still access the Observatory, however.
  46. - Outside of the Area 1 Portrait Ghosts + Twins (where they won't spawn at all and the room will be empty unless you've caught the previous one), there are no other Portrait Ghosts that behave like this, and every other room has normal behavior no matter when you access them (so as long as you can avoid the 40-boo-gate trigger, you can enter King Boo's arena since the trigger is there in Area 1). This, however, if thrown out the window when you trigger the Blackout, which changes the behavior in every room in the mansion. Accessing Area 4 rooms during the Blackout leads to some interesting behavior.
  47. - Most Area 4 rooms in the Blackout are entirely empty, and will not spawn ghosts or Portrait Ghosts. The exception to this is Sitting Room and the Guest Bedroom, both of which have programmed Blackout Ghost layouts which go unused in normal play. You can access these rooms in Vanilla, however, via clipping into the Sealed Room early and getting the Key.
  48. - Portrait Ghost rooms do not behave consistently. Rooms like Weston's room, Van Gore's room, and the Clockwork room, are entirely empty. However, if you enter Jarvis' room, and enter the spot where he normally spawns and talks to you, the game crashes. If you enter the secret altar and walk to the King Boo cutscene trigger, the game will also crash here. However, if you hit the 40-boo-gate trigger without 40 boos, the cutscene where King Boo warps you to the Foyer will behave normally.
  49. - The Pipe Room cutscene when you normally close the pipe to access the key will also behave normally during the blackout, with no ghosts spawning in the room.
  50.
  51. Some of the above has use in certain ADU categories that would not be normally seen in Vanilla LM, while some are simply cool programming "quirks" that can't normally be seen.
