  1. >Sonata pounded at Adagio's door
  2. >"Sonata, you're only a few days into your grounding. Stop being a pest or it's gonna be a lot longer!"
  3. "ADAGIO, I NEED HELP, FOR REALZIES!"
  4. >Adagio opened her door, her face a stony glare
  5. >"What. Is. It."
  6. "I'M DYING."
  7. >"No, you're not."
  8. >The door slammed shut
  9. "ADAGIO! ADAGIO!"
  10. >"Sonata..."
  11. >Sonata pushed her way into Adagio's room in a frantic huff
  12. "I'm bleeding from here and it's not stopping," she says, circling her crotch with a finger
  13. >"Stop being ridiculous. There's no way that's true."
  14. "I'll show you!"
  15. >"No, Sonata, don't sh- OH MY GOD SONATA YOU'RE DYING!"
  16. >Adagio scooped Sonata up into her arms and ran out into the kitchen
  17. >"Aria, get the keys!"
  18. >"What are you two morons doing now?"
  19. >"SONATA'S GOING TO BLEED OUT IF YOU DON'T GET THE KEYS, GET THE KEYS."
  20. >Aria swiped the keys and the three made a break for the car
  21. >"It's all going to be okay Sonata. We'll get to the hospital in time!"
  22.
  23. >After speeding through the city, the trio pushes their way into the ER
  24. >Adagio rushes up to a nurse at a desk
  25. >"How may I help you?"
  26. >"My friend is bleeding out and we need a doctor!"
  27. >Adagio points to Sonata, who is being carried by Aria at this point
  28. >"We have someone in need of immediate medical attention in the ER," the nurse says into a phone
  29. >She speeds around the counter to help Sonata, placing her on a gurney
  30. >"Where are you bleeding from?" the nurse asked as she rushed down the hospital halls
  31. "I'm bleeding from the vagina."
  32. >Sonata gives the nurse a sparkling smile
  33. >"You're what."
  34. "Yup. Am I going to die?"
  35. >"Are you... Are you talking about a period? You came to the ER over a period?"
  36. "I don't know. I don't think punctuation is what did this to me, but you're the doctor."
  37. >"I. What. Just, you're going to be fine. You're just having a period."
  38. >The nurse shook her head as she brought Sonata back to the lobby
  39. "Do I need to put it at the end of a sentence, or what?"
  40.
  41. >Adagio ran up to Sonata as she was wheeled in
  42. >"Are you okay? Did they say you'll be okay."
  43. "I'm still bleeding."
  44. >"Look," the nurse said, "she's fine. She's, I mean, by god, she's just having her period. You girls should know what that is by your age. Is this your idea of a prank, wasting our time?"
  45. >Adagio pointed her finger into the nurse's chest
  46. >"I'll have you know, insolent mortal, we are eons old beings from realms beyond this petty universe! We have lived thousands of years! Of course we would know of this 'period', were it real! Do your job and practice your human medicine on her!"
  47. >The nurse pushed Adagio's hand away
  48. >"Right. I think you all should just leave."
  49. >"No! You must find out what's wrong with her, run all those tests and whatever it is you people of medicine do."
  50. >Aria slid herself next to Adagio, phone in her hand
  51. >On it was a wikipedia page on menstruation
  52. >"Adagio, I think the nurse is telling the truth. It's some weird human thing."
  53. >"SILENCE. SONATA IS GOING TO SEE A DOCTOR, AND THAT'S THAT. I REFUSE TO BE MADE A FOOL OF."
  54. >Aria shrugged
  55. >"Fine, I'll send her in. Just go sit down."
  56. >The nurse muttered something under her breath
  57. >A man came to bring Sonata to her room, still laying on the gurney
  58. "Wee~"
  59.
  60. >Half an hour passed
  61. >Adagio went up to the lobby desk
  62. >"When will she be done here?"
  63. >"They're doing routine testing. She should be done soon, and then you can leave. Honestly, I'm surprised she's not out yet, seeing as there's nothing wrong with her."
  64. >The nurse's voice was as biting as her glare
  65. >Her eyes turned back to her paperwork
  66. >Adagio stuck her tongue out at the impudent human before returning to her seat
  67. >"I don't see why you're making a big fuss out of this."
  68. >"Well have YOU ever gotten this so-called 'period', Aria."
  69. >"No, but-"
  70. >"Well there you go, then! Bleeding from the genitals, normal? I cannot imagine humanity being such strange beasts."
  71. >Aria just shrugged
  72. >Another half hour passed
  73. >A man came out from the area of the hospital proper
  74. >"Are you two with the blue one, Sonata?"
  75. >Adagio and Aria nodded
  76. >"Something came up after we ran our preliminary tests. It might be nothing, but we still have to follow protocol here. It could take a few hours, so if you just leave your number with the nurse here we can call you when she's done."
  77.
  78. >A few hours passed as Adagio and Aria waited in a nearby diner
  79. >Aria groaned
  80. >"Our whole day's shot now because of Sonata," she said, poking at her food with a fork
  81. >"Hush. It might be something serious."
  82. >Aria rolled her eyes
  83. >"Because we all know Sonata is so prone to serious stuff. They're probably just keeping her there to make our days suck and get paid more. Ugh, this is the worst."
  84. >"Aria."
  85. >Aria groaned and rested her head on the table, boredom plastered across her face
  86. >It was silly to worry, Adagio knew
  87. >It was just that they weren't immortal anymore
  88. >Getting sick, getting hurt, all of it just seemed terrifying now
  89. >BEEP BEEP
  90. >"Hello?"
  91. >"Yes."
  92. >"Okay."
  93. >"Okay."
  94. >"We'll be there."
  95. >Adagio and Aria began driving back to the hospital
  96. >"Well, Adagio? It's nothing, right? I know I'm right."
  97. >Adagio was silent the whole way there
  98. >It was very unlike her
  99.
  100. >"Please tell me it's nothing too bad," Adagio pleaded
  101. >Aria's eyes darted back and forth between Adagio and Aria
  102. >Her tough demeanor fell apart as the severity of the situation was made aware to her
  103. >"I'm sorry. Unfortunately, our tests found abnormal cell growth in her ovaries. It's... extremely uncommon for a girl her age to have such an advanced case."
  104. >"C-Can't you just cut it out or something?"
  105. >"It's spread to too much of her body. At this point, chemotherapy would be our best shot. She shouldn't be doing anything too extraneous, needs to be eating healthy, but I'm afraid there isn't much more that can be done."
  106. >Adagio and Aria clung to one another
  107. >"Can we just see her then?"
  108. >They followed the doctor to Sonata's room
  109. >She waved at them cheerfully from her bed
  110. "Hey Adagio! Hey Aria!"
  111. >"S-Sonata, are you okay?"
  112. "Yup! It wasn't a period, so that's good. It's something else. I don't really remember what he said. Avian something or something."
  113.
  114. >Aria hung back at the far wall as Adagio stepped to Sonata's bedside
  115. >She looked perfectly fine
  116. >She looked like she always did
  117. "You look sad. Something bad happen?"
  118. >Adagio pulled Sonata into a hug and nuzzled her head against her chest
  119. >Sonata returned the embrace, ecstatic at Adagio's seemingly random affection
  120. "Adagio... Are you crying?"
  121. >She didn't respond
  122. >Adagio's body trembled as she tried to suck it in, tried not to cry in front of Sonata
  123. >She didn't want to scare her
  124. "Aria, what's wrong with Ad-"
  125. >"SHUT UP SONATA."
  126. >Sonata jumped back in her seat
  127. >Aria's voice was quavering and hateful
  128. >"WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE SUCH AN IDIOT?! WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE THE WORST?!"
  129. "W-What did I do?"
  130. >Aria growled as tears flowed down her face
  131. >"We haven't been mortal for even a month and y-you're doing this already... It's just like you!"
  132. "Aria, I'm sorry for whatever I did, I-"
  133. >Aria stormed out of the room before Sonata could finish her sentence
  134. "A-Adagio? What's going on? What did I do? I'm so sorry if I made you two mad. I won't do it again!"
  135.
  136. >"Sonata... It's fine. I'm not mad at you. Aria's not mad at you. It's fine."
  137. >Adagio just kept repeating that over and over
  138. >It's fine
  139. >Very low, a whisper
  140. >Eventually, it was nothing but a sob
  141. "Adagio, you're scaring me."
  142. >Until the moment they had to leave, Adagio held Sonata against her
  143. >A matter of months is all she had left, if she were lucky
  144. >The chemo would be ongoing, painful
  145. >She had tried to explain what was happening to Sonata, but she didn't seem to understand
  146. >Adagio didn't really understand it either
  147. >'Oh it's okay,' she'd say
  148. >'Six months is a loooooong time. That'splent of Taco Tuesdays!'
  149. >Snowfall marked the three month mark, and Sonata seemed to be okay
  150. >Frail, without hair, but fine
  151. "Ooh, ooh, Aria! Can we make snow angels?!"
  152. >Sonata was paler now, gaunter
  153. >But her eyes still beamed the way they always had
  154. >"No."
  155. "Aw, why not?! It'll be fun!"
  156. >"Because you're an i- Because I don't want to. And because you'll just wear yourself out."
  157. >Sonata pouted
  158. "I don't like being sick."
  159.
  160. >"Yeah. It sucks."
  161. >Sonata just nodded
  162. "Can you just make one and I'll watch?"
  163. >Aria shook her head
  164. "Pleeeaaaase~"
  165. >Sonata pleaded with Aria, hopping up and down in place
  166. >"Fine. You owe me for this."
  167. "Yeah!"
  168. >Aria laid down in the snow, motionless
  169. >She watched as her breath wisped into the grey slate of sky
  170. >It was morning, but it certainly didn't look it
  171. >And it was cold
  172. >Winter sucked
  173. "C'mon, make one!"
  174. >Aria moved her arms and legs along the ground
  175. >She hadn't done this in a long time
  176. >She lets out a little laugh
  177. >It was kind of fun
  178. >"How's it look?"
  179. "Awesome! I wish I could be doing that."
  180. >The clouds in the sky broke apart behind Sonata
  181. >Aria could see the blue behind the grey, see the sun in the sky hovering just behind Sonata's head
  182. "You look just like an angel, Aria!"
  183.
  184. >Aria and Sonata hung up their winter gear as they entered the apartment
  185. >The smell of taco permeated the place
  186. "Ooh!"
  187. >"Sonata, wait- Ugh."
  188. >Aria followed after Sonata
  189. >Adagio was in the kitchen, and it looked like she just finished cooking
  190. >Tortillas were placed on the table, along with all sorts of taco filling
  191. >"Dig in, guys."
  192. "Tacos on Thursday?"
  193. >"Eh. I thought it might be nice."
  194. >Sonata sat down, looking over the bountiful feast with hungry eyes
  195. >"Should she really be eating this stuff?" Aria whispered to Adagio. "The doctor already said she should be cutting down on this kind of stuff, especially before... treatment..."
  196. >Sonata had in front of her an assorted variety of assembled tacos now
  197. >As much as it was food, it was also an art
  198. >For her at least
  199. >"Just let her be happy. A few extra tacos isn't going to do any harm."
  200. >"Are you the doctor? How do you know that? Don't you want her to survive this? She shouldn't be eating this garbage. Maybe one taco will be the difference."
  201. >Adagio shook her head
  202. >"Aria, she... Let's just let her be happy with the time she has left."
  203. "What are you guys talking about? Let's all sit down and eat. What's the best meal without my besties? C'mon!"
  204.
  205. >"The doctor said you shouldn't be eating this much. You have another session in just a few days."
  206. >Adagio tries to shush Aria but gets pushed aside
  207. >"Put the taco down."
  208. "W-Why? I'll be too sick to eat these next Tuesday because of the hospital stuff."
  209. >"Put it down."
  210. "Try and stop me!" Sonata said with a giggle
  211. >Aria leaps over and slaps the food onto the floor
  212. >"I TOLD YOU TO STOP!"
  213. "A-Aria..."
  214. >Sonata's voice cracked
  215. "I-I'm sorry I made you mad..." she said through gulps of air
  216. >Sonata was crying again
  217. >"M-Maybe if you weren't such an idiot, you wouldn't be in this situation, Sonata! Maybe if you just listened to the doctor, you'd get better! It's almost like you're doing this on purpose, you and Adagio!"
  218. >"Aria, please. Just stop."
  219. >Adagio put her arms around Aria only to feel an elbow slam against her chest
  220. >Aria pushed away at Adagio
  221. >"Maybe you've given up, but I haven't! Am I the only one who hasn't given up here? You're all just idiots, stupid! She'll get better if you don't keep fucking around like an i-idiot!"
  222. >Sonata tapped on Aria's back
  223. >As she turned, she saw Sonata holding up a taco
  224. "Y-You can have it... I won't eat anymore today... I'm sorry, Aria. I'm sorry for being such a bad friend."
  225. >Aria collapsed to the floor
  226. "S-Stop crying. I'm so sorry. I'll do better next time."
  227.
  228. >A lot of days went by like this now, it seemed
  229. >Time passed by so slowly, so very slowly, especially for one who's had so much of it pass by already
  230. >The last few months seemed longer than any century Adagio had ever lived through
  231. >Sonata never stopped being that silly little kid she'd found those many years ago
  232. >It seemed she was always fighting with Aria and Sonata, but she couldn't remember why anymore
  233. >Why she would ever get so angry at them
  234. >Why she would sometimes wish she never found them
  235. >The only question should could ask herself was 'Why Sonata?'
  236. >Seeing her get weaker and weaker after every trip to the hospital was killing her
  237. "Adagio?"
  238. >"Oh, huh?"
  239. "I think the soups gonna burn. If soup burns."
  240. >"Oh, yes, thank you Sonata. I was just distracted."
  241. >She finished up her cooking and brought it to the table
  242. >"Bon appetit!"
  243. "Woo..."
  244. >"I know you don't like soup, but you can't eat much else after a session."
  245. "I know..."
  246. >Sonata prodded at the broth with her spoon
  247. "Is Aria going to eat with us tonight?"
  248. >"I... I don't know, Sonata."
  249. "She never comes out of her room anymore. I tried to tell her I'm sorry-"
  250. >"It's not your fault, Sonata. Don't blame yourself."
  251. >Sonata brought her soup to her lips and meekly sipped at it
  252. "Adagio... My arm's too tired... I don't think I can eat it."
  253. >"Here, let me help you."
  254.
  255. >Sonata's arm shook as she put the spoon back in its bowl
  256. >Adagio took her seat next to Sonata
  257. >Her little Sonata gave her a warm smile as she helped her eat
  258. >Sonata was so thin now, it was almost eerie
  259. >Her brittle body was shaking oh-so constantly
  260. >Adagio's arms were trembling now, too
  261. >"O-Oh, sorry, Sonata. Let me get that."
  262. >Adagio wiped at Sonata's skirt, trying to rub out the new stain
  263. "It's okay Adagio."
  264. >Her voice was so airy now
  265. >So light
  266. >As if it could be carried away forever at any time, like a melody lost to time
  267. >"Okay, that looks good. Are you still hungry, Sonata?"
  268. >Sonata was quiet
  269. >"Sonata?"
  270. >Sonata was silent
  271. >Adagio shook her
  272. >"Sonata, stop!"
  273. >She pressed her fingers to Sonata's thin wrists
  274. >There was faint thrumming
  275. >But it was there
  276. >"ARIA, HELP ME. HOSPITAL."
  277. >Aria burst out of her room
  278. >Each got under one arm of their friend and lifted her up
  279. >"She's going to be fine, Adagio... This'll just be like the last time she did this..."
  280.
  281. >Again at the hospital they waited
  282. >Hours passed, too many
  283. >It was another heart attack, the doctor told them
  284. >Her body is failing her
  285. >She's too weak to leave the hospital
  286. >They don't know how much time she has left
  287. >She needs to be with whatever family they had, the doctor said
  288. >Aria and Adagio stepped into Sonata's room
  289. >"S-Sonata?"
  290. "Hey, besties!"
  291. >Sonata coughed as she tried to maintain a smile
  292. >Her hand hovered slightly off the bed and gave a little wave
  293. >"H-How are you?" Aria stuttered
  294. "I'm okay. I still have another month until my six months are up."
  295. >Sonata punctuated her sentence with a grin
  296. >"And you'll have another six after that."
  297. >"Aria, don't..."
  298. >"Sonata is going to be just fine. She's been fine for over a thousand years. Another six months isn't too much to ask from the idiot."
  299. >Aria's hands are balled up tightly
  300. >"She's going to be fine."
  301. >She wasn't going to cry
  302. >Aria gasped as Sonata reached out for her hand
  303. "I'm sorry for being so bad to you, Aria."
  304. >Aria gripped Sonata close to her in a bear hug and cried
  305. >Cried so hard she didn't know if she'd ever cry again
  306. >Time seemed to pass by strangely
  307. >As if months were now passing
  308. >And Sonata was still here
  309. >"I... I'm going to go now."
  310. >"What, you can't! We need to be here now."
  311. >"I'm leaving. I'll meet you and Sonata back at home."
  312. >Adagio put her hand on Aria's shoulder
  313. >"Aria..."
  314. >"I said I'll meet both of you idiots back at home, okay?!"
  315.
  316. "I... I'm not an idiot..."
  317. >Aria stopped
  318. >"I know."
  319. >I am, that's what she wanted to say
  320. >This was her fault
  321. >Because she wasn't nicer
  322. >She'd had so much time with Sonata, and almost all of it was spent picking on her
  323. >Aria shrugged and turned back around
  324. >She sat down on a chair next to Adagio, both at Sonata's side
  325. "I'm not going to be okay, am I?"
  326. >Aria and Sonata looked to each other for answers
  327. "I-I wasn't scared before, but... I'm... I'm scared now, guys. F-For realzies."
  328. >She giggled
  329. >Giggled through the tears
  330. "I love you guys."
  331. >Adagio wept
  332. >Aria wept
  333. >And they embraced
  334. >"Don't be scared, Sonata. We're here for you."
  335. "I know. I'll be brave."
  336.
  337. >Hours passed by
  338. >Hours passed by where they reminisced on old times
  339. >They talked about when they'd first met
  340. >About how lucky they all were to have each other
  341. >Talked about all those stories they had to tell
  342. >So many things that seemed to have been forgotten resurged
  343. >A millennium of jokes and adventures and lazy days
  344. "Do you think dying's scary?"
  345. >"You're not going to die," Aria said. "So what's it m-matter?"
  346. "I'm just thinking."
  347. >"You? Think?"
  348. >Aria and Sonata chuckled
  349. "Maybe I'll go back to Equestria."
  350. >"Yeah, it'll be just like old times," Adagio said
  351. >Sonata let out a sigh
  352. "Can you sing for me?"
  353. >"S-Sonata... You know we can't sing anymore..."
  354. "Please?"
  355. >Adagio and Aria both held one of Sonata's hands in their own
  356. >And they sang
  357. >Their voices were as strong and as beautiful as ever and it made Sonata happy
  358. >It was just like how it was at the beginning
  359. >Whenever she was scared, Adagio and Aria would sing to her
  360. >And it would be beautiful
  361. >And all her fear would go away
  362. >No matter how scary it was outside
  363. >And she could finally close her eyes
  364. >And sleep
  365.
