  12. *************************
  13.
  14. [slow, sleepy breathing; noises of shifting in bed and waking up]
  15.
  16. (still waking and a little confused) Sweetheart? Hey...hey, what are you doing awake?...Hmm?...Well, what time is it?...(groan)
  17.
  18. Ok, what's wrong?...(sigh with loving, teasing tone) It's the middle of the night, you're awake, and you usually sleep like the dead. Don't tell me nothing's wrong.
  19.
  20. (concerned, becoming more awake and aware something is wrong) Hey, hey sweetheart! You're covered in sweat and my god, honey, you're breathing like you just ran a race! What, what's going on?...No. Stop. You're not ok, you're NOT ok. What's wrong?
  21.
  22. Mhmm...Did you have a bad dream or?...You're just not feeling right. Ok, um, define not right. What is it?..Mhmm...Oh honey. It sounds like your anxiety again. What's bothering you? What's on your mind?...Mhmm....Ok, ok, alright, alright, hang on. Ok, first of all...
  23.
  24. [sounds of cuddling closer]
  25.
  26. C'mere, come closer to me...Ok.
  27.
  28. Hey, hey, hey look at me... (soft laugh) I know. I know you can hardly see me. We're gonna get through this, ok? Just like we did the last time and the time before that. It's gonna be fine, right?...Right. (kiss)
  29.
  30. Ok. Alright, why don't you take some deep breaths with me, ok? We'll breathe for four, we'll hold for one, and we're gonna breathe out for five. Ready?
  31.
  32. (slow, measured count out) One...two...three..four...one...five...four...three...two...one...
  33.
  34. (soft laugh) I know I didn't do it with you.
  35.
  36. That's what we're gonna do, ok?...Ready? One more time?
  37.
  38. (deep breaths for the same counts as above but without counting)
  39.
  40. Again.
  41.
  42. (deep breaths for the same counts as above but without counting)
  43.
  44. Good. C'mon keep breathing slowly sweetheart. It's ok...I know, I know. I get scared when I have anxiety attacks too, panic attacks, it doesn't matter what our logical brain knows. All you can do is react to how you feel and it's just your body overreacting, right?
  45.
  46. Everything is ok. You're safe....Yeah. I know, I know it's hard, honey. (kisses) I wish i could take it away...Mhmm. That's it. Slow your breathing down again.
  47.
  48. Do you remember when we started spending nights with each other and I had panic attacks with you for the first time? You used to remind me that all those things that were happening to me weren’t that scary. You used to tell me exactly what they were and why they were happening and what was causing them.
  49.
  50. I can do the same thing for you, you know. I know your mind is racing and it makes you feel confused. It's a little bit hard to land on something, hard to focus...Mhmm...And, your heart's probably still pounding...Mmmm I can feel it. It's just the adrenaline. That's all it is. It's a chemical reaction. Your body thinks it needs to run, but you don't, you don't need to run. You're safe...Mmmm, I know. I know it makes it hard to slow your breathing down. Just keep trying.
  51.
  52. (deep breaths)
  53.
  54. Did you think of something that set you off or was it something you just woke up with?..Yeah. Oh honey. You've been really stressed lately and, I'm not happy it's happening, but I'm not surprised it's happening. You've worked so many late nights and we really haven't been eating the best, and our weekends have been so busy, we really haven't had any downtime...Mhmm...I know, I know.
  55.
  56. (concerned and reassuring) No, oh god no. No, stop. Hey. This not silly. You are not silly. This isn't something I put up with. It's something I am here to help you with, something you're going through. It's something I want to help you deal with, just like you helped me...It's ok, it's ok...Of course I don't mind! Oh my goodness of course not!...(soft but firm) No. Ok, stop. Listen to me. Ok. This does not make you any kind of burden. I'm not angry with you. I'm not upset with you. None of those things. All want is to help you feel better.
  57.
  58. And if it, if it means that I need to be up the entire night with you, talking to you, listening to you, letting you vent, just laying here breathing with you, then thats what I'll do ok? (kiss) You're important to me. It's important that...c'mon, here, put your back to my chest.
  59.
  60. [shifting, rustle of sheets]
  61.
  62. Mmmm, ok. I'm just gonna run my fingers up and down your arm. Just focus on how that feels. Focus on my words. Feel my chest rise and fall against your back as I breathe deep, slow. Everything is gonna be ok.
  63.
  64. [sound of fingers stroking bare skin]
  65.
  66. All those thoughts, everything you're worrying about, everything that's scaring you, I know it all, it all seems so much bigger and so much scarier at night. It doesn't feel like there are solutions. It feels like the littlest things are just insurmountable, but they're not. We can get through this together. Right now the racing thoughts, your heartbeat, your breath, we're gonna take care of those things right now. And everything else can wait until tomorrow when the sun is up and everything feels right sized again, ok?
  67.
  68. (deep breathing)
  69.
  70. Are you feeling a little better?...Hmm?...Yeah, it feels like your heartbeat has slowed down a bit. It's ok honey, it's ok...Ssshhhh. It's gonna be fine. Everything will be fine. I'm here and you're safe. C'mere.
  71.
  72. [rustling sheets, cuddling even closer]
  73.
  74. Yeah....Hmm? You don't have to thank me sweetheart. It's part of taking care of you. It's how we care for each other, right?
  75.
  76. (tone gets softer, a bit more than a whisper) Yeah? You're feeling a little sleepy?...Good. Just close your eyes. I'm not going anywhere. I won't fall asleep again until you're asleep, until I know that you're ok.
  77.
  78. What?...If it happens again, then we'll do this again. Whether it's tonight or tomorrow night or every night from here on out, though I hope not because I don't want you going through that. But don't worry about that...Sssshhhh. It's ok. I just want you to relax. Fall back to sleep.
  79.
  80. (this part should be delivered slowly and softly, allowing for relaxation of muscle groups between)
  81. Relax your neck. All of these muscles right here, they're so tight...Relax...Relax.
  82. Relax your shoulders. Good.
  83. Your arms.
  84. Your back.
  85. Take a deep breath, deep breath. Good.
  86. Relax your hips.
  87. Your thighs.
  88. Your calves.
  89. Your feet and your toes.
  90. (only just above a whisper) And now, hmm, here, your hands. Unclench your hands, baby. Good, good...You're safe. You're safe with me. I'm here for you. It's ok to slip off to sleep.
  91.
  92. (deep breathing)
  93.
  94. (whisper) Good night, sweetheart.
  95.
  96. (fade out with deep breathing)
