- Owen's first use of the boost:
- He drew in a deep breath, held it, and then let it out. A slow, purposeful calm crept over him. He smiled briefly, acknowledging the irony, and then spoke the activation word boost. Blood thundered through his head and his heart raced. The buried subliminals kicked in, flooding his system with adrenaline and endorphins, and other serums from specially gengineered glands. His muscles swelled and his senses blossomed. He was stronger, faster, more efficient in every way. His thoughts were sharp and lightning fast. For as long as the boost lasted, he would be more than human; more than merely human. He couldn’t maintain it for a long, or it would burn him out. But he could stand it long enough to do what he had to do.
- He burst out of the tunnel entrance again, moving too quickly for the human eye to follow, raised his disrupter and shot the man holding a gun through the chest while he was still reacting to Owen’s sudden appearance. The energy beam punched right through the security man’s chest and threw him aside. The energy gun flew from his hand, out of reach of the others. Owen was upon them both before the first man hit the ground. They seemed to be moving in slow motion to him, every second an age. Their swords rose nightmarishly slowly, and then he was among them, inhumanly fast and strong, supercharged almost beyond the ability of the human frame to bear. His sword ripped through one man’s throat, half severing the head from the body, and then leapt on to plunge into the third man’s chest. And as quickly as that, it was all over. -Deathstalker
- With his boosted strength, Owen survives crashing a flyer into the ground, then bends the metal canopy with his bare hands:
- Then another energy beam hit him from behind, and all the lights on his control panels went out. The flyer dropped like a stone, the motor silent, and the ground came rushing up. The left wing hit first, spinning the flyer around. The impact slammed Owen forward against the restraining straps with brutal force, driving the air from his lungs.
- For a moment he hung there, dazed and helpless, and then the boost jerked him awake. The flyer had dug its nose into the ground, and he was hanging over the spider-webbed canopy. He hit the strap release and lashed out with his fist as he fell forward against the canopy. Part of it shattered and fell outward, but there still wasn’t enough space for him to crawl past the jagged stumps of glass thrusting out from the canopy surround. There was smoke in the cabin, and behind him he could hear the crackling of flames. He took firm hold of the edges of the canopy, breaking away some of the glass and ignoring fragments that still bit into his hands, and slowly he forced the metal rim outward. The solid steel groaned as it yielded reluctantly to his boosted strength. Blood slithered down his hands. Smoke filled the cabin, tearing at his lungs. He bent away the steel edges and finally forced his way through the jagged glass and out. -Deathstalker
- When boosted, Owen doesn't feel pain:
- He checked his hands dispassionately. They weren’t too badly damaged, and the smaller cuts were already sealing themselves. He felt no pain in his hands or anywhere else, and wouldn’t till he came out of boost. At which point his aggrieved body would have a hell of a lot more to worry about than a few cuts and bruises. The human body wasn’t meant to work at this kind of level for this long. -Deathstalker
- Owen's "yacht" (yeah...) is capable of flying into orbit in an instant:
- “There’s only one place we can go,” said Hazel. “Mistworld, the rebel planet. But it’s a one-way trip. You’ll be safe enough there, but no one ever leaves Mistworld.”
- “Mistworld. I might have known.” Hazel looked at Owen inquiringly, and he shook his head. “Don’t ask. Very well, for want of anywhere better to go, Mistworld it is. Set the coordinates, Oz. Let me know when we’re ready to make the hyper jump.”
- “Yes, Owen. We are now in orbit.”
- “What, already?” said Hazel. “I didn’t even know we’d taken off.”
- “I told you this yacht was special,” said Owen smugly. -Deathstalker
- Activating the boost wipes away mind control:
- “You’re mine, Hazel.” The Wampyr’s voice was cold and commanding. “Kneel.”
- There was a sudden power in his voice, vile and inhuman and overpowering. Everyone shuddered who heard it, and Hazel fell back involuntarily. She tried to draw her sword, but her hand was shaking too much. Several men and women in the crowd dropped to their knees, and still more fell back, leaving a wide space around the Wampyr and his chosen victim.
- This has gone far enough, thought Owen, and murmured the code word boost. Power flooded through him and burned in his muscles, wiping away the command in the Wampyr’s voice. -Deathstalker
- After making it through the Madness Maze, Owen gains superpowers. An example of these can be found here:
- And something awoke in the depths of Owen’s mind, something new, something from the hindbrain, the undermind, where the real power lay beneath the surface of everyday thoughts. Owen had been through the Maze, and he was different now. Time seemed to slow and stop, and he had all the time in the world to think about what to do. He had an advantage that Ozymandius hadn’t used yet. The boost. It would have made him faster than any of the others, but the AI hadn’t triggered it. There had to be a reason for that. The AI wouldn’t have overlooked such an obvious advantage. Which could only mean that the boost was in some way dangerous to Ozymandius’ control over him. He formed the word in his mind, putting all his strength and resolve behind it, concentrating until there was nothing left in his mind but the single word, boost, over and over, a mantra, a heartbeat, a command. And still it wasn’t enough.
- So that new part of him, that strange new force that had surged up from the undermind reached out and touched the minds of his companions. The same force blazed up in all their minds, forming a whole far greater than the sum of its parts. Owen’s mouth moved slowly but surely in the word boost, and new strength flooded through him, joining with the new thing from the Maze to supercharge his mind and body, breaking the AI’s control in a moment. He stepped back from Random and lowered his gun.
- Hazel threw herself at Ruby in one last desperate attack, but Owen reached out through their mental link and stopped her in mid-thrust. His mind, linked with the others, had become clear and lucid, shining and brilliant. Owen reached out in a new direction he could sense if not see, and suddenly he was somewhere else, and Ozymandius was there with him. It was a strange place, without identifiable shape or form, but he was the light and the AI was the dark. Owen shone like the sun, bright and piercing, and the AI’s darkness surrounded him like the endless starless night of the Darkvoid, thick and smothering. But Owen was not alone. His friends were with him, and together they were so much more than they had been. The light blazed bright and brighter, and the darkness fell back before it, growing gray, paler and paler, until it was nothing more than a thin shadow, fading away to nothing at all. And if Owen heard a last despairing cry of his name in the AI’s voice, he payed it no heed, and there was only the light, shining on and on forever.
- And then the light was gone, and the link was broken, and Owen fell back alone into his body. He awoke reluctantly, in fits and starts, to find himself lying on the floor of the Maze with Random kneeling beside him. He turned his head slowly to see Hazel lying on her back not far away, twitching and shivering, while Ruby hovered uncertainly over her. Owen sat up slowly and carefully. His body felt like his own again, but as though he’d returned to it after a long absence somewhere else. Memories of the mind link were already becoming confused and scattered, like a fading dream, and Owen was content to let that happen. It had been too big, too complex, too frightening for him to stand for long, and he chose quite deliberately to forget it.
- “What happened?” said Random. “What was that? I’ve never felt anything like it.”
- “It’s over,” said Owen. “Don’t think about it.”
- “What about the AI? Is its contact broken?”
- “Yes. Ozymandius is dead. I killed him.” -Deathstalker
