  1. TABAXI
  2. WE HAD A TABAXI COME THROUGH ONCE, A FEW WINTERS
  3. back. She kept the taproom packed each night with her stories
  4. and spent most days napping in a chair in front of the
  5. fireplace. We thought she was lazy, but when Linene came
  6. around looking for a missing broach, she was out the door
  7. before I could blink an eye.
  8. -Toblen Stonehill, innkeeper
  9. Hailing from a strange and distant land, wandering tabaxi
  10. are catlike humanoids driven by curiosity to collect
  11. interesting artifacts, gather tales and stories, and lay
  12. eyes on all the world's wonders. Ultimate travelers, the
  13. inquisitive tabaxi rarely stay in one place for long. Their
  14. innate nature pushes them to leave no secrets uncovered,
  15. no treasures or legends lost.
  16. WANDERING OUTCASTS
  17. Most tabaxi remain in their distant homeland, content
  18. to dwell in small, tight clans. These tabaxi hunt for food,
  19. craft goods, and largely keep to themselves.
  20. However, not all tabaxi are satisfied with such a life.
  21. The Cat Lord, the divine figure responsible for the creation
  22. of the tabaxi, gifts each of his children with one
  23. specific feline trait. Those tabaxi gifted with curiosity
  24. are compelled to wander far and wide. They seek out
  25. stories, artifacts, and lore. Those who survive this period
  26. of wanderlust return home in their elder years to
  27. share news of the outside world. In this manner, the
  28. tabaxi remain isolated but never ignorant of the world
  29. beyond their home.
  30. BARTERERS OF LORE
  31. Tabaxi treasure knowledge rather than material things.
  32. A chest filled with gold coins might be useful to buy food
  33. or a coil of rope, but it's not intrinsically interesting.
  34. THE CAT LORD
  35. The deity of the tabaxi is a fickle e.ntity. as befits the patron
  36. of cats. The tabaxi believe that the Cat Lord wanders the
  37. world, watching over them and intervening in their affairs
  38. as needed. Clerics of the Cat Lord are rare and typically
  39. access the Trickery domain.
  40. In the tabaxi's eyes, gathering wealth is like packing
  41. rations for a long trip. It's important to survive in the
  42. world, but not worth fussing over.
  43. Instead, tabaxi value knowledge and new experiences.
  44. Their ears perk up in a busy tavern, and they tease
  45. out stories with offers of food, drink, and coin. Tabaxi
  46. might walk away with empty purses, but they mull
  47. over the stories and rumors they collected like a miser
  48. counting coins.
  49. Although material wealth holds little attraction for the
  50. tabaxi, they have an insatiable desire to find and inspect
  51. ancient relics, magical items, and other rare objects.
  52. Aside from the power such items might confer, a tabaxi
  53. takes great joy in unraveling the stories behind their creation
  54. and the history of their use.
  55. FLEETING FANCIES
  56. Wandering tabaxi are mercurial creatures, trading one
  57. obsession or passion for the next as the whim strikes. A
  58. tabaxi's desire burns bright, but once met it disappears
  59. to be replaced with a new obsession. Objects remain intriguing
  60. only as long as they still hold secrets.
  61. A tabaxi rogue could happily spend months plotting to
  62. steal a strange gem from a noble, only to trade it for passage
  63. on a ship or a week's lodging after stealing it. The
  64. tabaxi might take extensive notes or memorize every
  65. facet of the gem before passing it on, but the gem holds
  66. no more allure once its secrets and nature have been
  67. laid bare.
  68. TINKERS AND MINSTRELS
  69. Curiosity drives most of the tabaxi found outside their
  70. homeland, but not all of them become adventurers. Tabaxi
  71. who seek a safer path to satisfy their obsessions
  72. become wandering tinkers and minstrels.
  73. These tabaxi work in small troupes, usually consisting
  74. of an elder, more experienced tabaxi who guides up to
  75. four young ones learning their way in the world. They
  76. travel in small, colorful wagons, moving from settlement
  77. to settlement. When they arrive, they set up a small
  78. stage in a public square where they sing, play instruments,
  79. tell stories, and offer exotic goods in trade for
  80. items that spark their interest. Tabaxi reluctantly accept
  81. gold, but they much prefer interesting objects or pieces
  82. of lore as payment.
  83. These wanderers keep to civilized realms, preferring
  84. to bargain instead of pursuing more dangerous methods
  85. of sating their curiosity. However, they aren't above a
  86. little discreet theft to get their claws on a particularly interesting
  87. item when an owner refuses to sell or trade it.
  88. TABAXI NAMES
  89. Each tabaxi has a single name, determined by clan and
  90. based on a complex formula that involves astrology,
  91. prophecy, clan history, and other esoteric factors. Tabaxi
  92. names can apply to both males and females, and
  93. most use nicknames derived from or inspired by their
  94. full names.
  95. Clan names are usually based on a geographical feature
  96. located in or near the clan's territory.
