"The Annex of South America"

[Description]:

Said to have been one of the worst conflicts in history, the Annex of South America started out as a simple territorial dispute between the recently formed South American Union and their neighboring super-nations, the Canadian, British, and Japanese Unions.

These three nations felt that the South American Union did not hold enough power to govern the entirety of its lands. As well, it was discovered that their government had been putting funding into the development of biological weapons after the S.A.U. was made aware of a rare toxic plant found only in the innermost recesses of the continent.

This plant, known as 'Death Lilly', possessed a toxin that could kill and break down almost any living organism in a matter of seconds once refined, and could be easily spread yet also easily dispersed and rendered inert. Such a resource would become the next atomic bomb of the era, a weapon capable of eliminating countless lives, whilst also leaving the infrastructure completely intact.

Following this revelation, the S.A.U. buckled down, and its government began manufacturing as much of this refined toxin as it could, prompting its neighboring nations to take action and engage in conflict across the South American continent.

Despite the severity of the situation, the conflict was never considered the third World War. This is because the public was never let on about the actual specifics of the confrontation, with word being spread around that it was only a series of riots breaking out across the continent due to a non-existent major drug trade.

In reality, the South American Union fought viciously on all fronts, even fielding their own prototype toxin bombs against enemy combatants, which swayed the tide of battle in their favour despite being hit on all sides by the Canadian, Japanese, and British Unions.

Because of this, near the end of the conflict, nuclear weapons were authorized, and a large portion of the inner continent was turned into a nuclear wasteland, along with the destruction of any documented stores and growth areas of Death Lilly.

The waste material that resulted from the conflict was dumped in an undisclosed location, and, only two years later, the first P.E.M.F. attacked.

"Project Warmonger"

[Description]:

Although it is a well-known fact that the first P.E.M.F. to emerge jump-started the initiative to create robotic humanoids to combat such a powerful threat, what isn't as documented is the true progenitor of the secret division.

Long ago, the Pacific Proving Grounds was the stage of Humanity's first recorded engagement with a P.E.M.F., known in modern day as 'The Alpha'. This creature emerged shortly after the bombing of Hiroshima, prompting the American government to begin fielding nuclear bombs against it under the guise of these bombings being 'tests'; the creature eventually disappeared after the last bomb in the region was fielded.

After the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was put into action in the autumn of 1963, Dr. Kyohei Yamane, a researcher for the Japanese and American governments as well as an old friend of Dr. Daisuke Serizawa (the first man to document the Alpha), founded Project Warmonger as a future preventative measure should more organisms such as the Alpha appear.

At first, research was put towards developing standard anti-P.E.M.F. weaponry, but as modern technology grew and grew, talk of developing specialty tools capable of engaging the P.E.M.F.s soon spread throughout the division.

This action plan went through many phases, at first focusing on improving standard vehicle designs, which eventually led to the development of many of the modern vehicles that are now standard in the 22nd century. However, most intriguing were plans for developing humanoid combat vehicles, much larger than any previously attempted armor systems, though still nowhere near the size of standard Warmonger units.

However, the known physical limitations back then prevented such ideas from coming into fruition, until the fateful first encounter with a P.E.M.F. Ironically enough, it was its emergence that led to the most advanced technology ever created: the ability to harness, amplify, and control non-standard DE energy. With this, the armor systems of old were brought up again, but up-scaled in order to go toe-to-toe with the creatures.
