  1. Hyakim- Proud mountain-dwelling warriors on the eastern seaboard of Ulica.
  2.
  3. The Hyakim live mostly in a small handful of walled city-states, which exert control over the nearby orchards and fertile farmland. Their main export is a flowering narcotic, which produces a milky liquid that they imbibe as other cultures do wine. They also are known for producing fine silks, quality cheeses and milks, and beautiful gilded calligraphy, all of which they are inordinately proud of.
  4. They live a hard, difficult live- between the constant internecine wars, there are also roving tribes of goat-men who occasionally mount raids on what little arable farmland exists. They thus value martial ability, and the ideal Hyakim is an erudite warrior-poet who acts first and apologizes later. Betrayal is a black sin against them and they have long memories.
  5. The Hyakim usually wear a long-sleeved robe that terminates about the knees. They generally stick to a single, muted colour on their dress, although the upper class ornament the fringes and sleeves with designs, as they prefer. During the cold weather they wear long cloaks or capes which double as blankets. Priests, kings, and generals will wear elaborate golden headgear during official functions. Others wear simple wool caps or nothing at all. They keep their hair long. Their footwear is sandals or nothing. Their skin is olive and their hair is usually dark.
  6. Most Hyakim are human, but the area was originally settled by Goliaths, who continue to live among the humans. Orcs are relatively unknown. Goblins and ogres live in nomadic bands in the more desolate parts of the mountain. Wood elves mostly live in swamps along with scattered lizardfolk, and are not friendly towards travellers. There are Drakes in the mountains, who prey on the sheep herds and occasionally men who wander too far from safety.
  7. Hyakim trade with the Sevedorian cities to their east (which they consider a boon to the Sevedorians) and with the mountain dwarves (whom they consider cautious and inscrutable) to their north.

  11. Chionesu- Theocratic God-kings
  12.
  13. The Chionesu are swarthy men who live their lives as part of a grand Celestial Hierarchy. All under the earth is part of the grand scheme of things and it is their duty to serve in the capacity for which they have been designed. All authority and all of that which is good comes from the God-King, who rules from inside a vast and ancient temple complex. The land is rich and food is plentiful. They prefer their food and drink spicy and have a hearty sense of humour, even allowing jabs and japes at their customs and even their own god-king.
  14. Their priests spend their time delving into the darkest, deepest mysteries of existence itself, chattering away at one another until the darkest hours of the night. They wield powerful elemental magics taken, as they know, from understanding the mysteries of creation.
  15. Though their lands are populous and their warriors brave, the Chionesu do not usually bother to invade neighbouring lands, reasoning that they already live in the centre of the world and what could the rest of the world offer compared to the wonders they have within their wide borders? And they may not be wrong- with an incredible irrigation system, fertile lands, and educated philosophers, what could be beyond their lands that they wish to see?
  16. Outside of the city proper, but making up large nomadic bands live powerful and proud Ogres, who can recite their oral history back a dozen generations and whose magical secrets are unparalleled. They are paid a tribute in gold yearly by the Chionesu to leave them alone and spare them their raids. In turn, the Ogres generally raid the Batavi instead, much to that nation's displeasure. These Ogres call themselves the Sons of the Desert and make reliable, if unorthodox, mercenaries in times of conflict.
  17. Elves are highly regarded as scribes and scholars and legend states that it was the elves in this part of the world who taught magic and theology to the Chionesu. Though the Elves prefer to live in secluded oases, their learning and judgement is legendary and are often called on as judges by the smallfolk, in exchange for a pittance in gold or service.
  18.
  19. The Chionesu have open trade and regular contact with the Sevedorians to the west (whom they consider petty but harmless), the Aurlirians to the south (whom they consider uncultured and unsufferable as a rule), and the Batavi to the southwest (whom they consider of little worth in general).

  23. Aurliria- Expansionistic Empire
  24.
  25. Aurlirians are haughty and warlike, and are led by a singular King, named Roland. He claims descent from Godrick, the conqueror, as do most of his court. Prestige in Aurliria is measured by descent from one of several founders, and these descendants form insular and cliquish houses. Noble politics is marked by constant jockeying and squabbling between these noble houses. They have a habit of adopting useful lowborn people to act as servants, and complete loyalty is expected of them.
  26. Despite this, the two official cults are the twin faiths of the Watchful Mother and the Father of Light. Every subject is expected to pay lip service to this religion and attend a service during the important civic holidays and for official royal events.
  27. The unsettled snowy wastes to the west are home to nomadic ogre bands and fortified by a ring of castles. West Aurlirians consider themselves tougher and more productive than the lazier but more populous East Aurlirians, whom they consider decadent. There are rich sources of iron in the kingdom and thick armour and heavy weaponry are the rule in any armoury. The people wear thick, padded clothing decorated with earthy colours. Their skin tends to be light, as does their hair. They are generally tall people who prefer to feed on fatty meats and hearty fortified wines.
  28. Their main enemies are the Dark Elves, who embark on devastating slave raids from hidden tunnels underneath the surface, and the frequent Ogre raids from the west. In lean years they merely endure, but in years of plenty they strike out against both races, as well as against the Batavi, who they consider their main rivals.
  29. They have made common foes with the Deep Dwarves, who lend their crafting expertise and ancient knowledge in exchange for military help and food from the surface.

  33. Batavi- Feudal Duchies
  34.
  35. The Batavi are culturally similar to the Aurlirians, but more wary and smaller. They ride horses and prefer ranged combat to melee, and the open plains where they live reinforce this. There are really two kinds of Batavi; city Batavi and plains Batavi.
  36. City Batavi are literate scholars and builders who reinforce their cities and nominally control bands of plains Batavi, who make up the bulk of the fighting forces. Every now and again a group of plains Batavi tires of paying tribute to one city or the other, raids it, and settles down, thus completing the Batavi cycle. Outsiders see it is inefficient and violent, but the Batavi see it as part of a great cycle ensuring that the ways of warrior and scholar alike never quite die out.
  37. Falconry is a huge part of their life, and they worship gods of sky, of war, and of animal husbandry. The greatest prize a Batavian can take is the head of his rival, of which any warrior has many. The next best is a good horse or falcon, which is a source of much pride. Batavi look down on thieves but murder does not particularly bother them. He should have been more careful and chosen his friends better!
  38. The Batavi trade slaves, horses, and falcons with the Aurlirians, whom they consider too bound by laws and cities to be truly noble. They skirmish with a mixed goblin/orc empire to their west intermittently, and whom they respect greatly even as they swear blood oaths against them.

  42. THE WORLD
  43.
  44. There are two main continents where humans dwell- Ulica and Ikun. Ikun is the site of the oldest continuous human settlement, but obviously the humans on either continent argue constantly about which continent is humanity's true home.
  45.
  46. Ulica is mountainous and temperate in the west, forested and warm in the south, and flat and humid in the west. The north is mostly a barren wasteland and generally uninhabited by humans, although monsters make their homes there. The land is mostly thin farmland, supplemented by ubiquitous herds of large, shaggy bison-like herd animals.
  47.
  48. Ikun is warm and flat in the east, temperate and wet in the middle, and colder in the northeast. The continent is covered in vast forests and jungles, separated by a mountain chain that runs from east to west.
  49.
  50. There is a vast sea to the south of both continents, full of island chains where primitive humans, halflings, goblins, dragonborn, and others live.
