- Best critiques (non-hagiographic) of the Logos Hope missionary christian ship touted as the world's largest floating book fair, operated my 400 unpaid volunteers who sign-up for a period of one to two years and have to pay for their living expenses - so that they can serve an all-powerful, omniscient, benevolent god. Along with the +/- $20 entrance fee for the visitors who had to wait in line for 2 hours, the Logos Hope is an excellent bait-and-switch operation all around.

- A great initiative I was excited to be a part of because I had never experienced it before. I didnt complain standing in line for close to 1hr 30 min with my toddler. I was determined to take her. My bubble was quickly bursted right after I purchased books that I didn't necessarily need but I felt compelled to support. One cashier stopped a young man from making an announcement in French because she said they don't understand it anyway. Then they both laughed. She quickly regretted her choice of words because I was able to reply to her in English. I informed her that was a horrible generalization that should have never left her mouth; a thought that should have never been even formed. That was racist and a stereotype. She was shocked that I replied. She knows what she said was wrong because she apologized. I dont want the apology because if I was not there to hear it she would repeat it over and over because she was never caught! For those that feel the same should not come to Haiti under the false pretense of spreading Christianity and God's work. Fake prophets!!! Haitians speak many languages and her statement was said with Malice because I was not the only one to call her out. You guys ought to be a shame of yourselves. I was very offended. I had just tortured myself and my child in the hot sun, paid to enter, purchased unnecessary books just to hear a representative speak so poorly of Haitians. Furthermore everyone thought it was okay to speak to us in English. Why didn't you feel the need to have a person that speaks creole in the lines? Is it because you feel all Haitians speak English? Another horrible generalization. Haitians speak Creole and French get with the program and whomever is polluting your minds get rid of them. I am very disappointed. You guys are supposed to be Christians?? I truly hope she was one bad apple. Educate yourselves.

- The boys are very nice and friendly. They only failed to say that more than 50 % of the books are of religious subjects and that it is an attempt to evangelization in every rule, especially by the book of the gospels that give you to when you leave. A waste of time.

- Fui con mis nietas a ver el barco y sólo pudimos ver un sótano lleno de libros a la venta. En su mayoría, libros religiosos.
- I went with my granddaughters to see the boat and we could only see a basement full of books for sale. Mostly, religious books.

See More
- I really enjoyed the visit I made to the ship.
- I just didn't like the books.
- 98 % of the books are in English.
- I do not know if in all countries that are going to be the same and I do not know whether it is available in Portuguese.
- But knowing that Cape Verde is a Portuguese official language, they should try to present to the client book in the majority in Portuguese.
- The books are mostly about religion, children's tales should vary that

- I really enjoyed the whole experience but I really wished that there had been some indication beforehand regarding the fact that you can only pay cash or credit card. I had a debit card so I had to leave all the books behind

- The security at the door where unfriendly and demanded on taking my leatherman away due to it been a risk to enter with it. When I asked for a receipt they refused and also refused to contact there manager so I could speak with him. Spoilt a good experience by not having any signage with regards to what is not allowed in the ship and wanted to hold onto my belongings without issuing a receipt, very unprofessional.

- We went to view the bookstore and attend the International Cultural Show on the Logos Hope. Thought we would enjoy something to drink and eat at the cafe as well. Everything was extremely affordable but beyond that it was terribly disappointing. I believe that everything has its own time and place & what isn't made clear at the onset is the strong Christian ethos. The bookstore mostly has Christian Literature although in terms of literature it is also more accommodating of children. When you complete your visit at the bookstore there are people present to guide you in "God's word" out of the passage to the cafe. At the cafe there's gospel music being played in the background. The menu at the cafe is limited, everything is cheap (and in this case expect the quality to match the price). Still we waited for the international cultural show to begin thinking that we should give it a chance (because again no where do they mention that there would be a particular religious motive involved). As soon as the show begins (almost half an hour later than scheduled to) there is mention of the bible, Jesus, etc but the show proceeds normally thereafter about an hour into the programme (which was a display of amateur performers some decent (one positive was the use of technology to enhance the performance) a pulpit is brought out and the real preaching begins at this point we quietly stand up and make our way to the exit. :( For parents bringing their children along perhaps pre-book a ship tour to make the experience more fun. This experience is most suitable for a Christian audience, churches and youth groups.
- Melissa Leander I don't think they have ever hidden the fact that they are Christian though. The whole mission of OM (Their organisation) is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Everyone on the ship is a volunteer who has taken time (as long as 1 year or more) out of their lives to work as a volunteer. Most people on the ship are between 18-26... alot of them straight outta high school. So definitely no professionals on board. It's a shame you were disappointed. But the OM ships ministry has been doing this since 1977. So ja.... definitely not a secret what their mission is...
- Mehrunnissa Mullah Muhammad All the people that I know (including myself) visited the Logos Hope because of its onboard bookstore. If you read articles, viewed the about page or just googled Logos Hope, as I said in my review the "Chritian Ethos isn't made clear at the onset", the most you get is that "it is a private, non-profit, charitable organisation." And everything you mention in your comment, whilst on the ship you learn all of this. There isn't anything wrong with it having a particular "mission," it should just be made clear at the onset so people who wish to visit can do so knowingly. My review is quite balanced and is meant to be informative and I think it adequately does this.
- Melissa Leander Fair enough :-) growing up in a Christian home and going to a church that is very missions orientated, we just assume that everyone knows about the Logos, Doulos etc. And we don't think of them as "Christian" coz that is what we're used to, but we tend to forget that not everyone is.
- Rob Everyman Slinger I was going to come but now that I've learnt its hard sell christian I don't think I will. FYI, its called lying by omission
- Melissa Leander Under the about us section of their website, the line that says "to reflect God's compassion for the world" and their number 1 core value being Loving God... not sure what they omitted or lied about

- Rob Everyman Slinger You're being disingenuous. The marketing ploy in one of a timeshare salesman. I think the colloquial is "bait and switch". I do feel for you personally, no one likes being preached at, but it is still essentially dishonest and maybe a little patronizing to not be upfront about it by burying your motives in the fine print. Its also a bit disappointing in the sense that christians and challenging reading tend not to go together so your selection might be a bit lightweight

- Melissa Leander Thanks Mehrunnissa. I think the two of us understood each other after our posts last week. Some people have obviously never heard of JRR Tolkien or C.S. Lewis, both born again Christians, who have penned some of the greatest literary works in history! Enjoyed by everyone, not just christians. Providing some of the most challenging reads of our time. Anyway. I didn't comment on on the original review to fight, but was trying to find clarity. Which I did. Thanks for the chat.

- Rob Everyman Slinger They weren't 'born again' , they were Christian. 'Born again' is an american bastardisation of Christianity which, if I'm being uncharitable, was to make money
- Lindria Oosthuizen My boyfriend and I were also quite disappointed as we do not practice Christianity. There were also a lot of Muslim people in the queue for 2 hours - if we had know two thirds of it was Christian we wouldn't have gone. Same reason why I don't go to CUM books. It's fine if that's what they're about, but a bit of a heads up would have been nice so we didn't have to waste half our afternoon in a queue.
- CoCo Chanelle If you don't like Christian stuff why go to a Christian boat

- Lindria Oosthuizen What we're saying is it wasn't communicated that it was solely Christian. None of the advertisements I saw mentioned anything along those lines.
- Abdulmugheeth Petersen No. You are right regarding the fact that it bring pro-Christian is not being overtly included in promotional material...or at least through word-of-mouth (which is how I heard about this) the general public isn't promoting it from a Christian standpoint. Right now, through this Facebook page, is my first time reading that it's a Christian organisation, which I don't have an issue with, but the point is that now I won't go there looking forward to the secular International Literary Fair that people around me have made me to expect.
