  4. Chapter 3: Old navy.
  5.
  6. >The sun gently descends over the horizon, the great blue sky taken by the looming twilight of the coming night.
  7. >Stars peek out in small scattered patches, bedazzling the air with their sparkling beauty.
  8. >The soft breeze of evening blowing across the expanse of the savanna tickles over your exposed skin, chilling you comfortably, a welcome replacement to the blistering heat of the day it followed.
  9. >You sure wish you could enjoy this peaceful scenery, but it's hard to when you've got a monkey on your back gabbing your ears off.
  10. >For 5 hours Straight.
  11. >"Okay, I got another one!" she says. "I'm sure you'll laugh this time!"
  12. >A collective groan from the rest of you is her response.
  13. >"So. A monkey, a man, a mare, a mongoose, and a hyena walk into a bar-"
  14. >"God, shutup already!" Dikeledi snaps. "You're driving me crazy over here! Can't you shut your trap for 5 seconds!?"
  15. >"Why Yes, I can!" Minka replies.
  16. >Silence. Sweet sweet silence.
  17. >...
  18. >Don't tell me.
  19. >"Times up! Now was I..."
  20. >Dikeledi growls.
  21. >"Right! So they get to they-"
  22. "Oi, Minka, put a lid on it will ya? I like you and all, but for how long you've been goin on, I'm afraid I won't hold her back if she snaps. I might even hold the bag out for her."
  23. >You warn.
  24. >"Anon, that's so cruel." Fluttershy states, disapprovingly.
  25. >"I know right!?" Minka agrees, "I didn't even get to the punch line!"
  26. >You think you hear a tiny face palm.
  27. >Well, Guess who's awake now?
  28. >But the sun's almost down.
  29.
  30. >Just as she takes a deep breath, Chappy jams your hat into her mouth, as far as he can reach.
  31. >It looks like he's trying to choke her with it, but is too short to reach all the way.
  32. "Hey, hey, alright little guy, that's enough."
  33. >You say, lifting him up by his tail.
  34. >You rip your stetson out of Minka's mouth before she bites down.
  35. "I need that, and you like it more than me. Last thing we want is for it to get mixed with whatever's in there."
  36. >He squeaks loud, shaking violently, trying to swing his way at the chimp. [She's a beast! a Heretic! She must be silenced! She must be slain! Kill her now!]
  37. >"Oh, my." says Fluttershy, a bit concerned. Whatever Chappy was squealing about, it certainly wasn't about cakes and candy.
  38. "Calm down, buddy, she's not worth it."
  39. >Minka just cackles to herself in your pack, earning a piercing glare from to meerkat.
  40. >And with that, genuine silence fills the air, all of you savoring it, knowing that with Minka still around, it could only last so long.
  41. >A good long while passes in peace, when Fluttershy speaks up, timidly prodding your leg as you walk to get your attention. "U-um. Anon?"
  42. >You whip your head to look down at her.
  43. >She squeaks, almost jumping, before catching herself.
  44. >You probably did that too fast, but you've still not shaken the full stress of the last few hours.
  45. "Yes, Fluttershy."
  46. >"S-so, um. A-are y- I mean, H-how have you been?"
  47. "Huh?"
  48. >"W-well, you've been g-gone from Ponyville so long, a-a month actually, a-and I-I... Our friends and I missed you. I mean, you seem well, and that's great. B-buy didn't r-really say much to anyone before you left a-and then you were just gone and I- we got worried you weren't coming back a-and..." she trails off.
  49. "What was that, Flutters?"
  50. >She stops.
  51. >She doesn't stop moving, but bites her lip and looks away for a moment.
  52. >She closes her eyes and takes a breath.
  53. >"Why did you leave, anon!?" she blurts out, startling everyone with her sudden outburst.
  54. >"S-sorry... but, why?"
  55.
  56. >You almost trip.
  57. "What do you mean, Fluttershy?"
  58. >You say, you can tell where this is going.
  59. >"W-well, you just left out of the blue! The only ponies who knew you were gone were Pinkie and Zecora! And the only reason Pinkie knows is... well you know how Pinkie gets. But when she told me you left, I could tell she was hesitating. I thought all those sweets were finally getting to her, but when Zecora told where you went, I knew something was wrong!"
  60. "I-I *ehem* Well, you know how ponies are. I didn't want to get everyone worried about me. A man needs to get out and have an adventure sometimes, you know? See the world."
  61. >"Is that why you sold your house?"
  62. >Shit, she found out about that.
  63. >Well, it has been a month, you're sure she'd find out eventually.
  64. >But still, you didn't expect her to come looking for you half-way across the world/merged continent, especially on her salary.
  65. >But then again, with Twilight being a princess now, she can do that.
  66. >You sigh.
  67. "Fine, If, you really want to know why."
  68. >You look around, Dikeledi has stopped to see what was going on behind her.
  69. >Minka is looking between you and the pegasus with concern.
  70. >Even Chappy poked his head out.
  71. "You guys... walk ahead of us, I have to talk to Fluttershy."
  72. >You raise your hand to the meerkat.
  73. "Privately."
  74. >He understands, jumping onto your hand and bouncing off like a diving board, flipping through the air and landing perfectly on Dikeledi's back.
  75. >Minka climbs out of your bag and joins him.
  76. >"Okay," Dikeledi says, "but make sure you keep up, I still wanna get there by sunrise."
  77. "Don't worry, we can walk and talk."
  78. >You say, looking down to Fluttershy.
  79. >It would break your heart, the look she's giving you.
  80. >But right now, it doesn't affect you as much.
  81. >"Alright" she says, turning around and continuing the lead.
  82. >You and Fluttershy hand back so they can get some distance on you before you start walking.
  83. >"Anon?"
  84. >You try to find your words. You're not sure how you're gonna say this.
  85.
  86. I just couldn't stay, Fluttershy. I always felt isolated and alone, despite all the friends I had."
  87. >"D-don't worry about that. If you come back, I'll make sure you don't ever feel that way. Both me and Thu-"
  88. "That's just it, Fluttershy."
  89. >You interrupt.
  90. >"What? What do you mean?"
  91. "Fluttershy... do you remember that locket I gave you on your birthday a few months ago?"
  92. >"Yes, I do. It was very sweet, and I'm grateful you gave it to me. I'm wearing it even now, see?" she reaches into her coat, a small glint coming from her chest as she pulls at the spherical piece of jewelry, hanging around her neck by a thin silver chain.
  93. >It sparkles in the light of the moon that now hung in the sky.
  94. >"I've been taking good care of it ever since, and look." she opens it. "There's a little picture of you and me at the ball Rarity hosted at Twilight's castle. Remember that?"
  95. >Boy, you were fucked up that night. Your designer suit tie around your forehead like some headband, and your collar popped up and jacket unbuttoned. A giant red stain in the middle of your shirt from the punch, spiked by Pinkie of course.
  96. >Rarity had Berry Punch make it, and really pressed on the fact that she wanted it to be more like a fine wine with a noticeable fruity flavor, since she wanted to get members of the town involved in the festivities.
  97. >Naturally, Berry volunteered to make the drinks, and Rarity, as much as she wanted to say now, couldn't turn her down with all those ponies watching. Berry really wanted to do it, something about it being good for her business.
  98. >Wait, where are you going with this.
  99. >You look at the happy faces in the picture.
  100. >You're leaning against Fluttershy, laughing your arse off, while she tries to keep balance for both of you.
  101. >She always took good care of you.
  102. >You wanted to return the favor.
  103. "Yeah... those were some good times."
  104. >She smiles at you. "See? Look how happy you are in this picture. You don't miss those times?"
  105. >You really do.
  106. >But
  107.
  108. "Fluttershy, do you know why I gave you that locket?"
  109. >"W-well..." she's trying to remember something. "You said it was to show how much you loved and appreciated me for all I've done for you."
  110. "Close."
  111. >You say, looking up at the stars.
  112. >The sun has gone down now, the sky illuminated by the brilliance of the moon, and the millions of stars dotting the void in which it dwells.
  113. >Even here, Luna's work can be appreciated.
  114. >"Close?" Fluttershy says. "What do you mean?"
  115. "That locket, Fluttershy, was my to show my love and appreciation for you, yes, and all that you've done. But did you ever notice the inscription on the back?."
  116. >"The... i-inscription?" She twirls the locket.
  117. >Her expression falls as she read, "For the one dearest to my heart, a love given no other."
  118. >It's written in English.
  119. >Basic, in this world, is only similar to your English by word of mouth.
  120. >The written language, however, is something much more foreign.
  121. >You taught Fluttershy a bit of English, per her request, when she got curious after seeing you write in your journal.
  122. >She was keen to learn what she could about you, to get to know about the one she spared bed space fore on a more personal level.
  123. >Not as obsessively as Twilight, and obviously not as far as you wished she did.
  124. "I was so happy that day. I thought you had accepted my confession to you. I even had the best sleep of my life that night."
  125. >You say, still gazing up at the stars.
  126. "But then... a week later, I saw you hanging with... him."
  127. >You paused, not wanting to say his name.
  128. >"Thunderlane..."
  129. "Yeah, that guy."
  130. >You don't really dislike, Thunderpain. Hell, you he and Rainbow Dash were your drinking buddies.
  131. >You always thought those two would look great together.
  132. >But you guess that wasn't the case.
  133. >Rainbow dash was into... other things.
  134. >And Thunderlane seemed to have had eyes for another mare.
  135. >Your mare.
  136.
  137. "At first, I was fine with it. I thought you were just trying to get along with one of my friends. Heck, I even stepped in for a proper introduction."
  138. >You shift your view forward to the trio looking back at you.
  139. >Their looks a mix of worry, confusion, and suggestive.
  140. >Dammit Minka
  141. "But after a month, I started to notice a pattern. I saw the signs; things became real clear to me."
  142. >You sigh again.
  143. "So, I moved out. I bought a house on a nice hill with a good view. Got lucky with the price, it was pretty cheap. Especially for one with a second floor. Thought maybe it would be good for you. 'Good for Fluttershy, at least she's happy. I'll give those two the space the need, don't want to be in the way.' I thought to myself."
  144. >You glare at the chimp miming a blowjob in front of you.
  145. >She only winks at you in response.
  146. >She gets a good spark to the head.
  147. >Thanks, Chappy.
  148. "But then... he moved in with you."
  149. >You continue too look ahead.
  150. >Fluttershy has long since placed the locket back into her coat, now just staring at you, trying to make eye contact.
  151. >You don't give her it.
  152. "For 4 months, I got to see the girl I love, get coddled by the colt I thought I could call a friend. Four months I had to deal with the pain of getting indirectly shot down and backstapped at the same time. But you know what the kicker was?"
  153. >Fluttershy looks at the grown now. "The... the proposal?"
  154. "The proposal."
  155. >You confirm
  156. "I wake up in the morning to greet our resident wall-eyed mailmare with a muffin, a little routine thing I got into. She needs to get more appreciation for how hard she works, given her handicap. In my mail, I found an invitation. An invitation to a wedding for the mare I loved and the colt I... don't really care about anymore."
  157. >"..."
  158. "I don't know what happened next. All I know is that I woke up late in the evening, bottles of Applejack Danials and Vodka at my ankles, and a bag packed with essentials with a note on it reading 'Adventure!'"
  159.
  160. >You grip the strap of your adventure pack as your recall your last days in Equestria.
  161. "I don't know what my drunk self was planning, but I knew then, that I wanted to leave. I wanted an escape. To leave the past behind, and find a new break. I planned to send postcards when I found a settlement, but I haven't found any with that kind of travel power yet. I forget your world's Africa isn't as far as mine in those terms, even with the magic and the inconsistency of time relative to the places in Equestria in relation to my old home."
  162. >You chuckle
  163. >You really were gonna send post cards, after you cooled off of course.
  164. >You've had almost a month to get over it, so the only thing in your way is the lack for transfer.
  165. >You hope Zebrabwe has something of it.
  166. >You've got some anonymous crude-drawn-dick mail to send to a certain pegasus, now that Fluttershy isn't there to intercept..
  167. >Said pegasus is just silently walking beside you.
  168. >After a moment she speaks up, "Now that you mention it... I don't know how I never noticed before... Oh, I could be so dense sometimes!"
  169. >She lightly stomps at the ground in her path.
  170. >"I'm so mad at myself right now I could just... just..." she takes in a deep breath. "([{aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.....}])."
  171. >You snigger
  172. >Classic Fluttershy.
  173. >"I-I'm sorry Anon. So so sorry. I didn't mean to put you through all that. I-I *hic* I..." well now you've gone and made her cry.
  174. >Good Job dick-wad.
  175. >Hey, she's the one wh- *slap*
  176. >No!
  177. >Wtf!? How!
  178. >Shenanigans! Now console her!
  179. >You figuratively rub your mental slap.
  180. >Fine...
  181. "Hey... Don't worry about it, Butterfly."
  182. >She seems to calm a bit, hearing you call her by the terrible and obvious nickname you gave her.
  183. >You stop and kneel to wipe the tears forming in her eyes.
  184. >"B-but *sniff* but..." she tries to say.
  185. "Hey... no tears, okay? Like you said earlier, I've been gone about a month. I've had ample time to get over myself. Especially with the shit I've gone through in that time."
  186. >You say.
  187.
  188. >She manages a half-hearted chuckle and you smile.
  189. >Then, you join her, your laughter a bit more genuine.
  190. >How could you be such a puts?
  191. >You're laughter seems to be infectious, as she begins to laugh harder, both of you getting into a good guffaw.
  192. >The laughter dies down after a while, you sitting on the grass, propping yourself up with one arm, Fluttershy leaning on to you trying to catch herself.
  193. >You're wiping a tear from your eye with your semi-free hand when you hear someone shout, their voice echoing in the empty savanna.
  194. >"Hey, laggers! Hurry up will ya! I'm suppose to be leading at least one of you to zebra town!" the voice of Dikeledi well carried, even though she's almost a blot at this distance.
  195. >You sigh
  196. "Yeah, we should probably catch up to them."
  197. >"Wouldn't want to make her mad. I heard get about as violent as a lot of griffons when they get impatient." Fluttershy says.
  198. "Yeah..."
  199. >You say, looking down the way as she paces side to side in your view agitatedly.
  200. >Fluttershy giggles.
  201. "What?"
  202. >You ask.
  203. >"You've got that same goofy look on your face that you used to give me. I wonder how come I never noticed why" she says.
  204. >You feel a heat rise to your cheeks.
  205. "I-I... it's not that bad, is it?"
  206. >You almost bite your tongue
  207. >"It's okay, I think it's adorable." She giggles.
  208. >Your face is so red now, it could probably be seen the same way one would see mars at night.
  209. "D-dammit, Fluttershy..."
  210.
