15. Hi, I'm Trihex! I speedrun video games, that is, play the ones I enjoy a shitton over and over to achieve 'perfect' play of them through being very fluent in as many aspects of the game as possible.

16. This process is rather repetitive, and can be grueling at times, which is why I (it varies amongst others who are into speedrunning) only do it with games I have a real passion for.

17. I tend to enjoy platformers more than any other specific genre, but I'm far from cultured on all of them so I still have quite a bit of soul-searching to do.

18. Prior to meeting up with Jiano and Cosmo (info at bottom) in 2011, I never knew my private hobby of speedrunning had become a social thing with streaming it. So huge shoutouts to them for me being where I am now!
  19.

  20.

  21.

  22.

  23.
What is Speedrunning?

  24.

  25.
26. Speedrunning is the act of beating games quickly, sometimes for personal amusement, but often to achieve the fastest times in certain categories. In most cases it'll be either 100%, a community-agreed goal of all meaningful completed tasks in a given game or any%, beating games as quickly as possible with no regard of what items/tasks are completed in the process.

27. If dedicated enough, some speedrunners go for World Records in their games, verifiably having the fastest time overall.
  28.

  29.

  30.

  31.
Why do I see the widescreen bars on your stream?

  32.

  33.

  34.
35. Modern games run at a standard widescreen HD ratio of 16:9, with most streams, if able, running resolution of 1280 x 720 (720p).
  36.

  37.

  38.
39. And the problem with that is most popular channels settle for overlapping their webcams into the game-head, which may obscure information.
  40.

  41.

  42.
43. I avoid that problem by broadcasting in a wider aspect ratio, opting for cinematic-wide 2.39:1 which can easily fit 16:9 widescreen games and have extra space for webcam feed without overlapping information/display.

44. Likewise, this helps for 4:3 (SD) games.
  45.

  46.

  47.
48. As you can see, I back-up the wider-ratio with extra resolution so quality isn't lost to accommodate, but rather, is increased!

49. So when you see widescreen bars, it's because my stream is literally that wide. I'll have a solution to view my streams natively in 2.39:1 very soon though!

  57.

  58. I'm one of the few streams that actually broadcast console gaming in 60 FPS. It's easy to overlook this, but you're dumping literally half the information per second to encode!

59. This 7 frame (7/60th of a second) animation of Fox's Shine in Super Smash Bros. Melee is a prime example.

60. Typically, only half of this move would've been seen on any other stream.

  63. As of right now though, I can only capture component input (Y Pb Pr) consoles at 60 FPS (360, PS3, Wii, Xbox 1).

64. I'm looking into solutions to get 60 FPS capture on older consoles that use composite (yellow/white/red) & S-Video feed!

Feel free to PM me if you have any information/help! :)

  80. It's the underrated 1995 classic, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for Super Famicom/Nintendo. Many supposed "Mario Fans" never heard of the game, probably due to it being one of the Super Nintendo "Swan Song" games—It came out extremely late in the console's life, only a year before the Nintendo 64 debuted with Super Mario 64—which is really unfortunate. It's great because minimal gimmicks or new mechanics are introduced beyond the first world. And for the remaining five worlds, the amazing level design takes over alone as you help Baby Mario unite with his brother.

81. If there's ever one thing you take from seeing me stream this game so often, I hope that you get encouraged to try out Yoshi's Island. No, seriously, go do that! Even if you've watched me for hours, your understanding of the amazing production value this gem packs would blow your mind! From a sophisticated physics(?), and momentum system that allow impressively flexible alternatives to the platforming challenges to the distinctive art style still prominent in Yoshi gaming culture(?) today, it all started here!

  114.

  115. There are two control methods to use concerning aiming and firing eggs. Using Patient Control Method, you press A once to initiate the aiming process. Then press A again to fire your egg. Hasty Control Method, by comparison, requires you to hold A during the entire aiming process, and release A to fire.

116. Patient gives you more control, technically, but is a little unrealistic during complicated executions for move levels in Yoshi's Island. Hasty doesn't demand your thumb's attention constantly, which allows jumping and grabbing to happen sooner.

117. I've observed that almost universally, Hasty Control Method is used for speedrunning.

  122.

  123.

  124. Aiming eggs for Yoshi to fire is simple in execution, but can easily get complicated to perfect. Yoshi can move (at full speed if enough space is allowed to accelerate) while aiming eggs. The aim cursor moves at a set pace. You may allow it to move by just holding the aim button, pressing a direction while initiating the aim will cause it to rest at certain positions. Likewise, the cursor can be stopped and "rested" at any point by pressing R while aiming.

125. If "up" direction is held during initiation, it'll rest at the Top Position (A).

126. If no direction aside from the direction traveling is held, the cursor will start the the Neutral Position (B).

127. To illustrate the range of the aiming possibilities, I've included an approximation of the Middle Position (C).

128. For most shots though, Middle Position is rarely used due to waiting for the cursor's set pace to travel there. A combination of Neutral or Top Position's aims plus ricocheting off walls or surfaces to simulate actually doing a Middle

  132. There are 3 different egg types in Yoshi's Island. Green Eggs, which are the standard eggs, are the only type Yoshi can produce through eating enemies. They contain nothing when they explode. Yellow Eggs contain 2 coins, which is useless for speedrunnung. Red Eggs contain 2 stars upon explosion(!), this is important as collection of stars aids in 100% completion of levels. Modern optimized routing for 100% almost always involves acquiring a certain amount of stars from Red Egg'ing various things in levels.

133. Non-green eggs can be obtained from egg blocks in certain levels, but the most convenient way to produce Red Eggs is through ricocheting. The figure above(?) demonstrates a typical-trihex sequence of bouncing eggs from a low ceiling to floor turning a Green Egg into a useful Red Egg without losing speed.
