  3. ---
  4. Handout p. 138 part B - prewriting
  5.
  6. Brainstorming: Write as many reasons as you can think of to study at Stafford House.
  7.
  8. Then add one or two specific examples for each reason. (If you picked “courses” as a reason, which specific courses here are good for you?)
  9.
  10. Edit the list: cross out ideas you don’t want to write about, add other details to the reasons you kept, decide on the order you will use on your outline.
  11. How can we choose the order?
  12. - most important reason first, least important last
  13. - least important first, most important last
  14. - chronology of your personal decision to come here
  15. - put related reasons together (students and teachers = people, teachers and courses = academic, students and activities = social, etc.)
  16.
  17. p. 139 - Put your reasons and examples into the outline. Complete the title and topic sentence.
  18. ---
  19. Remember: This outline is for a single paragraph, but you can easily write a 5-6 paragraph essay if you write a complete paragraph for each reason, and then add an introduction and conclusion paragraph.
  20. ---
  21. Homework: finish your outline and answer the questions at the top of p. 141 (about the paragraph on p. 140)
  22.
  23. “Costa Rica” is the topic
  24. “is a great place to spend a semester doing wildlife research for two reasons” is the controlling idea
