  1. "So you're the 'master' Cassandra keeps talking about?" You ask the man standing before you in the bizarre landscape.
  2.
  3. "Bingo kid, I knew I was right in choosing you as an emissary." The man says, pointing at you with dual finger guns.
  4.
  5. "Why do you look..Human though?" You ask, clearly confused as to why Cassandra's creator would look even remotely human
  6.
  7. "Oh I can assure you, I'm anything but, it's just..well my normal appearance would give you nightmares for days, much easier to look like someone you recognize."
  8.
  9. "So you look like Rodney Dangerfield?"
  10.
  11. "Easier for the human mind to comprehend," the thing said, sitting down on piece of landscape that jutted out.
  12.
  13. "So what is this place? and how did I get here?" You inquire, hoping to shed some light on the situation.
  14.
  15. "Well to put it bluntly you humans call it 'the realm of madness', one of our earlier emissaries wrote about it, Trying to remember the name. Think it ended in craft or crafts"
  16.
  17. You look puzzled, before registering a name that comes to mind, "You mean H.P. Lovecraft?" you ask
  18.
  19. "Yeah that's the one," the thing before you says with a snap of his fingers. "Anyways, the reality is this realm is more of a testing ground for ideas the old ones have for the galaxy; How things should look, how what should influence what. Everything here gets tested, refined and then during the construction stages; gets implemented. As for why you're here and why we need new emissaries is because the big guy is about to wake up."
  20.
  21. Again more confusion, you aren't sure who he means by "the big guy", so you ask curisoity besting you.
  22.
  23. "His name is a bit hard to pronounce for humans, then again when you don't have a segmented jaw it would be," the man continues to explain. "Guess you'd call him Cthulu, or thats what we told Lovecraft to call him. We tried to get people before him to pronounce the big dude's name but it either drove them mad because they couldn't pronounce it right, or one dude manage to dislocate this jaw." The thing snorts in amusement as he recalls that last bit.
  24.
  25. "But wait, doesn't Cthulu's awakening signal the end of the world or something?" You ask, trying your best to recall what little of the mythos you know.
  26.
  27. "Well yes and no pal, Lovecraft took some...'liberties' with what happens." the thing says making air quotes as he says the word liberties. "Basically humanity's concept of gods is weird, you people listen to what you want to hear WAY too much. To put it in better terms, The big guy, Cthulu is basically a galaxy builder. His waking means the end of our meddling in this galaxy."
  28.
  29. "Who exactly is 'we'?" you ask, the thing giving more and more questions than answers.
  30.
  31. "To break it down so you don't end up deranged with the knowledge it goes like this; Imagine your galaxy like a stage, The big guy builds the stage itself, us elders start rough drafting the ideas for the various life that will inhabit the galaxy, the Titans shape the stars, the worlds and what have you, and finally the gods take a look at our rough drafts, pick the best ones and populate the stage with life. It's really one big construction project really." The thing in front of you stops it's explanation, brow furrowing. "hold on a bit, want something to drink? This is gonna take a bit of time to get through."
  32.
  33. You look over to Cassandra, her body shimmering in the strange light emitted from the 'sun' above, giving you a smile as a way to calm your nerves. "I guess an iced tea would be nice."
  34.
  35. As you finish your words you spy something just below your periphery vision. A large puddle of ooze forms on the ground, from it rises a simple wooden table on which a glass filled with brownish liquid sits. You look at the glass, tilting your head back and forth in a sort of 'should I?' motion as you think about it, again looking over to Cassandra whose simple smile and nod melt away any fears you had about the liquid. Cautiously you bring the glass to your lips, taking a tiny sip of it's contents, the taste easily recognizable.
  36.
  37. "Kid what was with those theatrics?" The thing asks, holding a mug filled with greenish liquid. "It's just iced tea, not acid or poo water."
  38.
  39. You laugh a bit at the last bit, sipping the iced tea again. The thing sitting in front of you takes a swig of his drink as well, before setting it down and continuing his story.
  40.
  41. "Anyways, once the gods populate the galaxy with what us elders design They kinda hang around, we had SOME liaisons throughout the years. Demi-gods we create, send to the mortal planes and just see what happens." The being stops, rubbing the 'bridge' of his 'nose'. "Right, trying to remember the names of liaisons you might know... There was Zeus' pick, Hercules. Then You had Yahweh, who had Jesus as his runner, that went sour."
  42.
  43. You go to open your mouth, a question forming on your lips. However, as you try to speak the being catches you, as if reading your mind.
  44. "Right we're strapped for time and I don't want this to be like Rip van Winkle again where I play twenty-thousand questions with the guy while he sleeps. To sum it up, human understanding of the gods is a bit odd, especially Yahweh, you modern mortals treat him like the end all be all, reality is he's more of a mix between what you'd call a manager and secretary for Zeus and the others when it comes to implementations. Actually it was his instance that things like dragons and mythical beasts be culled, most of them were too strong, especially the Hydra...No idea what Actaeon was thinking with that one." The being's tone changes to one of mocking "'Oh just make it sprout more heads as you cut it them off'. He was off his rocker with that one, how do you kill something like that? Even Ares agreed that crap was over kill."
  45.
  46. The being paused, realizing he had gone off track, again pinching the bridge of his nose in a attempt to collect his thoughts. "Where was I? See what I mean kid, too much stuff to explain, would better if it was all written down somewhere. The problem is, at least with humans, is your kind has a nasty habit of interpreting things differently from how they are written down. To get back to your question though and to wrap this up before we overshoot and miss the window to send you back to your body. Our job in your galaxy is pretty much almost done, all that's left is to make an appearance, answer some questions, bow and then move onto the next project."
  47.
  48. "Again, why me exactly?" You ask, still rather perplexed, none of what the being in front of you making any sense.
  49.
  50. "Well for a few reasons, you've got a penchant for mischief, the one the Norse called Loki likes people like that, so he and a few of the more chaos oriented gods already threw their votes in with you. Second one that comes to mind is that what we plan to give to humans as our farewell gift is something your mind seems to already understand the concept of, The Shoggoth are one of the first races we elders made, though the prototypes rebelled and that went as well as you'd expect."
  51.
  52. Your face scrunches, again more cryptic clues from the being. If it wasn't for the uncertainty of how you got here, you would have already left.
  53.
  54. "You look confused, so I'll just hack it down further; We plan on giving humans mamamo as our last gift, we've tested it here and no real ill effects, might take humans some getting used to. I mean the prototype Shoggoth had a nasty habit of absorbing their husbands into them. That little...'feature' got cut pretty quickly from them." the being says with a cough before finally settling on the word feature.
  55.
  56. "Cassandra is a field test and it seems to work in all honesty and my mates agree." The being says.
  57.
  58. Your face turns red at this mention, the thought of those moments of you and your loving Shoggoth wife having intimate sex while being watched by beings from a higher plane. The being, sensing your embarrassment chides in.
  59.
  60. "For the record kid, your embarrassment is rather within reason, Aside from one of my mates who seems to horde those recordings and uses them as smut. Typically we just keep an eye on you two to make sure something doesn't happen to you specifically, or her."
  61.
  62. The being trails off, looking up and into the distance, following his gaze you see nothing. However his brow furrows as a unpleasant look crosses his face before returning his gaze towards you.
  63.
  64. "Alright kid, we've gotta wrap this up. I'm going to leave a quick refence book with Cassandra, and if you REALLY want to know more just bum through it. We're running out of time here so I'm just gonna get someone to slap your unconcious mind back into your body so you can wake up properly."
  65.
  66. Again more black ooze materialized on the ground, taking the shape of a rather crooked door frame with equally warped door. The being's cheeks puff out in a tinge of frustration upon seeing it.
  67.
  68. "This is why we need a new testing bed, the energies here are a bit too much, things don't even form right anymore, it's even a surprise your Iced tea didn't contain something like cat piss or something... I'll have to lobby for a new test dimension. Well what are you waiting for? Just step through the door and you'll awake in bed, it's that simple really."
  69.
  70. You approach the strange door, part of you erring in caution as you grip the knob and pull it open. Inside lays inky blackness, yet is strangely welcoming. As you turn around to ask for a second Opinion, both Cassandra and the being are gone, leaving you alone at the entrance to the unknown before you. With a mindset of nothing ventured, nothing gained, you walk through the door, the unlit area beyond it enveloping you as you step through. For what seems like ages you stand there in the darkness, unsure of what to do. Had the being lied to you? He did say it would be rather instant, however it didn't feel like it. As you ponder questions that would go unanswered a light appears over the horizon, dim at first before blinding you.
  71.
  72. You wake up, turning your head you find yourself in bed. As you sit up you wonder if what you experienced was a dream, that the events was just something fueled by the strange dinner you ate last night. However as you try and logic through the situation something catches your attention from the corner of your eye, a book on the nightstand. The book itself is rather large, it's cover made of what looks like leather with gold lettering on the cover that simply reads:
  73.
  74. "Questions you might have"
  75. Below the title is simply two letters 'R.D.', it takes you a moment to realize that what had transpired during the night was anything but a dream.
