Installing TCP/IP in Windows 95 (1026518)

Symptoms

In a Windows 95 virtual machine, you experience these symptoms:

  • You cannot get a network connection
  • You cannot run ping
  • You cannot run winipcfg
  • There is no Internet access
  • The virtual machine does not have an IP address

Resolution

This issue occurs because TCP/IP is not installed on the Windows 95 virtual machine. To have access to the modern networks or Internet, TCP/IP must be installed in Windows 95.

To install TCP/IP:

  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  • Double-click Network.
  • Click Add.
  • Click Protocol and click Add.
  • Under Manufacturers, click Microsoft.
  • Under Network Protocols, click TCP/IP.
  • Click OK.

If prompted, insert your Windows 95 CD or attach a Windows 95 ISO.
When the installation completes, click OK to exit Network setup.
When prompted, click Yes to reboot the system.
After the system reboots, run the winipcfg command from the MS-DOS prompt and confirm that the virtual machine has an IP address.
