  4. Chapter 4: Show me your war face!
  5.
  6. >The sky is bright, dispute the pitch darkness.
  7. >The silver stone that floats above bathes the air with its luminescence, accompanied by the shining glitter of its nightly partners of astrological guidance.
  8. >You and Fluttershy still hung back a distance from the others, playing catch up.
  9. >Gazing up at the sky as you talked, pointing out the occasional shooting star.
  10. >You might expect those things to be leas likely to appear, but given they're being controlled by someone, you suppose that isn't necessarily so.
  11. >Then again, they could just be having a good day.
  12. >You haven't spoken to Luna for a while, or rather, sent her a letter.
  13. >Have been exchanging letters since your first meeting.
  14. >Well technically you haven't, but considering the circumstances at the time, you don't really count that.
  15. >But the story of your arrival in Equestria is one for another time, possibly when it proves relevant.
  16. >The two of you started out your little back and forth with comparison of the difference between the astrology of your worlds.
  17. >She found a fascination in the fact that your moon revolved around your homeworld without any outside assistance other than the planets gravitational hold, as did Celestial with the relation to the sun, though not as enthused.
  18. >Celestia seems like she's seen it all.
  19. >Well she probably has.
  20. >Both of them actually. As far as you know, they're both over a thousand years old.
  21. Older when you consider discords banishment being longer than that, and them ruling since then, before Luna's own eventual banishment.
  22. >But you digress.
  23.
  24. >You and Fluttershy reminisced about the good times, and all the goofy adventures you went on.
  25. >Or rather, all the adventures you were adamant to partake in this New World you'd found yourself in, her tagging along only in worry for your safety.
  26. >Since you were a kid, growing up with Disney being your main eye for cartoon and movie entertainment, you always found yourself drawn to the mystical and fantasy.
  27. >Poor Fluttershy endangering herself over your more or less misguided thirst for expedition and exploration.
  28. >You also talked about her wedding.
  29. >Apparently it's been postponed.
  30. >heh, poned
  31. >Anyway, apparently she really wanted you to be there.
  32. >Everyone did, and were hoping you would return in time.
  33. >Though, probably not as much as Fluttershy.
  34. >Despite your feelings toward her, she still cares for you as though you were her little brother, and wants nothing more than her adopted kin to attend her (first; ships ships fedora) wedding.
  35. >That made you feel terrible.
  36. >Even more so when you found out even waifu-thief himself, Thunderlane, wanted you to be there.
  37. >Turns how he was the one who sent the invitation
  38. >He's wanted to talk to you ever since he and Fluttershy started seeing each other.
  39. >But you kind of just... shut him out.
  40. >You did sort of give him the cold shoulder for the duration, but what can ya do.
  41. >You felt both heartbroken and betrayed, but now you're passed that.
  42. >If you saw him again you'd totally give him a congratulatory brofist, 'cause you're totally cool with it.
  43. >... right?
  44.
  45. >Anyway, you finished the conversation telling Fluttershy to have her wedding, even if you're not there.
  46. >Of course she begged you to come, even saying it would mean so much to Flash.
  47. >Thunderlane
  48. >You ment Thunderlane.
  49. >But you told her you weren't ready to leave Zebrica just yet, that you'd try to get there in time, but it's not a sure thing.
  50. >After another years worth of pleading, she finally conceeded.
  51. >Which brings you to now, dog tired at probably 4am, trundling in an apparently random direction, without any breaks, still following a hyena carrying a sleepomg chimp and mongoose on her back.
  52. >Fluttershy had long since fallen asleep, tucked snug and safe in your pack, which you now carry over your shoulder.
  53. >On your back.
  54. >Whatever, E in English.
  55. >I'm using a phone right now.
  56. "Gruh..."
  57. >You groan in exhaustion.
  58. "How much longer..."
  59. >"Quit wining!" she grunts out. You can tell she's tired too, but she's trying to hide it in an obvious way, occasionally slowing to catch herself.
  60. "Ya know, you shouldn't push yourself, you were literally starving to death just over twenty hours ago."
  61. >"Pa-lease," she huffs, "This is... nothing." She's nothing if not prideful.
  62. >Wait a minute, you're remembering somerhing.
  63. >You were over a hundred miles away from Zebrabwe before you met Dikeledi.
  64. >And if you're assumption is correct, you're detour and subsequent chase through the jungle probably threw you of course a few miles, the only source of conveniently on point (badum-tss) directioning supposedly sending you on a straight path to your destination.
  65. >But if your math is accurate, with the average human walking with natural amount of energy input is 3-4 miles per hour, then...
  66. "Are you sure we'all get there by breakfast?"
  67.
  68. >"W-well, the last... time I went there there, it didn't take as long as it's taking now. But then again, I didn't have as much dead weight." she says, looking behind her at the rest of you.
  69. "Well, I'm sorry for making you do this for me."
  70. >She looks at you for a hint of sarcasm, but finds nothing in your expression that tells.
  71. >Nailed it
  72. >She sighs, "It's... It's alright, I guess. I mean... I do owe you for... saving my life and all."
  73. >Damn right she does, but you're not holding it against her.
  74. "Look, we should stop, get some rest. We both need it."
  75. >You say, barely able to even keep your eyes open.
  76. >"Whats... wrong. Aren't you supposed to be an adventurer?" she quips.
  77. "Even an adventurer needs sleep."
  78. >"Psh, Sleep is for the weak. And mama didn't raise no weakling." she declares, before promptly collapsing into a heap on the ground, her two passengers undisturbed by the sudden contact with solid the grass laden floor. "Maybe... a little shuteye would do some good."
  79. >She limply curls into a comfortable position, sleep quickly taking her.
  80. "Finally..."
  81. >You kneel down and gently remove your bag of Fluttershy, placing it softly to the ground as not to disturb your fragile cargo, unlike some people.
  82. >You sigh and lie back, resting your head against your pack.
  83. >It's thick enough that you don't push too much into Fluttershy with the contact.
  84. >Sleep takes you with ease under the cool air of the Zebrican night.
  85.
  86. ~
  87.
  88. >You're awoken by the sound of shifting grass and soft whimpers.
  89. >You're a bit groggy and irritated.
  90. >You probably only got a couple minutes of sleep.
  91. >You search for the cause of your dismay, and find something unexpected.
  92. >Dikeledi is kicking around her little doglegs in her sleep.
  93. >Permission to d'aw audibly sir?
  94. >Permission granted brain.
  95. "D'awww...."
  96. >You active creep mode, and drag your weird ass over to her unconscious form.
  97. >D'aww, she's probably dreaming about running through the jungle again.
  98. >Maybe even swimming in a river.
  99. >"N-no... D-don't..." she murmers, barely audible even in the darkness of night.
  100. >Well.
  101. >That doesn't sound like a nice prance through the gusty savanna.
  102. >"P-please... stop..."
  103. >Your brows furrow in concern, it's probably just sum nightmare.
  104. >Maybe the shock from almost dying is finally hitting her... but in her sleep.
  105. >That happens right?
  106. >You're not sure if you should wake her or not, you've heard things about waking people up when they're having night mares.
  107. >Plus she has like, razor sharp teeth made for ripping flesh and crushing bone.
  108. >You wouldn't be surprised if the thought you were... whatever she's dreaming about and lashes out at you in the dark.
  109. >It's probably nothing.
  110.
  111. >You are Dikeledi
  112. >You are running, and you cannot stop.
  113. >Your being chased, chased across the savanna by a pack of other hyenas.
  114. >Your own kin
  115. >Jaws snapping to either side of you as they try to catch you.
  116. >You buck your hips to the side, knocking one in the face, but losing your balance in the process.
  117. >You trip and fall, tabling a few feet as the pack closes in and surrounds you.
  118. >They're toothy grins and wild cackling becoming more and more frightening as they all collect around you, blocking any route of escape.
  119. >"Oh, Dikeledi, why must you run? You know you could never get too far from me..." sounds a cold yet almost melodic voice from outside of the ring opposite you.
  120. >"But then again, I do love a good chase," says the voice, the owner appearing, breaking through the the gap the pack opened, just to let her through.
  121. >She looms over you, her hot breath blowing into your face as she stands, jaw ajar, as if ready to give the final blow
  122. "Just... do it already..." you say, accepting defeat.
  123. >"I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean..." the newcomer responds sadistically
  124. >"Just end it already!" you shout out, tears forming at the corner of your eyes. "Put me out of my misery..."
  125. >There is a pause.
  126. >Then, laughter. Not a hearty one, but laughter that sends a chill down your battered form.
  127. >"Oh, no," they say, "to do so now would not really be satisfying, even though all it would take is one," she pauses between words, "Swift." her hot breath on your neck makes you flinch. "Bite!" she accents that last word by snapping her jaw.
  128.
  129. >You quiver under your assailant, awaiting a finishing blow that never comes.
  130. >"But how could a do such a thing to my own little sister?" she says in a baby-talk voice.
  131. >You'd feel embarrassed if you weren't lying pool of blood, covered in scratches and bite marks, surrounded by the threatening forms of your former friends and family.
  132. "J-just d-do it, Thema..."
  133. >You plead.
  134. >"D'aw" the sarcastically remarks, "looks like little DeeDee's getting Impatient again." Everyone else cackles in response.
  135. >You'd curse if you had the energy for it, but you just lie there wishing she would just stop drawing it out.
  136. >"Don't you worry, I'll give you what you want... in time. But for now, I'll leave you to your own devices. Build up you strength, Deedee, I would wish for you to be able to put up a proper fight next time." she says, turning around, but not yet leaving.
  137. >"Oh, and one more thing," she looks back at you dead in the eye. "That little zebra colt, what was his name?"
  138. >She didn't.
  139. >"I believe his last words were, 'My father was right about her.'" You feel a pit in your already empty stomach. "He said something else in that Rhymey way zebras usually speak, but I couldn't help myself." she chuckles. "Though, his words we're in good... taste." she says, licking her teeth as she does. "You did always bring trouble where ever you went didn't you."
  140. >Her sadistic laugh fills the air as she departs.
  141. >"Tata, dear sister. Do well for yourself, because next time we see each other," that grin doesn't leave her face even as she breaches the gap once more, "will be the last."
  142. >And with that, she and the rest of the pack are gone.
  143. >Once they're far away, you begin bawling.
  144. >Helpless, defeated, broken and left for dead.
  145. >You're alone, with no one to help you.
  146. >But you suppose you don't need anyone, not anymore.
  147. >You can take care of yourself.
  148. >Mama didn't raise no weakling.
  149.
  150. *
  151.
  152. >The following sun-up, you awaken to a prodding sensation in the small love your back.
  153. "Mmh... Chappy quit it..."
  154. >You shift around trying to squirm the feeling off.
  155. >It moves a bit, but is now poking at your waist.
  156. >You feel something like an arm halfway across your sides.
  157. >You realise Chappy isn't big enough to accomplish such a feat.
  158. "M-Minka... is that you poking me with a stick again?"
  159. >The chimp in question giggles out her response, "That's *snicker* that's not me, anon."
  160. >A soft "oh my" can be heard in the background, so that rules her out as well.
  161. >You take a moment to think about it.
  162. >What the fuck could be poking you in the back right now.
  163. >Who could possibly have the means to-
  164. >Your thoughts are interrupted by a yawn coming from right behind you, answering your question.
  165. >So the thing behind you is your new friend.
  166. >And apparently they're spooning you.
  167. >But if she's spooning you, then that would mean the thing poking you into the back is...
  168. >Oh
  169. >OH.
  170. >Ooooh
  171. >Oh God.
  172. >OH GOD
  173. >The realization has you frozen in fear, you're reluctant to confirm your assumption.
  174. >Fortunately you don't have to, as the big spoon begins to stir.
  175.
  176. >"*yawn* shutuh fuhk up alredy. pplz is tryina slee - *haaaah* eep..." sounds an irritated voice.
  177. >She snuggles into your back, stretching her arm further, her... thing rubbing against your thigh now. "Mmh... so soft..."
  178. >Moments tick by, no one moving an inch.
  179. >You're sweating now, both because of the hot sun glaring down on your exposed form, and from the stress of your current situation.
  180. >You want to move, try to slither away, hpoing she wouldn't notice.
  181. >But you're body is too tensed up.
  182. >You can't move a muscle.
  183. >Your little struggle to struggle is put on hold when you hear "Wait..."
  184. >Here it comes
  185. >"What is..."
  186. >You feel it move again.
  187. >This feels too wrong, and you're scared shitless.
  188. >Last thing you remember was hovering a hand over the quivering form of Dikeledi, debating whether or not you should wake her up or let whatever it was pass.
  189. >Now you're huddled up in the grass with hyena pseudo-D rubbing against your leg.
  190. >And that's not the scary part.
  191. >Any moment now you're gonna have a few new holes to-
  192. >Did she just sigh?
  193. >She- she just sighed didn't she.
  194. >You mean, you're glad you didn't get your head chomped off, but you were expecting at least a nip
  195. >She rolls off to the side, leaving your back exposed to the light breeze blowing through the field.
  196. >You just lie there
  197. >You weren't expecting that.
  198. >You turn your head to see Dikeledi stretching her legs out while everyone else watches with mixed expressions.
  199. >Minka and Chappy look disappointed with this turn of events, maybe for different reasons.
  200. >You can figure out why either would be.
  201. >Fluttershy... looks like she's recovering from a slight wing boner.
  202. >You're body is confused right now.
  203. >You're not sure whether you should blush, or shiver.
  204. >Dikeledi finishes her stretching and looks around at the rest of you.
  205. >"What are y'all looking at?" she barks out.
  206. >Her eyes scan for any reactions, finally locking with yours.
  207. >You gulp inaudibly.
  208.
  209. >The gaze between you two holds for a while before you realize what she's doing.
  210. >You've seen this type of thing before.
  211. >On TV during one of those animal encounter moments in sitcoms, movies, cartoons, NATGEO, NATGEO Wild, NATGEO Mundo, etc.
  212. >It's one of the fiercest battles in the animal kingdom, the battle of wills.
  213. >You're fear turns into determination.
  214. >You won't let this bitch stare you down, you won't go down like that.
  215. >You slowly right yourself, all the while not breaking the eye contact, shifting to a more comfortable position, relatively speaking.
  216. >You're on a hard ass grass floor in a desert hot savanna in fucking pony Africa.
  217. >This goes on for a while, they levels of intensity rising all the while.
  218. >Maybe it's only been a minute, but it feels like an hour as the two of you are locked in an intense stared down, both putting up a thick wall of defiance, equally adimant in never backing down.
  219. >You're audience watches on with baited breath, not sure of the outcome of this match of emotion.
  220. >Completely on edge, pondering over the victor.
  221. >Would it be you, Anon Y. Mous, The wistful and blissful, clever and cunning, masterful and resourceful with plentiful charisma.
  222. >Or would it be Dikeledi, the brash yet bold, frightening yet favorable, abrasive yet admirable, hard but determined, hardend by experience.
  223. >"Five silver nanas on the Hyena." Minka states.
  224. >Chappy chirps in recognition.
  225. >TRATORS
  226. >"W-well. D-don't worry anon. I'm on your side!"
  227. >Oh, Fluttershy, bless her heart.
  228. >At least she believes in you, and with her on your side, you feel that much more confident.
  229. >Faintly, you hear "uh... how much is the rate of nanas to bits..."
  230. >Fucking Fluttershy.
  231.
  232. >Well, there goes that confidence boost.
  233. >You channel the force of your glare, turning it onto a field of aggression, attempting to will your will into the wills of the willing willingly watching your wills collide.
  234. >You look around in your peripherals for any reaction.
  235. >Fluttershy Sneezes.
  236. >Success!
  237. >She rubs her nose, "Oh, hello there little guy. It's dangerous for you to be climbing on to ponies like that. Ooh, what a beautiful exoskeleton you have. All those colors....." goddammit.
  238. >You tune her out and focus on the task at hand.
  239. >And so the battle continues.
  240. >Dikeledi squints her eyes, and the blow is effective as you hesitate for a moment.
  241. >A bead of sweat begins falls just to the side of your brow.
  242. >She notices this and intensifies her efforts.
  243. >You're not used to this, you've never done this before.
  244. >Sure, you've had some bullies trying to fear you into doing whatever, or making threats and attempts against your person.
  245. >But you always stood your ground, never putting up with any of your shit.
  246. >Earned you a few scars and bruises, but hey, you're not just let shit happen like that.
  247. >This time is different though.
  248. >You're staring down an actual predator, built for the kill.
  249. >Fully capable of tearing you apart with powerful jaws and razor sharp claws, should she be upset at losing in a simple stare down.
  250. >This thought makes you hesitate even more, making her smirk.
  251. >Shit, stop giving her the edge.
  252. >Anon uses leer. Dikeledi is unphased.
  253. >Dikeledi uses mean look. Critical hit.
  254. >You're sweating bullets now, and her smirk only grows.
  255. >You can't lose, not like this, you have to pull out all the stops.
  256. >With all the energy you can muster, you strain your face to make the most terrifying glare you can, attempting to create a face that would turn medusa to stone.
  257. >Instead you just look constipated.
  258. >Seems like its working, she's tearing up.
  259.
  260. >Her cheeks puff out as she tries to maintain her composure.
  261. >She keeps glaring as hard as she can, but it is an obvious struggle as she begins to shake.
  262. >You have no idea how you're doing this, but you're winning.
  263. >You're face hurts like fuck, but you're winning.
  264. >Maybe you should file this in for a later date, in case you run into any other dangerous predators and need to scare or at least stun them.
  265. B: Don't hold your breath, Anon.
  266. >Shut up brain, focus on the fight.
  267. >You continue to strain your face, oblivious to the reactions of the audience.
  268. >Too invested in the bout to take notice of your surroundings.
  269. >You're opponent seems to be losing herself, squinting tighter and tighter trying not to break.
  270. >scrunchfaceintensifes.gif
  271. >She loses it.
  272. >She fucking loses it.
  273. >She's laughing her ass off, rolling around on the ground cackling wildly.
  274. >Her tears now flowing openly.
  275. >Success! Again! For real this time!
  276. >Wait, why is she laughing?
  277. >You look around and see that the audience has also engaged in a little gathering of guffaws.
  278. "Whats so funny?"
  279. >"Heheh, haha, Nonny... Y-your. Your face. It's... it's... AHAHAHAH *screech*!" replies Minka, screeching out her laughter.
  280. "What? What's wrong with my face."
  281. >"Y-you look... You look... I mean, it's not that..." even Fluttershy can't contain herself.
  282. >You're not sure what's so funny.
  283. >You look around at everyone laughing at you, becoming more than a little flustered.
  284. "WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY FACE!?"
