  1. The forester he had a long quarter-staff,
  2. Likewise a broad sword by his side;
  3. Without more ado, he presently drew,
  4. Declaring the truth should be try’d.
  5. Bold Robin Hood had a sword of the best,
  6. Thus, eer he would take any wrong,
  7. His courage was flush, he’d venture a brush,
  8. And thus they fell to it ding dong.
  9. The very first blow that the forester gave,
  10. He made his broad weapon cry twang;
  11. ’Twas over the head, he fell down for dead,
  12. O that was a damnable bang!
  13. But Robin soon did recover himself,
  14. And bravely fell to it again;
  15. The very next stroke their weapons were broke,
  16. Yet never a man there was slain.
