  10. NAME: Yang Sumi
  11. NICKNAME(S): Mi,Mini, Honeybee
  12. BIRTHDATE: April 16, 1997
  13.
  14. BIRTHPLACE: Sillim, South Korea
  15. HOMETOWN: Andong, South Korea
  16. LANGUAGE: Korean
  17.
  18. BACKGROUND/FAMILY:
  19.
  20. Sumi was born to 2 university students who were not in any way prepared to have a child. Her mother was notorious for skipping classes and partying until dawn while maintaining the grades expected of a full-ride scholarship student. Nobody knew how she did it. Her father was an equally bright country boy who was much more diligent in his attendance and schoolwork, likely because his family had scraped together several lifetimes worth of savings to get him where he was. The polarity of their personalities was as clear as her mother’s alcohol dependency, but by some supernatural power, they became friends. She learned how to rely on others and he learned to take a break. The only time she ever dragged him to a party, they both drank more than they could handle and unspoken feelings were expressed in the most drastic way. And then Sumi was on the way. Neither were close to being done with their undergrads, being only 19 at the time, nor were they willing to halt their education to raise a child. The only thing they could think to do was to give her to their parents, if they put her up for adoption they’d never know her. Her mother’s parents were out of the question, so she went to live with her paternal grandparents. They ran a small hostel outside of the Folk Village where Sumi later grew up working.
  21.
  22. Sumi rarely saw her mother. The trip to Andong from Sillim was long and she wasn’t really all that interested. Their interactions were brief and uncomfortable, “are you doing well in school?” “don’t give your grandparents a hard time” “how old are you now 6? 7? Oh, you don’t look 11.” to the point Sumi wished they didn’t have them at all. Her father tried to keep in touch, but with breaking up with her mother and working a demanding full time job, they only met on holidays and he was incredibly depressed. It wasn’t until she was 12, that they truly got close. It was under a terrible circumstance, but the payoff was worth it. Her father had to move back home after making an attempt on his life. Her grandparents thought it best to keep him close at home to rehabilitate.
  23.
  24. Sumi until this point was quiet and hardly spoke, she was the girl at school who didn’t bring anyone to the Father’s Day breakfasts at school and had to ask the teacher separately how to write grandma so she could put it on the Mother’s Day cards they made in class. When they were told to describe their mothers Sumi didn’t know what to put. She had her friends and they were incredibly good to her, but there were others that couldn’t keep their thoughts inside their heads. If she ranked well at the end of the year it was because her whore mother slept with the teacher, if she got a solo for the choir concert, it was because the teachers felt bad for the girl whose parents didn’t like her enough to stay. That’s what broke her the most, she wasn’t good enough to make anyone stay. As much as she avoided conflict and kept her head down, the few bad apples would weed her out and drag her through the mud. It would plague her whenever she had the time to think, like those words were the first and only she’d ever heard. Nobody loved her enough to stay. And then her dad came back. And he stayed. And they talked so much and he made her smile and she made him smile and it was like he’d never not been there. For 3 whole years they caught up and did the things that they should’ve. He took her to the daddy-daughter dances and they snuck candy past her grandmother and they sprayed each other with hoses; part of what she felt was missing had put itself back into place. And when either one of them was feeling down, they’d sing to each other because it was the first thing they’d ever bonded over.
  25.
  26. An afternoon after a classmate had said something particularly nasty, Sumi sought out her father so he could sing her into a happier place. But he lay in bed unmoving. Chest still, her grandfather’s pillbox empty, 3 letters in a hand and a smile on his face. Sumi shut down after that. All the progress she’d made, all the progress he’d made, reversed in an instant. She stopped attending dance classes, barely ate, she fell behind in school. Her grandmother, bless her heart, tried to care for her through the grieving, but nothing could get through to her. Sumi was a hollow shell of the happier girl she was becoming. She hardly moved. At night she clutched her letter to her chest as she slept, but couldn’t bring herself to open it. Why should she? She couldn’t make him stay.
  27.
  28. Recovery was hard, the journey was much too long. Somewhere along the way she finally broke the seal of the envelope wrinkled from tight grips and dried tears. She read the chicken scratch that she grew to know was her father’s handwriting. He wanted her to be happy. To sing and dance and remember him. He was sorry, but he was glad he got to know her. It wasn’t her fault. He was always going to be proud of her. As long as she did what she loved she would be okay. So she packed up her things and said her goodbyes. She thanked her grandparents for being the kindest people in her life and then she bought a ticket and made the journey to Seoul that her mother never wanted to make. Sumi busked for months before she was scouted. She prayed every night that she would make it, she refused to complain during training because she wanted to become someone that made others want to stay. And she eventually did.
  29.
  30. PERSONALITY:
  31.
  32. Sumi is a suffer-in-silence individual. She doesn’t verbally express herself well because of how easily she allows herself to get overwhelmed. Negative words and thoughts can easily be her one hit KO, but she won’t hit the floor until the door closes behind her. To let other people know that she was having a hard time was to show that she isn’t capable. She’s completely convinced of the fact that she isn’t, but that doesn’t mean she wants others to know that. She’d much rather project that she’s practically perfect in every way so that hopefully people will care about her more.
  33.
  34. Sumi is well-mannered and keeps her opinions to herself. If she needs to vent, she’ll turn to her notebook or sketchbook. Her deepest thoughts would rather be sealed between pages than be spoken aloud. How would it change the way people viewed her if they knew of the envy that she held for her dearest friends? She wants to be outspoken, she wants to be showered with love. But it just doesn’t ever seem to work that way. Sumi knows that because her group is vocally focused, she doesn’t get to display her talent as a dancer as much. Everyone else gets to stand out in their own way, while she feels lost in the dust. Even if they’re equally matched in skill, Sumi just doesn’t get the same amount of attention.
  35.
  36. She doesn’t know what they have that she doesn’t that makes them more appealing to the public eye, but she’d kill to have it. Her jealousy shouldn’t be confused for hatred, she loves her members deeply and hasn’t had any friends that support her the way they do, she just wishes she was more like them. Sumi knows that she’s good at what she does, she just hates that it’s not good enough. No matter how many times she’s told that she’s worth it, she can’t bring herself to believe anything other than the negativity she hears. She wishes she had a stronger resolve and was able to combat hate comments with genuine words of self-assurance, but at the end of the day, she’s too scared of stepping out of the box that she built for herself.

  65. STEP TWO
  66.
  67. LOVE INTEREST: Ten - NCT
  68.
  69. HOW THEY MET:
  70.
  71. Sumi and Ten met while emceeing for Inkigayo. She was surprisingly calm that day, having actually gotten a full night’s rest. Ten on the other hand was wired. He didn’t normally get nervous for these things, but with it being his first time emceeing like this, having just finished promotions for his latest comeback, and getting caught in traffic on the way there, he was just slightly (read: very) frazzled. And while Sumi may be introverted to a degree, she is empathetic enough to realize when others aren’t at their 100%. She pulled him aside during one of their breaks and tried her best to give him words of encouragement. The entire time, she was beating herself up because he was technically older than her, and even if she was his senior in the industry she didn’t want to come off as rude. And he was really attractive so that didn’t help.
  72.
  73. He did really appreciate her efforts to help him out and the rest of the event went a lot smoother. Their relationship originally started as him wanting to thank her and to celebrate the filming success, but they both realized that they enjoyed the other’s company and wanted to see more of each other. They bonded over their love for dance and chocolate cake and quickly became close. They can’t place a date on when they finally got together, things simply intensified with time without them really placing labels on things. At least not until things were really serious.
  74.
  75. RELATIONSHIP:
  76.
  77. Sumi loves him. She really does. She pours her heart into maintaining the love they’ve shared for almost 3 years. He just doesn’t seem to realize it. More and more it’s felt like he keeps her around as a stress reliever. He only displays love to her when he wants something and knows how to play his cards just right against her. Threats of leaving her and strategic mention of her inability to keep her father alive are just enough to shock her back into bending over backwards to his desires. He’s ingrained the idea that she’s average at best and, if he wanted, he could leave her for another woman. She knows that it isn’t right. That if he really loved her he wouldn’t use his presence as a bargaining chip. But he’s the first person in a long time that makes her feel like she can be important. She doesn’t want to lose that. So even if their relationship feels purely physical on his end, even if she is the only one that sends goodnight texts or congratulations after wins, she will keep loving him. He will keep using her.
  78.
  79. TRIVIA:
  80. He won her a stuffed animal Totoro that she sleeps with every night
  81. In the early stages of their relationship, he encouraged her to get her first tattoos
  82. He’s only ever hit her once, she promises that if he does it again she’ll leave (but every time he gets close, she finds that she isn’t ready to go)
  83. Sometimes she makes him speak to her in English, Thai, or Mandarin so that she can practice her comprehension
  84. He buys her flowers as apologies because he knows how much she loves gardening
  85. She sends him dance practice videos for a second opinion and critique
  86. He tells her often that he could leave her for Red Velvet’s Seulgi and she now can’t listen to their music without getting mad or crying
  87. She hates having long nails but he always tells her to get long gel nails done
