  13.
  14. She sits in a red-yellow knot, scales folded against scales, her long body coiled intricately upon itself. She lifts one head, then another: one is hers, the other, manticore-like, is her lover's. A serthis, pale yellow against her ruddy complexion, his name is not so unlike the noise he makes upon being awoken too early in the day: Hisk.
  15.
  16. Charis met Hisk when they both yet lived in the Wasteland. The daughter of a powerful devotee of the Plaguebringer, Charis was of course made ready from the earliest to be exalted and serve her god. She was willing, too -- until she met Hisk. If not for his obviously non-dragon form, she would have mistaken him for a Plague dragon: fierce, resilient, impassioned. Like her. The time she would have spent training for the day of her exaltation was soon split between her religious duties and meeting with Hisk. In time, she grew to discover one thing more about herself: She was in love with Hisk. It became readily apparent that he loved her in return.
  17.
  18. When her time came, Charis slipped quietly away from her clan, met Hisk one final time in secret, and traveled with him as far as they could. They found Elisheba's clan, and with it, succor. Charis' strength and passionate nature made her an ideal addition to the clan, and Hisk's expert knowledge in potion- and poison-crafting have been a boon to Elisheba's regime. Most importantly of all, of course, is that the two may remain together, separated neither by culture nor distance.
