Chara's History

Chara had a rather mundane life on the surface. They were bullied for their abnormally colored red eyes and even called a "demon" by some of their town's more superstitious elders but they ignored that for the most part. Their reason for falling Underground was due to being tricked by some of the other children. They were told that if they climbed to the peak of Mt. Ebott, a mountain from which people were said to never return, and returned alive, they would stop bullying them. Quite desperate to be accepted, they agreed and climbed the mountain. They found the hole and they tripped and fell in headfirst.

They hurt their head upon landing and weakly called out for help, not expecting any but still, calling out of instinct. To their surprise a voice answered them and before they lost consciousness they heard the voice say "Oh, you've fallen down, haven't you? here, get up." and help them up. They groggily said their name was Chara and heard their savior say  "That's a nice name. My name is..." before they blacked out.

The next thing they know, they were waking up in a strange room. and were told that they were in the underground Kingdom of Monsters and unfortunately there was no way out as the only way out was blocked by a powerful magical barrier. They then learned their savior was Asriel, The Prince of the monsters and he had dragged them to his home after finding them in the Ruins.

The first few days were awkward, but before long Asriel and Chara became inseparable. They were seen to be like siblings to the rest of the monsters, Seeing this bond, gave the rest of the Underground hope that maybe humans weren't that bad.

It was after they made the mistakes of using buttercups in place of cups of butter when they tried to make a surprise for Asgore. The toxicity of the flowers made Asgore very ill.

For some reason, despite the mix-up, Chara found it funny what had happened. This sprouted the plan of how to free the monsters. The events play out much like canon Undertale with Chara ingested Buttercups so they would die, Asriel would absorb their soul and pass the barrier to collect just 6 more then return to break the barrier. But of course when the time came, Asriel couldn't bring himself to actually hurt them so knowing they had no other plan, Chara took control of their shared body and was ready to follow through. But, Asriel stopped them. he then struggled his way back home before collapsing in the garden and turning to dust. Both his and Chara's soul shattering. The remains were absorbs back into Chara's body which remained in the flowers.

Chara's body was taken with Toriel when she fled the castle and buried under the hole they had fallen in from. From that, a patch of golden flowers bloomed from seeds stuck on Chara's body. the years pass and Chara is only vaguely aware as others fall onto their grave. this changes when one day, as a child falls, Chara feels a lurching sensation and finds themselves connected to the child.

They find over time that the child can hear their thoughts on things and curious on what has changed, they share what they know about the Underground as the human makes their way along. The child doesn't hurt any monster and instead befriends them all much to their surprise. They are stunned when Flowey reveals that he is Asriel. After the barrier is broken and monsters go free, Chara finally learns the name of the human that had helped them, Frisk.

Frisk pulls some strings and convinces Alphys to find a way to separate Chara from them but Alphys admits the only thing she could try is the same thing that resulted in Asriel becoming Flowey. Chara confirms they would be fine with the experiment. It succeeds and Chara's consciousness is transferred into a Golden Flower. Afterwards, Alphys rigs up a small airplane like device for Chara and Asriel to get around with.
