- Down on the beach, the fifteen graduate students and several crewmen from the Hastur were startled by the sound of the explosion. They watched as billowing black smoke poured from the volcano. Soon gouts of fire began to flare up from the center of the crater.
- As they watched in awe and horror, something appeared at the top of the mountain. A gigantic black shape slowly rose up from the edge of the caldera. Silhouetted against the bright red flames and the glowing fountains of lava, the gargantuan figure emerged from the very heart of the volcano.
- A rumbling roar filled their ears, but it was not from the volcano.
- Shigeharu, a Japanese graduate student from Osaka, recognized the creature immediately.
- “It’s Godzilla!” he cried. “Quick, get back to the ship! That’s Godzilla emerging from the mountain!”
- As one, the men and women on the beach rushed toward the ramp of the research vessel.
- Towering over the beach, and blinking in the bright sunlight, Godzilla snorted and hissed angrily. Then, as his eyes became adjusted to the daylight he hadn’t seen in four years, Godzilla was attracted by the ship at anchor and the motion on the beach.
- The monster lifted his mighty reptilian head and opened his mighty jaws. With a bestial roar that froze the hearts of those who heard it, the King of the Monsters crashed through the side of the erupting mountain.
- Smashing through the avalanche of rocks, earth, and gushing lava, Godzilla howled again. His bell-like roar echoed across the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean.
