- Brown eyes.
- I remember dark nights with bedroom eyes.
- Pillow-talk, and the white lies.
- Lying beside at behest;
- comforting one another, head abreast
- Your eyes closed and breath steady
- wholly still and asleep already
- At night I'd contemplate oft
- when my heart was soft and thoughts aloft
- how apropos the title: sunflower
- the pedals bright and the corolla hazelnut
- in dark times and in rooms your light was like a shower
- as you too were like my sunflower-- but
- like our garden needs attending, so too did we
- neglectful when trees bending-- like bending my knee
- At stores now I'll see them all the same
- rows of sunflowers and I'm reminded of your name
- Some days I miss you.
- And buy a bundle or two
- I'd feed them 'till they were brown
- and with gloom and reluctance I put them away
- it's a soft whisper and a quite reminder
- that you couldn't stay.
- Your comfort now Shields you; like you did me
- much has changed, but I still believe
- you are but a sunflower
