>”Lulu, what happened?” Bed said as she stroked the hair of the younger but taller girl who was crying into her shoulder.
>The girl had flown over from her mother’s house and she only ever did that when she was really upset.

>Lulu stomped into the house and ran up the stairs with clodhopper footsteps.
>”No running in the house!” Lisa shouted after sticking her head into the hall. “These neutrinos- Lulu? Lulu!?”
>The mother soon followed the girl up the stairs.
>”Lulu, what is upsetting you? Can I come in?” Lisa says as she knocks on the door, plastered with caution and warning signs, which her daughter could not know how true some of them were.
>”F-fine!” Lulu yells through the door.
>”Tell me what happened, my progeny.” Lisa says as she sits on her daughter’s bed.
>Said daughter had launched herself underneath the pillows. So unnecessary, but she demanded it, ‘I don’t want to live in the crawl spaces and sleep in my web’. This was Lincoln’s fault.
>”These girls at school called me ugly and they’re right! I have to wear this stupid mask to cover up these horrible little arm things in my face-“
>”Maxillipeds.”
>”I spit acid when I’m angry.”
>”A perfectly natural defense mechanism for a young girl your age.”
>”No! It’s not! Stop acting like this is normal! I’m not fucking normal!” Lily shouts, burying her head into the pillows again. “Why did you do this to me?”
>”Oh, honey... I wouldn’t have gotten the research grant if I hadn’t made a few of your adaptations military-facing.”
>”What!?”
>”I almost didn’t get there either. They wanted a gestation of 3 months and a maturation of 2 years. I talked them into 9 months and 18 years. You can cram a lot of patriotism in 18 years of programming.”
>”What are you talking about!? I never-“ Lulu sits up and wells acid spit in her cheeks.
>Lisa hums the opening to the Star Spangled Banner and Lulu stands at attention.
> A couple of minutes later, after Lisa has sung the Star Spangled Banner twice, the pledge of allegiance, and this land is my land, she runs out of songs.
>”I’m a military project!” Lulu shouts when the humming ended.
>”Of course you are dear, military spending is through the roof and I saw it as a perfect opportunity to play some God.”
>She even got the military to agree it was a good idea to use her brother’s DNA to have more possible issues emerge in the recombination process, but Lulu didn’t know that.
>”I can’t believe you! What use does this have to do with the military?” Lulu says pointing to her maxi-whatevers.
>”More sensory organs around the mouth to lower poisoning potential, increase dexterity, and decrease resource usage.” Lisa lists off effortlessly.
>”And the spit?” Agains pointing to her face.
>”And again, increases availability of resources, lessens need for extractions, I can go on, Lulu.”
>”Don’t, I’m leaving.” Lulu rolls out of bed and onto her feet.
>”Where? Where are you going?”
>”Aunt Leni’s! She and Bed won’t treat me like a science experiment!” Lulu says as she shoves clothes into her backpack.
>”Lulu, don’t- don’t go! Kids are cruel, but it will be fine! You’re never going to have to serve. You’ll have a normal life.”
>”This isn’t normal!” Lulu says as she jumps out of the second story window, sprouting wings before hitting the ground.
>”That’s new.” Lisa mutters.
>”And this isn’t either!” Lulu shouts as she flies by.
