- We will NOT meet on Tuesday, November 8. Instead, we WILL meet on Wednesday, November 9.

- Integrated writing
- - 3 minutes to look at a 250-300-word text (about an academic topic)
- - 2-3 minutes to listen to a lecture about the same topic
- - 20 minutes to write about how the points from the lecture relate to the points from the reading
- ---
- Oxford p. 126 - Take 3 minutes to read the passage, then listen to a lecture on the same topic.
- ---
- The reading is about the harms of alcohol, and the lecture is about the benefits of moderate drinking.
- Reading points:
- 1 alcohol leads to weight gain
- 2 alcohol leads to more serious problems like heart disease and cirrhosis
- 3 alcohol has a negative impact on social behavior
- Listening points:
- 1 moderate alcohol reduces the risk of heart attack and strokes, reduces diabetes, and reduces the risk of dementia
- 2 alcohol corresponds to low body fat because it increases the metabolism
- 3 moderate alcohol improves social interactions
- ---
- point-by-point integrated response:
- - Introduction: describe the topic and summarize the position the reading and lecture have on the topic
- - First point: summarize the first point from the listening and explain how it relates to the corresponding point from the reading (usually it contradicts, challenges, or casts doubt on the point from the reading)
- (In this case, link it to “more serious health problems” or to heart disease and strokes, but you don’t need to mention cirrhosis, because the listening doesn’t say anything about that.)
- - Second point: (same thing - in this case it’s about fat and metabolism)
- - Third point: (same thing - about social interactions)
- ---
- block format:
- - Introduction is the same
- - Summarize all three points from the reading.
- - Summarize the points from the listening and explain how they relate to each of the points from the reading.
