Deca Durabolin is probably the 2nd most popular anabolic steroid in the fitness community after testosterone and its typically called 'Deca' so I will use that to describe it in this article.  The name deca is used because, typically, the decanoate ester is what is attached to what this compound really is, which is Nandrolone.   It is a long and stubborn ester and I have confirmed with my own bloodwork having run deca myself that it will stick around for 5-6 weeks after the last dosage.  I will go over the problems with this later on.  Also this compound is a horrific idea to use for those who may be tested in the future as it can be detected for up to 18 months!

Since deca recieved FDA approval in 1983, it has been used in the medical community for osteoporosis in older women; however, today it is rarely used for that purpose anymore.  Also, in some instances, aplastic anemia can be helped with deca.  So now you see why in the fitness community many believe deca is helpful for joints and bone health; however, in my opinion its benefits for this are a double edged sword.  If you do have bad joint problems deca may help the situation slightly in the short term, but, in the long run, there is a high probability that the problems can become worse, so use caution.  Another medical use is as a contraceptive and I will get into it shortly.

Deca has some unique properties, which differentiate it from other anabolic steroids.  For one, it is not broken down into DHT, so it is gentle on the hair and skin.  Instead, it is broken down to a much weaker androgen dihydronandrolone.   "Deca dick" is heard about on many fitness boards and the reason for this erectile dysfunction may be because of the weaker action dihydronandrolone in the penis since dihydrotestosterone is a known sexual modulator.   Since it's a progestin, which, as said earlier, is used as a contraceptive, it only makes sense that lower sexual arousal would occur.  Another danger is, since we have both progesterone and estrogen receptors in our breast tissues, deca makes you susceptible to both which is why so many fall victim to gynecomastia (gyno, bitch tits) when they use deca durabolin.  Some of us are lucky and we don't have to worry about it at all, and for some it will flare up instantly.  If you believe that you are gyno prone, it's a wise idea to avoid deca.

So with all the negative ramifications on the reproductive system why is deca the 2nd most popular steroid?   I have my own theories on this.  If you ask the old timers at the gym, they absolutely love deca durabolin; this is probably because back in those days the only injectables that were economical and available were testosterone and deca.  In those times, they didn't have access to anti estrogens so it made logical sense they would pick deca over testosterone; this probably helped fuel the idea in the mainstream that steroids 'shrink your penis' or other myths.  If you ask older women who have dated bodybuilders back in the 70's or 80's they might tell you that they had a boyfriend who used steroids who couldn't get an erection, so its highly likely he was using deca.   With the younger crowd, I believe the word "deca" is very catchy so thats the steroid they choose, plus oral deca is widely availabe at a good price – this makes the product that much more popular.

In any event deca durabolin is typically ran for 6-8 weeks and stacked with testosterone, and guys will typically use something to kickstart the cycle – think dianabol or winstrol.
