- Briefing
- - Next-Generation Special Forces with members of FOXHOUND took over Shadow Moses Island, the nuclear weapons disposal facility, and demands the remains of Big Boss to be returned in 24 hours. If not, they will launch a nuclear weapon.
- - Snake needs to infiltrate the island with two missions: rescue DARPA chief Donald Anderson and ArmsTech president Kenneth Baker, and determine whether they are able to launch a nuclear strike, stopping them if they do.
- - Snake is approaching by sub, which will launch a SDV (similar to a torpedo with Snake in it), who would then need to dispose of the SDV and swim the rest of the way through.
- - Countdown of 24 hours started 5 hours ago.
- - President of US is in charge. No COG issued until it's determined that the terrorists are able to launch a nuclear strike. The NSA and DIA are getting involved too.
- - Nuclear Specialist Support: Nastasha Romanenko.
- - Roy Campbell's niece, Meryl, is being held hostage. She was called in for a resupply of troops, since some soldiers were missing.
- - Campbell is retired, but Snake is helping him out under 2 conditions: complete disclosure from Campbell, and taking orders only from him and no one else.
- - Dr Naomi is in charge of FOXHOUND's gene therapy. She knows more about those soldiers than anyone else.
- - DARPA chief knows the detonation code for the nuclear missile warhead.
- - The terrorists want Big Boss's remains for his genes, since gene therapy can be used to enhance soldier capabilities. Big Boss's body has been preserved in a cryo-chamber, and is being analyzed for gene strengthening purposes.
- - The Next-Generation Special Forces are strengthened by gene therapy, but don't have much battle experience. They are mercenaries from Big Boss's private guard with contracts bought off. All of them who were present in the secret exercise unanimously engaged in the revolt. Not all of them showed up to the secret exercise though.
- - FOXHOUND members involved: Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, Decoy Octopus, Vulcan Raven, Revolver Ocelot, Liquid Snake.
- Gameplay
- - Snake makes it to the Heliport, and then sneaks into the building into the Tank Hangar. He hears some soldiers talking about another intruder who already killed three people. Snake then gets to the elevator to Holding Cells B1, which is where the DARPA chief is.
- - Snake sees a woman (obviously Meryl) in a cell, but proceeds to the next cell to meet the DARPA chief. The DARPA chief explains that the secret exercise was for testing Metal Gear Rex, which was secretly being developed.
- - The DARPA chief explains that the terrorists need two nuclear detonation codes, which are with him and the Armstech president Kenneth Baker. However, they already have the DARPA chief's code because of Psycho Mantis, who read his mind. The DARPA chief does explain that there is a way to override the detonation codes, using the PAL card keys.
- - The DARPA chief also explains that Baker is in B2, behind a wall that was cemented but not painted. The DARPA chief then seems to experience some kind of heart attack and dies.
- - The door to the cell is opened, and Snake finds Meryl with the guard's uniform that she stole. Meryl hesitates to fire her gun, even when other soldiers come in. Meryl runs away after the battle.
- - Snake then sees a vision of Ocelot torturing somebody who ends up dying, with Liquid being furious that the victim was killed.
- - In South Armory B2, Snake finds the Armstech President, but he's trapped under wires that connect to C4 explosives. Revolver Ocelot comes in and challenges Snake to a duel.
- - After beating Revolver Ocelot, a mysterious invisible ninja comes in, who saves Baker and slices off Ocelot's right arm. Snake tries to engage the ninja, but the ninja escapes. Snake then approaches Baker.
- - Regarding the detonation codes, he said that both himself and the DARPA chief have psychic resistance through surgical implants to counter Psycho Mantis (so the DARPA chief was lying). Baker succumbed to Ocelot's torture, however, and revealed the detonation code to them.
- - Baker seems to be under the impression that Snake was sent by "Jim" and gave him an optical disk with all the information about the test exercise.
- - Snake asks about the override keys, which Baker says are with Meryl. Baker also suggests meeting Hal Emmerich, the scientist who was designing Metal Gear Rex.
- - When asked about the ninja, Baker seemed to relate it to the creation of Genome Soldiers. He suggests asking Naomi about the details. Before Baker could elaborate, he experiences a similar heart attack as the DARPA chief. But he seems to know what it is, implying that those guys at Pentagon actually went ahead and did "it".
- - Snake contacts Meryl, who opens the cargo door so that Snake can enter the Nuke Building where Hal Emerich is. On the canyon, Snake is confronted by "Deepthroat" (presumably the ninja earlier) who warns Snake of mines.
- - In the same area, Snake encounters Vulcan Raven on a M1 tank and defeats him. Vulcan Raven contacts somebody (presumably Liquid) and asks if he is sure it's okay to let Snake go. Vulcan Raven predicts that he will meet Snake in battle again.
- - In the first floor of the Nuke Building, Naomi had all of Snake's dangerous weapons disabled because of all the nuclear waste stored around the area.
- - Snake gets to B2, where Hal Emmerich is, when he finds a gassed room with an electrified floor. Deepthroat contacts Snake and tells him to use a remote-controlled missile to destroy the generator for the electrified floor.
- - Snake then approaches the room with Hal Emmerich, only to find the Ninja leaving a bloody mess while slicing up all the soldiers in the area.
- - The Ninja confronts Hal Emmerich, but only seems to be interested in Snake. The Ninja claims to be neither friend nor foe, but only seeks a battle to the death with Snake.
- - Snake defeats the Ninja in hand-to-hand combat, and realizes that the Ninja could be none other than Gray Fox. The ninja disappears and leaves.
- - Hal Emmerich comes out, scared, and Snake asks him about Metal Gear Rex. Hal genuinely did not seem to be aware that Metal Gear Rex can fire nuclear warheads, and laments his contributions towards the design. He thought it was supposed to be a defensive measure that strikes down nuclear warheads instead. Hal agrees to assist Snake in taking down Metal Gear Rex, and takes the nickname Otacon (Otaku Convention).
- - Snake heads to B1, and waits in front of the female restroom for Meryl (disguised as a soldier) to enter. Snake tries to ambush her, but she manages to sneak up on him once again.
- - Meryl gives Snake one of the card keys to override the detonation codes, but she never received the other two.
- - Meryl explains how she became a soldier so she can feel closer to her father, who died in war. She trained very hard to become a soldier. But she is still a rookie, and hesitates to pull the trigger. She wonders if she's actually ready for battle at all.
- - Snake suggests that she stays behind, but Meryl insisted on going ahead, since it's the only way she can know she's ready.
- - As Snake and Meryl approach the commander room, Meryl suddenly seems to struggle in pain, but then gets up as normal and claims she's fine, but having trouble with walking straight. She is likely possessed by Psycho Mantis.
- - In the Commander Room, Meryl seems to try seducing Snake, but he resists. Psycho Mantis reveals himself, impressed that Snake is able to resist. Snake knocks out Meryl and engages Psycho Mantis.
- - Best boss fight
- - After taking down Psycho Mantis, he starts to explain his life, on how he has had psychic abilities at a very young age. The first mind he pried into was his father, who actually resented him due to the mother dying from childbirth. Mantis got scared, and burned down his entire village, including his father.
- - Throughout his life, he has read the minds of thousands of people, and he constantly found greed and selfishness in humanity. He joined Liquid in the revolt only because he wanted to hurt as many people as possible, and didn't care about anything else. But Snake was different; Psycho Mantis saw Snake as a pure evil entity, worse than Liquid even.
- - Psycho Mantis also stated that Snake had a large part in Meryl's heart, but did not know whether their futures lie together. Psycho Mantis opens the hidden door that leads to the northern building, and gives Snake directions to Metal Gear's underground base, stating that this is the first time he used his powers to help someone.
- - Snake and Meryl cross the caves, where Meryl befriends some wolves. Meryl also seems to know the locations of the mines from Psycho Mantis's possession. After crossing the mine area, however, Meryl gets sniped in her legs and collapses. Snake realizes that a sniper is using Meryl as bait for Snake, while Campbell and Naomi confirm that it must be Sniper Wolf.
- - Meryl cries about how war is meaningless, and tries to grab her gun so she can kill herself. Snake yells at her not to do so.
- - Snake insists on saving Meryl and leaves the area to find a sniper rifle, assured that Sniper Wolf won't kill Meryl since she is valuable bait. Otacon tells Snake about the sniper rifle in the Armory, so Snake travels all the way back there to get the rifle, and then returns to engage Sniper Wolf.
- - After beating Sniper Wolf, Snake realizes that Meryl is missing, and proceeds to the Communications Towers. However, he gets ambushed by soldiers + Sniper Wolf, and gets captured.
- - Snake overhears Liquid talking about how they need Big Boss's DNA in addition to Snake's. Sniper Wolf is confident that the White House will not agree to their demands.
- - Ocelot asks about the ninja, but Liquid doesn't seem to know anything. He suspects there is a Spy within them, however. He also doesn't know what killed Octopus and Baker, implying that the DARPA Chief I met was actually Decoy Octopus. Liquid tells Ocelot not to screw up with Snake like how he did with the DARPA chief.
- - Liquid gets a call, learning that the White House refuses to give in to their demands, so they plan to launch the nuclear warhead. Liquid is suspicious though, since US tends to negotiate, causing Liquid to suspect that they have a trump card of sorts.
- - Ocelot gets ready to torture Snake, explaining about how they are planning to sell Metal Gear to Russia. The Hind D was just a down payment. Ocelot doesn't care about Liquid's revolution, he just wants Russia to be strong again.
- - Ocelot also grabs the optical disk, and asks him about the card key. Where the other two are, and what the trick is to using them, but Snake didn't know.
- - Ocelot tells Snake that if he surrenders during the torture, then Meryl will die. Snake doesn't give in, and endures the torture.
- - In the prison cell, Snake finds the DARPA chief's corpse, but it's rotting as if he were dead for days (further confirming that the DARPA chief that died earlier today was just Octopus). All of his blood seems to be sucked out, but Campbell said there shouldn't have been anything special in his blood besides the nanomachines and the transmitter.
- - Snake tries to talk to Naomi to ease off the pain from torture. Snake asks about her family, which wasn't a happy topic for her. Snake said he had no family, except possibly Big Boss who said he was his father. Snake was able to kill him, even while knowing that, saying it was what Big Boss wanted.
- - Naomi said she didn't have a real family either, just an older brother (not blood-related) that put her through school. She asked if Snake had friends, and he said he only had one: Frank Jeager aka Gray Fox. Snake first met him in Outer Heaven, where Gray Fox showed him the ropes. They never talked about their personal lives, and they eventually fought each other barehanded in the minefield. War is no reason to end a friendship.
- - Naomi also explains that the reason why she wanted to study genes was so she could learn about who she is, since she knew nothing about her family.
- - Snake calls Otacon, who comes in and gives Snake a Lv6 key, some ketchup, and Sniper Wolf's handkerchief. He said Sniper Wolf must be a nice person, since she cared for the dogs here.
- - Snake tricks the guard, and escapes with all his stuff. Sometime later, a call from Deepthroat indicates that there's a bomb in Snake's items, so Snake throws it away. This suggests that Deepthroat might be working from inside, to know something like this.
- (So Ocelot "screwed up" with the DARPA chief, implying that they never learned the DARPA chief's detonation code. The DARPA chief Snake met was actually Decoy Octopus claiming that he leaked the detonation code. It seems they wanted Snake to believe that the DARPA chief leaked his code, when he actually didn't)
- - As Snake approaches the Communication Tower, he recalls Meryl's words when she was sniped. Naomi asks Snake if Meryl meant something special to him, but Snake denies it, feeling interrogated. Campbell pointed out that Naomi's grandfather was in the FBI (it's in the genes). Naomi explains that her grandfather who was part of the Mafia sting operations in New York. Snake gets suspicious, since she previous said she had no family, but she replied that she researched it later.
- - Snake enters Communication Tower A, but triggered some sensors in order to proceed, causing guards to swarm in. Snake tries to enter through the normal walkway to Communication Tower B, but the door wouldn't open. Calling Otacon, it turns out that the door is often frozen from the other side, and can't be opened from this side. Snake would have to rely on the other walkway in the roof... while being pursued by soldiers.
- - Snake finally makes it to the roof, but Liquid arrives on the Hind D and destroys the walkway. Snake uses a rope to rappel down the tower until he reaches the middle walkway, escaping the Hind D and walking to Communication Tower B.
- - Snake finds that the stairs down to the base of Communication Tower B were destroyed. He also meets Otacon, who explains that he arrived using the elevator. But the elevator doesn't seem to be working, so he offers to fix it.
- - Otacon asks Snake if he believes love can bloom on the battlefield, and Snake replies that love can bloom anywhere. I suspect Otacon fell in love with Sniper Wolf.
- - While Otacon is fixing the elevator, Snake climbs up the tower to the roof to face Liquid in the Hind D.
- - Believing Liquid to be dead, Snake climbs down to the elevator which is now working. The elevator seemed to alert that the weight limit was exceeded despite Snake appearing to be alone in it. Otacon calls and informs Snake that four stealth camouflage suits went missing, and it turns out that the soldiers who stole them were on the elevator.
- - Snake takes out the soldiers and reaches the base of Communication Tower B.
- - Outside Communication Tower B, Snake gets sniped once again. Otacon calls and pleads Snake to stop fighting, since Sniper Wolf is a good person.
- - After defeating Sniper Wolf, Snake approaches her dying body, where wolves are gathering. She explains that she was a Kurd, born and raised on the battlefield, struggling to survive while the people around her would keep dying. Eventually "Saladin" (Big Boss) saved her and she became a sniper.
- - She joined Liquid's revolution out of revenge against the world. She considered this as lowering herself to the level of a dog, but Snake corrects her, indicating that she's a solitary wolf, not for sale.
- - She asks if Snake is actually "Saladin", and says that she was really just waiting to be killed, requesting Snake to set her free.
- - Otacon arrives, despairing at Sniper Wolf's state. She requests for her gun to be returned to her, and Otacon does so, stumbling on the way. Snake then shoots her.
- - Otacon cries about how he couldn't save her, and asks Snake what she was fighting for, what he himself (Otacon) is fighting for, and what Snake is fighting for. Snake said he'll tell him if he survives.
- - Snake heads towards the underground base to destroy Metal Gear Rex. On the way, he gets a call from Master Miller, who tells him privately that he used to work in the FBI and he tried to check out Naomi's story, only to discover that she was lying about her grandfather. He decides to continue digging further.
- - Snake then encounters Vulcan Raven, who points out their common ancestry, before they engage in battle.
- - When Vulcan Raven is defeated, he expresses that his body and spirit will become one with the ravens, and his spirit will be watching Snake. He also confirms that the "DARPA Chief" Snake met was actually Decoy Octopus, who even took in all of his blood. Snake asks why he would go that far, but Vulcan Raven leaves it at that. The ravens swarm over Vulcan Raven's body, leaving only his weapon.
- - Snake finally reaches the area with Metal Gear Rex, when he gets another call from Master Miller. Master Miller tells Snake and Campbell that Naomi's name is fake, and that she might be a spy. Campbell seems really concerned about this, implying that Naomi is a critical component of the mission for reasons not disclosed to Snake. Snake gets upset while Campbell insists that he'll find out the truth.
- - Otacon calls Snake, saying that he hacked into Baker's files. He explains that Metal Gear Rex is a nuclear warhead that fires from a railgun. It doesn't use fuel, so it's not considered a missile, allowing it to bypass international treaties. It's also a stealth weapon that wouldn't be detected by current missile detection technology, so it's a pretty big deal. If this information was leaked, the US would be in big trouble.
- - Snake reaches the control room, where Liquid and Ocelot were talking. They say Metal Gear Rex is activated, and Liquid plans to target a city in China, which would be easy to cover up while pressuring the US president to give in to their demands. Liquid wants Big Boss's DNA, a billion dollars, and the "FoxDie vaccine". It seems this FoxDie is what was killing Octopus and Baker.
- - Liquid plans to revive Big Boss's dream, and considers this place the new Outer Heaven. Liquid also confirms that Meryl is alive.
- - Otacon calls Snake, and explains how the PAL key works. It can only be used once, either to activate Metal Gear Rex when it's deactivated, or to deactivate it when it's activated. Ocelot hears a sound, and fires a bullet, which pushes the PAL key into the drainage ditch.
- - Snake retrieves the key and starts inputting the PAL codes. On the way, he gets a call from Master Miller, who explains that FoxDie is a new type of virus developed by the DIA that kills people by simulating a heart attack. He suspects that Naomi may have injected Snake with FoxDie. Snake asks Campbell, who said that he is interrogating Naomi. She was sending coded messages towards the Alaskan base, and is probably working with the terrorists.
- - Snake later gets a call from Naomi, who confirms that she lied, but insists that her reason for studying genetics is true. She wanted to know who she was. She was alone until she met her "big brother", who was actually Frank Jeager (Gray Fox). And then Big Boss came and took her to America. But then Snake ended up killing both Gray Fox and Big Boss.
- - All this time, she sought revenge against Snake. She helped Gray Fox escape and covered up his tracks, but it seems Gray Fox only lives for a final battle with Snake now. She confirms that she used FoxDie but also said that it wasn't her decision, that it was part of the operation. She was going to tell Snake more, but then Campbell comes in and stops her. Snake gets furious, but Campbell doesn't budge.
- - Snake finally enters the final PAL code, which ends up activating Metal Gear Rex instead of deactivating it. Master Miller reveals that he was Liquid all along, explaining that they never got the activation code from the DARPA Chief. Campbell discovered that Master Miller has been dead for three days.
- - Snake escapes the Control Room with Otacon's help, and confronts Liquid. Liquid points out that Snake has been a pawn for both sides. Even the Pentagon sent Snake only to spread the FoxDie virus around. Naomi was working with the Pentagon, but it seems she modified the FoxDie program before the operation. She was arrested because of this, but it's unknown what changes she made.
- - Liquid reveals that he is, indeed, Snake's twin. Snake got all the dominant genes of Big Boss, while Liquid got the recessive ones. Despite this, Big Boss chose Liquid, while constantly reminding him that he was the inferior one. Liquid wanted revenge against Big Boss, but Snake killed him first.
- - Liquid gets on Metal Gear Rex, and engages Snake.
- - Snake damages the radome, but fails to destroy it. Gray Fox comes in and helps Snake. At some point, Snake and Gray Fox get a chance to talk behind some crates. Snake asks Gray Fox to tell Naomi to stop her revenge, but Gray Fox says he can't do that, because he actually killed her parents. He only took her in because he couldn't bring himself to kill her too. Gray Fox requests Snake to reveal the truth to Naomi.
- - Gray Fox eventually destroys the radome, but he's cornered by Metal Gear Rex. Snake has an opportunity to fire the Stinger, but can't bring himself to pull the trigger since it would kill Gray Fox too. Metal Gear Rex eventually kills Gray Fox anyway, with Gray Fox telling Snake that they are not tools for the government, and they should fight for what they believed in.
- - After the battle, Liquid confronts Snake on top of Metal Gear Rex. Liquid's objective is to create a world where warriors like them are honored. Liquid explains that both he and Snake were children of Big Boss. They were created from his cells based on analog cloning and the Super Baby Method, where eight clone babies were transferred to a uterus and then six were aborted to strengthen fetal growth. Furthermore, Liquid was used to take in all the recessive genes, while Snake got the dominant ones.
- - Even the Genome Soldiers were all enhanced using Big Boss's genes, and were like family to Liquid and Snake. But the Asymmetry Theory suggests that species with signs of symmetry tend to die off. Liquid wants Big Boss's genes to avoid symmetry, saving his family.
- - Liquid shows that Meryl is still alive and challenges Snake to a final battle if he wishes to save her. Liquid points out that they're running out of time, which Snake confirms with Campbell, who explains that the Pentagon decided to bomb the place now that Metal Gear Rex is destroyed. The Secretary of Defense is planning to vaporize all the evidence.
- - Campbell says that he'll issue orders to cancel the bombing run, which might buy some time for Snake to escape, but he gets arrested by the Secretary of Defense, Jim Houseman, who charges him with treason. Jim decides to kill everybody now that the DARPA Chief, his friend, is already dead. He'd consider sparing Snake if he had the optical disk, but that's already gone.
- - Snake defeats Liquid and saves Meryl. Apparently Meryl endured a lot of torture too, but clung to the hope that she would see Snake again. Otacon deals with the security in order to ensure an escape route for Snake and Meryl. Liquid charges against them on the way.
- - Snake and Meryl get outside, while Liquid pursues them. However, Liquid ends up dying to FoxDie. Snake calls Campbell, who says that he was able to get in touch with the President and explained the situation. All of this was based on Jim Houseman acting alone, and he was consequently arrested. The bombers were called off.
- - Campbell instructs Snake to leave the island with Meryl on a snowmobile, where a helicopter is waiting to rescue them in Fox Island. The official story is that both Snake and Meryl died.
- - Snake talks to Naomi, but doesn't tell her the truth about her parents. Instead, he tells her that Gray Fox will always love her, and asks her to forget him and move on with her life. Snake asks about FoxDie, which killed Liquid, and asks when it will be his turn, but Naomi simply tells Snake to live.
- - Naomi narrates that while genes can tell you where you're from, it only represents your potential and does not determine your path. Humans choose what type of life they want to live. She asks Snake to live on, and states that she chose to live as well.
- - Snake gets on the snowmobile with Meryl, and says that maybe it's time for him to live for someone else as well like Meryl. He also reveals to Meryl that his real name is David.
- - Ocelot has a talk with the President, saying that FoxDie should activate soon, and that he recovered all the test data. Only the DARPA Chief knew Ocelot's true identity (working for the President), and was disposed of accordingly. Ocelot says that while Liquid thought he was the inferior one, it was actually Snake who was inferior. But apparently the President himself was "the third one", Solidus.
