  1. EARTHBOUND FUNKTASTIC GAMEPLAY MARATHON 2024
  2. Based on the event from Starmen.net
  3. From 4/20/2024 to 5/18/2024
  4.
  5. - - -
  6.
  7. Every day (except Monday) a new Game Play Point (GPP) will be added!
  8. Anyone is allowed to play and follow along. Updates are on Pastebin, Twitter and Discord!
  9. Share your progress with @CousinCatnip (on Twitch/Twitter/Discord/etc)
  10.
  11. - - -
  12.
  13. GamePlay Point (GPP) #25:
  14. Goal: BEAT THE GAME!
  15. 5/18/2024
  16.
  17. "This is it. We come to bury Giygas, not to praise him. So let's get it on! Head to Onett for the meteorite piece, then send your bad robotic self down the tunnel and put an end to the madness. And then take as much time as you can to enjoy the ending! There's a LOT of new stuff that gets said, sometimes in very unexpected places!"
  18.
  19. Today's Challenges:
  20. - Get the Goddess Ribbon
  21. - Don't use Paralysis on Pokey
  22. - No Bottle Rockets of course
  23. - Don't prepare for anything. Be Anti-Boy Scout
  24. - You can get the Gutsy Bat from a certain enemy *coughBionicKrakencough*. Can you do it?
  25. - Are you at level 60 or under? If you are, you must stay at that level and fight Giygas to complete this challenge.
  26. - Can you kill the other characters, and beat the game only with Paula?
  27. - Remember how we told you to leave a Shattered Man alive in the Scaraban Cultural Museum? Well, he'll be the only enemy who's still there after you beat Giygas. You can fight him with Paula and Ness, or with Ness alone. Be careful not to lose, though, as that apparently causes the game to hang
  28. - And the final challenge, do not enjoy the ending
  29.
  30. Today's Fun Fact:
  31. "Here's an interesting change...in the VERY end of the game. It seems that NOA was not confident in making a "Mother 3". So instead they give us a sappy "The End..?". Also, you know how in you input your name twice during the game? Well, in Mother 2, you input your name in English, and the second time in Japanese. Why? The Japanese name shows up when you're praying, and the English name appears in the credits.
  32.
  33. Thanks to Tomato for providing this Mother 2 information! Visit his Mother 2 to EarthBound and Back Again translation site for more Mother 2 to EB comparisons! [and check his book]"
  34.
  35. Today's Hint Man Moment:
  36. "When you're starting off in Onett, you're going to want to make use of those Psychic Shields and Ness's Life-Up Omega. Remember that the Ghost of Starman always starts out with his Starstorm Alpha power, which can basically kill everyone except Ness. Once you finally get in the past and engage Pokey, make sure to use Paralysis on him. He won't be able to fart that way. Next, Brainshock Giygas. It'll make things much easier while Paula's praying."

  40.
  41. Final Note:
  42. Make sure to join in if https://www.starmen.net does an official EBFGPM! They created this event and we wouldn't be able to do this version without them.
  43. This game has always meant a lot to me and shaped my philosophy in life in a lot of ways. The goal was always to get more people into it and show them a bit of that magic. I hope it can be there for others as it was for me all those years ago!
  44. Thank you for joining whether you were a player, viewer, contributor, or well-wisher!
  45. Fuzzy Pickles!!

  48.
  49. GamePlay Point (GPP) #24:
  50. Goal: Get back to Saturn Valley!
  51. 5/17/2024
  52.
  53. "International polls have ranked the inside of Ness's head as only the second-weirdest place in EarthBound, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the funky colour-changing effects and all the weirdos hanging around. After you reconcile the dark side of your mind, go to Saturn Valley and save your game."
  54.
  55. Today's Challenges:
  56. - If you have the Franklin Badge, store it away.
  57. - Can you defeat Ness's Nightmare, and still have a Flying Man with you?
  58. - Fight 10 Carefree Bombs.
  59. - Don't use the Hotel, or go to your Mother.
  60.
  61. Today's Fun Fact:
  62. ""I'm Troy McClure, and now I'll give you what you all came to see... hardcore nudity!". Okay, actually that BETTER not be the reason you came here. I assume that all of you are mature and responsible enough to handle something stupid like this. Well, anyway, if you didn't know already, yes Ness is nude in Mother 2 in Magicant. Why? Nobody really knows. At least I don't."
  63.
  64. Today's Fun Fact:
  65. "Magicant is relatively easy if you know the ropes. If you have all the best equipment, the Franklin Badge, and plenty of PP Restoring Items, Magicant and Ness's Nightmare will be a breeze. Probably the biggest and most unassuming hint EBounding will give you is to use AUTO FIGHT when fighting Ness's Nightmare, but I don't see what's wrong with just doing it yourself. As long as you have something that will block Flash attacks (like the Sea, Night, or Earth Pendants) you will win for sure."

  72. GamePlay Point (GPP) #23:
  73. Goal: Get to Magicant!
  74. 5/16/2024
  75.
  76. "Okay, class, we've got an extended session today. Now that you've got the Tendas yacking away again, head through the caves to Lumine Hall. Then fight past the dinosaurs and pyrokinetic maniacs and get the last melody at Fire Springs. Save your game in Magicant."
  77.
  78. Today's Challenges:
  79. - Collect all items in Lumine Hall
  80. - I'll keep saying "NO BOTTLE ROCKETS" till the cows come home, and then I'll say it to the cows. Because cows play EarthBound
  81. - Continue to use the Casey bat. But if you get something cool like the Gutsy Bat, use that instead. You deserve it!
  82. - Get the elusive Broken Antenna. And the Star Pendant. I got a Star Pendant once; it took me three hours and I got all my characters to level 99 before I was done.
  83. - A challenge is going to be to defeat Giygas at Lv. 60 or lower, but if you're already past that, don't blame yourself.
  84.
  85. Today's Fun Fact:
  86. "There’s a small translation error in what the ATM-acting Tenda says here. In MOTHER 2, after a transaction goes awry or you cancel a transaction, he says something roughly along the lines of, “I would never do anything to displease you.”
  87. In EarthBound, this got translated to, “I don’t think you’ve ever really gotten into bad trouble.”
  88. I think this was a simple case of the translator rushing through and accidentally skipping over a few characters, thereby changing the meaning."

  90.
  91. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  92. "There's lots of powerful items to collect in today's GPP. Make sure you collect them all! This includes the Diadem of Kings, the Sea Pendant, Cloak of Kings, and various stat increasing capsules. As for the bosses, remember that Electro Spector has a Psychic Power shield equipped. So you might just want to use Jeff's Bottle Rockets or the Neutralizer. Also remember that Diamond Dog has a normal Power Shield. So one multi-bottle rocket could come flying back into Jeff's face. I'll say it again: Neutralizer is the key. Finally, before you get the last melody, give Ness all the best stuff. This includes the Sea Pendant (or Star if you got it), the Souvenir Coin, the Franklin Badge, and all the Magic Truffles and Brain Food Lunches. You might want to equip him with a less powerful braclet since the Goddess Bracelet can be found quickly in Magicant. Time to take the big dive into your own mind!"

  98.
  99. GamePlay Point (GPP) #22:
  100. Goal: Give Overcoming Shyness to Tenda Village!
  101. 5/15/2024
  102.
  103. "Uhoh! Apple Kid's been kidnapped, and he had the Shyness Book last! It's time to mount a rescue mission in Winters. Once you've totally scrapped the Starman Deluxe, head to Onett and pick up your very own copy of Overcoming Shyness. Take it back to Tenda Village and then save your game."
  104.
  105. Today's Challenges:
  106. - Get one of your characters Diamondnized before entering Stonehenge, and keep it that way. Choose wisely
  107. - Again, no bottle rockets on Starman DX
  108. - Only PSI Thunder can be used against Starman DX. Physical attacks can also be used
  109. - Get the Sword of Kings, then throw it away! Are you crazy enough to do it?
  110. - Get all the items before fighting SMDX
  111. - Use your Casey Bat during the entire GPP
  112.
  113. Today's Fun Fact:
  114. "FINALLY! An INTERESTING change! I'm sure you all were wondering "Hmmm, the Pencil is a Squid...so what's the eraser?" Well, here's your answer...sort of. I don't really understand what this thing is and why it's there, but according to Tomato's site, it is a "wooden limbless doll". The reason it's there is because it is supposed to be a Japanese play on words. Something we may never understand..."
  115.
  116. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  117. "There's a lot of neat stuff in the Stonehenge base. And of course there's a lot of deadly things too. But you can make encounters with Starmen a lot easier, if you approach them like in the screenshot. This is also good if you're looking for that Sword of Kings; in fact, if you've got the Casey Bat equipped, it'll almost guarantee a victory on a surprise attack against a lone Starman. Once you shut down the base, make sure to seek out the Cup of Lifenoodles and the Guts Capsule."
  118.

  123.
  124. GamePlay Point (GPP) #21:
  125. Goal: Get to Tenda Village!
  126. 5/14/2024
  127.
  128. "The Pyramid was a tough trek, but you can relax now; you're inside of Dungeon Man, EarthBound's answer to stuff like Gundam Wing. Explore all the dead ends, read all the hilarious signs, and have a chat with Brick Road's face. Keep going to Deep Darkness, take out the Master, meet up with Poo, and save in Tenda Village."
  129.
  130. Today's Challenges:
  131. - Again, NO BOTTLE ROCKETS. You can only use them on regular enemies
  132. - Collect all the Magic Truffles (no player's guide of course). You can use the Piggy Snout though
  133. - Before you begin, store away your Franklin Badge
  134.
  135. Today's Fun Fact:
  136. [Catnip Note: I made a better Fun Fact as it was just a repeat fact originally]
  137. "In MOTHER 2, the "Tenda Tribe" is actually called the “Gumi Tribe”. “Gumi” is the Japanese word (probably adopted from German I assume) for “gummies”, as in the type of candy. A few people have suggested that “Tenda” is a play on “Tender”, which is a similar concept. Incidentally, this is also why in some Japanese gag manga, you might see some of the characters trying to eat members of this tribe."

  139. https://legendsoflocalization.com/earthbound/tenda-village/
  140.
  141. Today's Hint Man Moment:
  142. "Brickroad's Dungeon has a lot of items. Try seeking the ones that are hard to get to. You'll see that they're more useful and powerful. Next seek out all the Magic Truffles. I would suggest saving them for Ness in Magicant. I don't quite have a map to help out, and I'm not sure how well text would help. So have fun finding out on your own!"
  143.

  148.
  149. GamePlay Point (GPP) #20:
  150. Goal: Get to the DUNGEON MAN!
  151. 5/12/2024
  152.
  153. "The Pyramid is quite challenging, what with its lack of ways to avoid enemies and its difficult boss, the Guardian General. But you've got to get across the river, and there's always the Hawk Eye to think about, so you'd better get cracking. Save your game inside of Dungeon Man."
  154.
  155. Today's Challenges:
  156. - Don't use PSI to heal any ailments during the GPP
  157. - Collect every item in the Pyramid
  158. - Don't let anyone get killed
  159. - Don't use PSI Freeze
  160. - Don't give the Hawk Eye to Poo. Waste your inventory space intentionally
  161.
  162. Today's Fun Fact:
  163. "Furthermore, the "knock" is really "don", which means knock. In other unrelated changes, ATM (the sign above the room) is really CARD. Amazing, eh? Are you surprised by these changes? No? YOU JERK! YOU'RE FIRED FROM THE INTERWEB!!!~"
  164.
  165. Today's Hint Man Moment:
  166. "Before going into the Pyramid make sure you have plenty of reviving items. You'll also be using a lot of heavy PSI in here too. So keep that in mind. Another short hint is that Jeff's HP sucker will work very well against all the "mummy-type" enemies. Finally, you'll want to take advantage of the Master Criminal Worms. As you can see they give you ample EXP. This one was a life saver since I found it before I entered the pyramids. But be sure to read Tomato's Scaraba EXP. trick if you want to get an ENORMOUS boost in your levels. It involves finding many MCW's. So try that out. And don't forget that you can give the Hawk Eye to Poo and free up some inventory space for the other three characters. You'll need that for Dungeon Man."
  167.
  168. Check out the original post from 2004 here:
  169. https://web.archive.org/web/20050216210709/http://starmen.net/ebfgp/gp20.php
  170.
  171. - - -
  172.
  173. GamePlay Point (GPP) #19:
  174. Goal: Get Pink Cloud & Reach Scaraba!
  175. 5/11/2024
  176.
  177. "Time for a little travelling! Your two destinations today are Scaraba and the Pink Cloud. The former involves going for a boat ride and fighting the Kraken, and the latter involves exploring a cave and fighting Thunder and Storm. You can do these objectives in whatever order you please, but when you're done I want you to go save in Scaraba so we can all do the Pyramid tomorrow."
  178.
  179. Today's Challenges:
  180. - Don't use offensive PSI on the Kraken. And no Big Bottle Rockets and Super Bombs
  181. - Throw the Pair of Dirty Socks at the Kraken if you still have them. That way it won't seem so silly that the Captain threw his slippers at the beast
  182. - Collect all the Pink Cloud items before you face Thunder and Storm
  183. - Don't use PSI Freeze on Thunder and Storm
  184. - When facing Thunder and Storm, have Ness get in one SMAAAAAASH! attack, before they are defeated
  185.
  186. Today's Fun Fact:
  187. "Anyway, as for all the Hospitals in EarthBound, they once had a red cross on all the buildings (even the nurses had crosses). The reason? Either copyright junk with the Red Cross, or the most likely reason is that it is a CROSS (see the NOA Guidelines), which may convert kids to have moral standards or something. I dunno."
  188.
  189. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  190. "The Kraken can be pretty formidable, depending on when you fight him. If you fight him after you defeat Thunder and Storm, he should be no problem. But the EXP. you get from him might help you out in the Pink Cloud Caves. So it's up to you. An all out PSI Freeze attack should defeat him very quickly. The same goes for Thunder and Storm. Make sure you have the Franklin Badge! I also suggest giving it to Paula since she has low HP, and her attacks are highly needed. Jeff's typical artillery works as well. Finally, you'll probably come across a piece of Rock Candy in the Pink Cloud caves. Before you gobble it down, remember the "Rock Candy Trick". If you have several condiments with your Rock Candy (I suggest Delisauce, or Sugar), and use the Rock Candy in battle, one of your stats will be raised. But that's not all. Assuming it's the last item in your inventory, you'll still have the Rock Candy! Only the condiment is used. You can do this several times (if not infinite), as long as you do it in battle, keep the Rock Candy at the back, and have at least 2 condiments. Suger and Delisauce will raise the stat by 2, so invest in those. Unfortunately, they've apparently fixed this glitch in the GBA version."

  196.
  197. GamePlay Point (GPP) #18:
  198. Goal: Get the Heiroglyph Copy & Magnet Hill!
  199. 5/10/2024
  200.
  201. "Got Poo? Good. Today you'll be finishing Mu training. Once Poo joins the rest of the party, take him to the museum and get the Heiroglyph Copy. After that, you'll get a phone call from Mr. Spoon. Get an autograph from Venus so Mr. Spoon will let you into the sewer, then fight the Plague Rat of Doom and get the fifth melody."
  202.
  203. Today's Challenges:
  204. - Avoid at least one of the Shattered Men in the Summer's Museum. This is important if you want to do an interesting challenge later.
  205. - Don't use Paralysis in the sewers.
  206. - Can you defeat the Plague Rat of Doom with PSI Flash? No other offensive attacks can be used.
  207. - Collect every item before you face the PRoD.
  208. - Try to get the Carrot Key without setting off the melody at Magnet Hill.
  209.
  210. Today's Fun Fact:
  211. "Topollo was changed to Topolla. Not extremely exciting, but filler is fun. Anyway, a more interesting topic would be the fact that Mr. Spoon, was actually called Mr. Ricebowl in Mother 2. Also, Mr. Fork was called Mr. Chopstick. Obviously this was changed for cultural reasons."
  212.
  213. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  214. "In the beginning of the GPP, you're going to be facing Shattered Men in the Museum. A few blasts of Freeze will do the trick. Even though Poo is relatively weak, his Freeze attack will help out immensely. Keep him alive so he can gain a few levels. Next, in the sewers, make use of the paralysis attack. A lot of enemies there are susceptible to it. Now when you face the Plague Rat of Doom, try your strongest form of PSI Flash. The PRoD is susceptible to it, and might even be defeated with one attack. It's worth a shot. Finally, when the PRoD is defeated, make sure to seak out the Broken Bazooka for Jeff. Infinite "super bombs" is a very good thing. "
  215.

  220.
  221. GamePlay Point (GPP) #17:
  222. Goal: Beat Shrooom! & Eat Cake!
  223. 5/9/2024
  224.
  225. "Today we'll be going on a magical trip without ever leaving the room. First, beat up Shrooom!, then fly to Summers. That'll be the end of the Sky Runner, so get into the Stoic Club, get that wacky Magic Cake lady to snap out of her funk, and go get a tasty treat from her. Save your game as Poo in the palace."
  226.
  227. Today's Challenges:
  228. - When fighting Shrooom!, get your whole party "mashroomized"
  229. - Once you arrive in Summers, get at least one character all the best equipment (at this point in the game)
  230. - Get the Xterminator Spray
  231. - Buy every item at the restaurant
  232.
  233. Today's Fun Fact:
  234. "When Tony's "friend" calls you in Toto, he asks for the player's name. In Mother 2, he says that you can only spell your name in English, so don't spell it wrong. In EarthBound he just says not to spell it wrong. Also, you'll see that the letters are different, and the boxes that they're in are different sizes! Now you might be saying, "Why only in English?!". Well, you'll find out why in a later GPP."
  235.
  236. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  237. "Do you have a teddy bear with you? If you don't, you might be wishing you brought one. The Teddy Bear has a good chance of getting the Shrooom's! spore attack. Therefore the rest of your party can remain sane. When fighting this fungus, just use Fire and PSI Special as fast as you can. Now when you arrive in Summers, you're going to want to be careful with what you spend your money on. Although the Diamond Band looks powerful, you can get it for a lot less in Deep Darkness, but then again you might want the defense it provides for the Kraken fight later."

  245. GamePlay Point (GPP) #16:
  246. Goal: Finish Monkey Caves & Go to Winters!
  247. 5/8/2024
  248.
  249. "Ugh... The Monkey Cave. Don't forget to bring a Skip Sandwich and a Picnic Lunch; you don't want to have to go back more than you have to. And don't forget the Pencil Eraser either. Once Talah Rama hooks you up with some philosophical advice and a Yogurt Machine, burn sneaker for Fourside and rescue Paula from the Clumsy Robot. Then hitch a ride back to Threed, fly to Winters, and save your game in Dr. Andonut's lab. Whew!"
  250.
  251. Today's Challenges:
  252. - Get every item in the Monkey Cave in 7 minutes and 30 seconds (or less).
  253. - Don't get any items in the Monkey Cave unless you absolutely have to. Go to the store and buy them.
  254. - Avoid all Sentry Robots (except for the first one).
  255. - Defeat the Clumsy Robot in 40 seconds or less.
  256. - No Super Bombs against the Clumsy Robot.
  257.
  258. Today's Fun Fact:
  259. "This guy in Mother 2 sort of says the same thing as his EarthBound counterpart, except instead of Solitare, he mentions he lost at Monopoly. Like many various changes, this one was probably due to trademark issues. Of course, it's also interesting that the guy in EarthBound doesn't say that he just lost, but that he lost his shirt. Many people originally thought the Mother 2 version would mention "Strip Poker". But it seems this guy was playing "Strip Solitare"? It's disturbing any way you cut it."
  260.
  261. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  262. "Again I'm going to mention to bring the Picnic Lunch, the Skip Sandwich, and the Pencil Eraser with you to the Monkey Cave! There's nothing worse than having to go all the way back, or having to go all the way back again because you bought the wrong items. But once you have those items, be sure to seek out every item in the Monkey Cave. These include the Flame Pendant, Broken Tube (Hungry HP Sucker), and the Bag of Dragonite (useful for the Clumsy Robot Battle). When you reach the Monotoli building, you'll probably want to avoid the Sentry robots, since they have damaging bottle rockets. This may prove to be a challenge, but it is possible to avoid them all, except the very first one. Finally, when you reach the Clumsy Robot, remember that he has Psychic Shield surrounding him. Use the Neutralizer or a weak PSI attack (PSI Flash A). Hold off on attacking him until he eats his Bologna Sandwich (how a robot can eat food is a mystery to me). Then do an all out assault on him with Super Bombs, PSI Special, and the Dragonite, until the Runaway Five come in to save the day. Not Bottle Rockets. They don't really work that well on him."

  268.
  269. GamePlay Point (GPP) #15:
  270. Goal: Finish Moonside!
  271. 5/7/2024
  272.
  273. "When popular crime boss Everdred is found lying comatose in an alleyway, there's only one thing to do: go to Moonside! Defeat the evil Mani Mani, then meet Escargo Express's "Neglected Class." Save your game before you get to the Monkey Cave."
  274.
  275. Today's Challenges:
  276. - Give the guy who wants something one of your best items, like the Magic Truffle you may have gotten in Twoson. Or you could give him something useless like the Pair of Dirty Socks or a Broken Spray Can, which isn't really a challenge but is pretty funny
  277. - When you fight Robo Pumps, defeat them before they reach 2
  278. - No bottle rockets
  279. - Don't equip the Night Pendant.
  280. - People playing Mother 2 on their GBAs: turn your GBA upside down. People playing EarthBound on their SNES: turn your TV upside down. !edisnooM ot emocleW
  281.
  282. Today's Fun Fact:
  283. "There wasn't anything terribly different in during this portion of the game, besides of course the "bar" and "Monotoly" building. In this part though, the person says (roughly translated), "You're mailboxes, and you have a habit of staggering around". Why that had to be changed is just as much of a mystery as Moonside itself."
  284.
  285. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  286. "When in Moonside, be sure to seek out as many items as you can, especially the Night Pendant. This will be particulary useful in the fight with Mani Mani, since it uses Flash. Also beware of Mani Mani's paralysis attack. This can be fairly annoying even after battle. The easiest (cheapest) way to beat it, of course, is simply a Big Bottle Rocket, and maybe a few doses of Ness special PSI. I also read in Nintendo Power once that a Super Bomb would end the battle quickly."

  293. GamePlay Point (GPP) #14:
  294. Goal: Beat the Dept. Store Spook!
  295. 5/5/2024
  296.
  297. "Buy! Buy! Buy! After we save the Runaway Five, we'll be enjoying the wonderful world of the Fourside Department Store. There're more powerful weapons and armaments waiting for you. Of course, there's a huge price to pay for them: Paula gets kidnapped! Chase down the Dept. Store Spook, then save the game once you've restored power to the building."
  298.
  299. Today's Challenges:
  300. - Don't use Bottle Rockets or Bombs against the Dept. Store Spook.
  301. - Fight three of each enemy (The Musica, Mysical Record, and the Scalding Cup of Coffee)
  302. - Only use alpha PSI.
  303. - Store away your Franklin Badge before Paula gets kidnapped, but hang onto the Pencil Eraser.
  304.
  305. Today's Fun Fact
  306. "Big change. The cafe turns out to be a bar. Here you'll find all the drunken lowlifes of Fourside. As a result, NOA replaced "alcohol" with caffeine throughout the whole game. Furthermore, the name of the bar/cafe in Mother 2 is "Boruhesu's Bar." Is it just me or does 'Boruhesu' sound like the Japanese way of saying Boris? Maybe he's waiting for moose und squirrel to show up..."
  307.
  308. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  309. "Basically do the opposite of the challenges for this GPP. Don't forget about the arms dealer on the side of the store. One Big Bottle rocket should finish off the Department Store Spook. But what's the fun in that? Try having every character equipped with a [Teddy Bear] before Paula is kidnapped. If you can keep the Teddy Bears alive up till you fight the Dept. Store Spook, you have a good chance of avoiding his deadly PSI Freeze attack. it doesn't affect the Teddy Bear at all. Also, make sure Paula doesn't take anything important from you when she's kidnapped, with the exception of the Pencil Eraser, which Escargo Express will liberate from you if you leave it with her. One time I let Paula take my town map and then proceeded to get lost in Fourside trying to find the hospital."

  317. Goal: Beat ALL 5 Moles!
  318. 5/4/2024
  319.
  320. "Five big moles versus three young adventurers. Will justice prevail? Will Ness & co. get so lost that they have to use an Exit Mouse to get out? It's all up to you today. This is a pretty rough gpp, so save your game once the moles have been stomped out in the new cave outside of the miner's shack. [If you don't see the new cave entrance then you didn't go to the Fourside theatre yet!]"
  321.
  322. Today's Challenges:
  323. - Don't use Freeze or Bottle Rockets on the Guardian Diggers. Think of other clever ways to beat them.
  324. Collect every item in the Mole Maze, before you FIGHT the moles (exclude the items behind the moles).
  325. - Have the enemy surprise attack you every time.
  326. - Don't use any Life Noodles.
  327. - Apologize to each Guardian Digger every time you attack them and ultimately defeat them. Explain that you don't mean to remove them from their natural habitat, but it's a necessary evil in order to save the world. Maybe if you can get them to realize that Giygas is going to crush them if you don't succeed, you can get them to cooperate.
  328.
  329. Today's Fun Fact:
  330. "There aren't very many changes in Dusty Dunes, so we'll just look at Fourside. As you can see in the picture, "Department" was changed to "Dept. Store", to show stupid American children that it is a store. There were several other slight name changes in Fourside as well. Such as the Topolla Theater called "Topollo" and the Monotoli building being called "Monotoly". I guess the "i" makes it sound Italian, and therefore very sinister and evil. Or maybe they just thought it was too much like "Monopoly" and didn't want to get sued."
  331.
  332. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  333. "The mole caves aren't too bad if you have a high enough levels, and know how to attack the moles. Remember, the Mole always has a power shield equipped. So either use the most powerful PSI Freeze attack, or Jeff's Big Bottle Rockets. However, if the rockets don't kill in one blow, they'll be deflected back onto Jeff. Why not just use the Neutralizer first to kill the shield? (Answer: Because you don't have it yet. You don't get it until the Monkey Cave. I thought you fixed the Broken Machine to make it, but that only gives you the Counter-PSI Unit, which isn't the same thing at all. Silly me.) The real danger is with other enemies in the mine. With their ability to poison, paralyze, and inflict great damage, you're going to want various healing items with you. Hope you stocked up on Peanut Cheese Bars, because those are a BIG help here."

  341. Goal: Visit the Monotoli Building & Miner's Shack!
  342. 5/3/2024
  343.
  344. "Today's GPP is like one of those Time Trial levels from the Tour De France; not much action, but still exciting in its own right. Catch a bus to Fourside, hook up the hungry miner with some grub, visit Pokey and his pop at the Monotoli building, talk to the theatre manager then head back to the desert and save in the miner's shack. Psych yourself up for one of the toughest parts of the game tomorrow: the Guardian Diggers!"
  345.
  346. Today's Challenges:
  347. - Fight 5 Criminal Caterpillars
  348. - Fight each type of Desert creature too.
  349. - Collect every item that can be found in the desert.
  350. - Talk to the Sesame Seeds and all the old bones.
  351. - If you get sunstroke, only use wet towels to heal yourself. Or just leave it on and try to get out of the desert before you collapse.
  352. - Fight a Criminal Caterpillar and win WITHOUT sneaking up from behind and getting an instant win.
  353.
  354. Today's Fun Fact:
  355. "When Tomato first saw this part of Mother 2, he thought that the Japanese writers made some weird mistakes, since the syllables are mixed up in some places. But apparently this is a part of Japanese slang. This makes the guy look like a total dolt and stuff. So it was obviously intentional. But for some reason he gets girls from both towns. WHY?!"
  356.
  357. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  358. "Here's a few tips that'll help you with the rest of the game. First, go to the Threed hospital. If you look in the first room there'll be a drawer. Check it out, and you'll find the Insignificant Item. Go back to Twoson (the busses work now), and go to the Twoson hospital. There'll be a man on the first floor on the top. Give him the Insignificant Item, and he'll give you the Magic Truffle! It's only practical to use for Paula right now, so use it wisely. Secondly, if you come across a Criminal Caterpillar, make sure you fight it! He's a very tough enemy however. But the EXP you earn is well worth it. And last but not least except that it is, go get the Contact Lens and trade up for the Dirty Socks. How you use them is up to you."

  370.
  371. Today's Challenges:
  372. - Fight 25 Foppys.
  373. - No PSI in the factory. Only items can be used.
  374. - Fight the Trillionage sprout with at least TWO of your party members "Mushroomized".
  375. - Don't equip the Mr. Saturn Coin, or the Coin of Slumber.
  376. - Hit an enemy with the Bionic Slingshot while crying. Is it even possible? I don't know.
  377.
  378. Today's Fun Fact:
  379. "The coffee scene was basically a direct translation. But there are some interesting facts about the Mother 2 version. For example, this is one of the points in the game that uses Kanji (a complex language of written characters, adopted by China over 1000 years ago). The use of Kanji makes this part of the game unique. Another difference is the very last paragraph. It's translation is:
  380. May the goddess of good fortune always smile upon you....
  381. Interesting, eh?"
  382.
  383. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  384. "Do you have the Slingshot equipped? You shouldn't, because it's a lousy weapon. Unless you're a risk-taker like me. Anyway, there's a few more hints for facing Belch's Fly Honey factory. Don't go looking in the other rooms of the factory until Belch is defeated. That way you can get the items without getting hurt. Secondly, make use of the legendary Butterfly room. Use it to heal yourself, or just stay in the area if you want to build your level (mmm, Foppies.) Now as for going to face the Trillionage sprout, be sure to have the coins equipped. Secondly, avoid the mushrooms at all costs. Finally, simply use an all out PSI Offence on the Trillionage Sprout, and any weapons Jeff may have. Beware his evil glare!"

  392. Goal: Get to Saturn Valley!
  393. 5/1/2024
  394.
  395. "Now it's time for the underground road. After the ghosts, zombies, flies, and boss, you get the honour of going through more zombies, crocodiles, frogs, and antoids before you finally get to Saturn Valley. Once you've made it, enjoy the numerous free amenities before saving your game."
  396.
  397. Today's Challenges:
  398. - No PSI for the whole GPP.
  399. - Fight 10 Frogs (notice the first challenge).
  400. - Talk to all the (accessible) Mr. Saturns in less than 1 minute.
  401. - Buy everything in the Mr. Saturn shop. Especially the Bionic Slingshot.
  402. - Fight a Duck in Saturn Valley... Yes, it is possible.
  403.
  404. Today's Fun Fact:
  405. "The Mr. Saturn language is just as goofy in Mother 2 (can cause trouble for certain translators). It's actually based on how Itoi's daughter's writing at the time. Also, a Mr. Saturn is "Doseisan", in Japan. That basically means Mr. Saturn. However, WHAT they're saying exactly remains a mystery."
  406.
  407. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  408. "Once you get to Saturn Valley, you'll see that there are many useful items and weapons.
  409. One of the best items is the Peanut Cheese bars. They're very cheap, and replenish over 100 hp! Any food recovering items you currently have should be sold, in order to make room for these tasty things.
  410. And finally, don't purchase the Bionic Slingshot. Yo yo's and Slingshots always miss when you need a good hit. Plus they have no SMAAAAAASH! attacks. They aren't worth it. Unless, of course, you're doing the challenge, in which case by all means, take Slingshots aplenty! It's also a moot point if Jeff's fixed the Broken item by now"

  420. Goal: Stop the Zombies!
  421. 4/30/2024
  422.
  423. "All rested up? Great. Keep on going to Dr. Andonut's Lab; you'll lose Bubble Monkey en route, but it's not like he ever did more than 2 damage anyway. Take a ride on the Sky Runner, fight the Boogey Tent, and stick it to the zombies with the Zombie Paper. Then it'll be time to save your game again."
  424.
  425. Today's Challenge:
  426. - Fight 5 Cave Boys (Here are the guidelines; no Cheap Bracelet, and you can only heal yourself with ITEMS).
  427. - Get Jeff at least 5 levels ahead of Ness before the end of the GPP.
  428. - When in Threed, have only Paula and Jeff attack any enemies. Ness will just defend.
  429. - When fighting Boogey Tent, try a battle like this: Only Jeff can attack (not using a big bottle rocket), but Paula can use Pray and Defend, and Ness can defend/use shields on Jeff.
  430. - Did you manage to keep both Jeff and Paula at level 1? Great! Now see if you can get both of them to live through the Boogey Tent battle. Mwa ha ha!
  431.
  432. Today's Fun Fact:
  433. "Another name change. Makes sense though. Labo is lab, and lab is presumably labo. Lobo means wolf in Spanish, so don't confuse the two."
  434.
  435. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  436. "As you continue through Winters you're going to encounter those legendary cave boys. Even if you don't have the proper equipment to fight them, you'll have a very good chance of running away from them. They seem to be very clumsy, and will miss hitting you rather often. But if you do defeat them, you're garanteed a Picnic Lunch. Once in Threed, the Boogey Tent is rather easy. An all out PSI attack, and Jeffs bombs/bottle rockets will make short work of the ghoulish tent. Physical attacks won't be as effective since it can use PSI Flash and make you cry. Another trick is to leave the gift box in Dr. Andonut's Lab behind; it's got a Broken Pipe in it, which Jeff won't be able to fix for a while, and it just becomes the Shield Killer anyway, which is a pretty lousy item. The Neutralizer works a lot better."

  445. 4/28/2024
  446.
  447. "There's not much to do in Threed, but we'll do it anyway. Get checked out by the zombies in the graveyard, then check in with the creepy lady at the hotel. After you wake up and switch to Jeff, make your way through Winters until you get through Brickroad's maze, then call Maxwell Labs and save. I don't know where you're going to sleep, though..."
  448.
  449. Today's Challenges:
  450. - Get both Ness and Paula possessed, and keep them that way for as long as possible.
  451. - Patrol the streets of Threed and fight all enemies that are sitting in the road. Yell, "Die, freako Belch minion!" each time you get into a fight. Do this until Ness's dad calls, and then yell "WHO YA GONNA CALL?!" before answering the phone.
  452. - Purchase the T-Rex Bat.
  453. - Don't steal the Cookies.
  454. - Don't equip the Pop Gun.
  455. - Fight 5 Worthless Protoplasms in one battle.
  456. - Avoid or run from every battle in Winters so that Jeff is level 1 when he reaches Threed.
  457.
  458. Today's Fun Fact:
  459. "Here's an obvious change. Threed, is really Threek. You can see this in old issues of Nintendo Power, and I believe in the player's guide. Why was it changed? I dunno. Maybe Threed looks more "American" or something."
  460.
  461. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  462. "When in Winters be sure to collect everything you can from the lockers, and the cookies in the boy's room. Once you're out in the field, see if you can collect Bread Rolls from Runaway Dogs. If they happen to attack you, eat a cookie to recover. You should have a good chance of winning a Bread Roll every so often, so replace your Cookies with Bread Rolls. Finally, once you reach Brickroad's Dungeon, seek out all the presents. All of them are useful, especially the Stun Gun. Ditch your Pop Gun if you have to in order to get this weapon."

  473. "It's sanctuary time again! The caves leading up to Lilliput Steps are a great place for Paula to gain some levels. But maybe you're one of those crazy people who gets the melodies out of order, in which case you don't have to do this right now. (Psycho.) Once you're done with Mondo Mole, head back to Twoson, get the Runaway Five out of their phony contract, and save when you get to Threed."
  474.
  475. Today's Challenges:
  476. - Can you win a Teddy Bear from the Mighty Bear?
  477. - Keep Paula alive for the entire GPP.
  478. - Alternatively, let Paula die off, then walk around Twoson and talk to important people like Everdred, Paula's parents, and the Runaway Five. It's not really a challenge per se, but it's neat to see the different messages, and a future challenge will involve having Paula at level 1.
  479. - Keep Paula's Teddy Bear "alive".
  480. - Don't use Paralysis on the Mondo Mole.
  481. - Beat Mondo Mole with Paula at Level 1 and have her alive at the end of the battle.
  482.
  483. Today's Fun Fact:
  484. "One relatively large difference between Mother 2 and EB is the Tonzura Brothers/Runaway Five. Tonzura essentially means "escape", or in this case "Runaway". So it should really be the Runaway Brothers. If you're not much of a moviegoer, this is a pretty direct reference to the Blues Brothers. Also, notice how all their costumes are black instead of different colors. This was probably because Nintendo wanted to avoid copyright issues again. Nevertheless, this explains the eerie 6th member of the Runaway Five, since "Five" is really supposed to be "Brothers"."
  485.
  486. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  487. "When you enter the Lilliput Steps Cave, you're going to want to find the Great Charm. This will increase both Luck and Defense. You may want to give it to Paula due to her current weakness. If you happen to encounter Mighty Bears, the best way to defeat them is with PSI Freeze, and a bash with a Ness's bat. Finally, when you reach the Mondo Mole, and want to defeat him easily (and cheaply), simply use Paralysis on him. If you don't do this, however, he is easily one of the hardest bosses in the game."

  499.
  500. Today's Challenges:
  501. - Don't steal eggs. It's wrong. If you need Eggs, pay at least 110 dollars for them. In otherwords, don't buy from that basket. :)
  502. - Fight 20 Happy Happyists in one battle. However, you can't have either the Hard Hat, or the Copper Bracelet equipped.
  503. - Don't use any PSI against Carpainter. This includes healing PSI.
  504. - Donate all your money to that annoying lady. Do it two dollars at a time until your inventory is full of Picture Postcards.
  505. - Fill Paula's inventory entirely with cookies you win from Spiteful Crows.
  506. - Fight 10 coil snakes.
  507. - Get Paula to level 10 by fighting crows outside the cabin. Don't go into the cave until she's at level 10.
  508.
  509. Today's Fun Fact?:
  510. "Here's an interesting change. Well, as you can see with the Happy Happyists, the "HH" mark is erased, and there's a fluffy ball at the end of the hat. I guess that makes it less evil or something."
  511.
  512. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  513. "Stealing and overkill are the key hints for today's GPP. As you know, Happy Happy Village has many people roaming around. These cultists are the key to gaining massive amounts of EXP. In order to do this, you're going to want to have the HARD HAT from Peaceful Rest Valley. Equip the Copper Bracelet, and the Sandlot Bat as well. You also may want a few recovery items. Next, engage a Happy Happyist. They only have two attacks; their weak paint attack, which only does 4 or so HP damage, and calling for help. Hit the HH once, and then defend until he calls for help. Finish off the one you were hitting, and then hit the other Happyist once. Continue to defend until they sucessfully call for help. Keep repeating this cycle. You'll end up going halfway through the alphabet, and then back to "A". Doing this cycle a few times is a fast and very easy way of gaining at least 3 levels.
  514. Next is the old egg stealing trick. This is more time consuming however. If you can empty your inventory by giving your important items to Escargo Express, fill up your backpack with stolen eggs from the basket. The eggs will eventually turn into chickens that you can sell for $110. Really easy money. But you won't be able to do this once you defeat Carpainter."

  526.
  527. Today's Challenges:
  528. - Spend ALL your money so you have $0 in your account and on hand.
  529. - Invest in Orange Kid. The full $200. No waiting until he lowers his price. Then use the Super Orange Machine instead of selling it.
  530. - Stay "Mashroomized" through the whole GPP.
  531. - Collect 10 toothbrushes.
  532. - Earn $1000 in five minutes (NO SELLING ANY KIND OF POULTRY!)
  533. - Fill your inventory with teddy bears. Get rid of all non-essential items like food or other one-use items.
  534.
  535. Today's Fun Fact:
  536. "One change in EarthBound is the Squid-Pencil statue change. You can find this change in your player's guide (page 44 for example), or old Nintendo Powers that review EarthBound. Essentially, Octopus, was replaced with a Pencil. For example, in Mother 2, Apple Kid tells you not to use the "Octopus Erasing Machine" near a shop that sells octopi (or statues thereof). There's not really much more to try to explain since the whole thing doesn't make sense."
  537.
  538. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  539. "There's a lot of tricks and neat things you can do to make your journey from Twoson to Happy Happy Village a lot easier. First of all, hit up the guy at the Hotel for the cash. Actually you'll have to do it several times, but it's an easy $50.
  540. Second, if you find yourself "Mashroomized", just flip the controller (or GBA) around until it suits a favorable direction so you can go and get yourself healed. Don't do this if you're doing the challenges though. It'll take the fun out of it.
  541. Finally, if you have a Teddy Bear, taking it to a Hotel, or other recovery place with you, will heal it's HP as well as yours. Really!"

  548. GamePlay Point (GPP) #4:
  549. Goal: Get to Twoson!
  550. 4/24/2024
  551.
  552. "Congratulations. You've gained the power of Giant Step, but now you've been busted by the fuzz for not reading the signs. So head and over to the police station and prepare yourself for a mighty chewing. Perhaps while you're there you can convince the police to clear the roadblock to Twoson. If you can manage to make your way south to the next town then save your game and take a break."
  553.
  554. Today's Challenges:
  555. - Only use one recovery item.
  556. - Don't use Life-up.
  557. - And don't use your PSI Special power.
  558. - Purchase the seaside house before you leave Onett. It's only $7500 :P
  559.
  560. Today's Fun Fact:
  561. "Although there aren't many more visual changes in Onett, there is a small one with the hospital (and all the hospitals). The Onett Hospital used to have a red cross. But Nintendo of America dubbed it out with some small text."
  562.
  563. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  564. "Knowing when to use your items is key in EarthBound. You're going to want to use your recovery items when you're fighting these zealous cops. But if you use a recovery item too soon, you've not only wasted a turn for an attack, but the recovery potential of your food item. So, if you want to win this battle easily, stock up on Hamburgers, and once your HP is around 30, eat a burger! When you reach Captain Strong, an all out PSI Special attack will be most effective. And when the battle is all over, don't forget to see Frank so you can recover."

  571. GamePlay Point (GPP) #3:
  572. Goal: Visit "Giant Step" and record the melody!
  573. 4/23/2024
  574.
  575. "So you beat up Frank and the Sharks. Well good on you, but it's not over yet. Far from it. Now you must procure a certain key from a certain Mayor and work your way to the Giant Step Sanctuary. Afterwards you must endure a harsh yelling from a policeman before you can save your game for the day. So remember to save after you come from Giant Step or else you'll go too far."
  576.
  577. Today's Challenges:
  578. - Only get surprise-attacked.
  579. - Don't use the magic butterflies.
  580. - Defeat Titanic Ant at level 7 or less.
  581. - Don't use Life-Up.
  582. - Let all Attack Slugs concentrate before you start attacking them.
  583.
  584. Today's Fun Fact:
  585. "Here's a strange difference in the game. That red truck that you see every once in a while doesn't have that little man on it, but rather something that looks like the Coca-Cola logo. That was the most probable reason Nintendo changed that; copyright issues. Or it just plain doesn't make sense (but lots of stuff in EB doesn't)."
  586.
  587. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  588. "Another leveling tip. It's relatively easy to gain levels in Giant Step. It's just hard to do it at first. The key to leveling up easily is getting to where you are outside of the cave again, but one level below giant step. This is where the Magic Butterfly is. Healing yourself while going in and out fighting enemies will get you levels safely, and quickly. And if you really want to get a lot of EXP., go in and out of the cave until you see a whole hoard of attack slugs. Then just give 'em a dose of your PSI Special power. Yum, roasted slug."

  595. GamePlay Point (GPP) #2:
  596. Goal: Defeat The Sharks leader to save Onett!
  597. 4/21/2024
  598.
  599. "Thanks to Buzz Buzz's premature death, you're on your own now. Head into the suburbs and wander around for a bit, then get ready - you're going to have to fight Frank, the boss of the Sharks. Once you've flattened Frankystein, save your game."
  600.
  601. Today's Challenges:
  602. - Don't equip the Mr. Baseball Hat, or Cheap Bracelet.
  603. - Can you get a Pizza from a Skate Punk?
  604. - How about a Bag of Fries from a Yes Man Junior?
  605. - Defeat Frank before you reach level 5.
  606. - Only use Cookies and Juice for recovery items.
  607. - Sell all your other food items and use only Lucky Sandwiches to recover.
  608. - No Lifeup, either.
  609.
  610. Today's Fun Fact:
  611. "Remember how if you talk to Pokey after he's punished ("No dessert for the rest of the decade")? Instead of that, he says that his "butt hurts". This suggests that he's been spanked.
  612. Finally, the goofy Beatles quiz "XXXterday", was really the following in Mother 2: "The girl from the Alps named OOdi". You would fill the OO with hai (yes) or iie (no). I think it's that girl named "Heidi". Was that from a movie or something?"
  613.
  614. Today's HINT MAN Moment:
  615. "The hints for today's GPP aren't as remarkable as the last one, but they're helpful nonetheless. As you can see, hiding behind objects is the key when trying to avoid enemies of this size. And if your levels are low before you fight the Sharks, and you want to raise them easily, you'll probably want to fight the "preset" enemies first. These include the two Shark members outside of the arcade, and the ones inside. If you fight these first, random enemies won't quickly run into the scene. This is a pretty basic tip, but for those of you new to the game, you loose half of it when you die. This is similar to many RPGs. Still, there's nothing worse than losing your hard-earned cash just because you have deep pockets."

  622. GamePlay Point (GPP) #1:
  623. Goal: Get the Sound Stone from the (totally fine) Buzz Buzz
  624. 4/20/2024
  625.
  626. "First things first. It's the most important part of the game: naming your characters. Will you name them after yourself? Your friends? Your favourite celebrities? Or just flip through a name book and pick some at random? Or there's always that wacky "Don't Care" option for you apathetic folks.
  627.
  628. Now it's time to get back in the game! Wake up, check out the meteorite, fight Starman Jr., and get the Sound Stone from Buzz Buzz. Then go home and save your game."
  629.
  630. Today's Challenges:
  631. -No fights all the way up the hill and back. Just keep running, Forrest.
  632. -Don't enlist King's (the dog) help.
  633. -Don't equip the Cracked Bat. It's only 4 measly offense points.
  634. -If you're doing any or all these challenges, don't go back to your mom for food.
  635.
  636. Today's Fun Fact:
  637. "The most noticeable change in the beginning of Mother 2, is the title screen compared to the EarthBound screen we know and love. The music is still the same however. The text next to "MOTHER 2" is (roughly translated) " Giigu's Counterattack". Giigu, is just as evil and bad as the American Giygas. Other changes in this Game Play point are things such as the Bread Roll being a Butter roll (you can see this in the Player's Guide too). Also, Liar X Agerate, is known as Liar Holland in MOTHER 2. This concludes today's factoid lesson!"
  638.
  639. Today's HINT MAN moment:
  640. "Today's hint for the starting of the game is rather clever. Avid EB fans in the group know how tight space can get, and how hard it is to part with that bread roll that's taking up space, or being forced to use that PSI Caramel when you're only missing one PP. But this tip will give you that one extra spot you've always needed. If you stock up on items from enemies before Buzz Buzz is killed (like cookies from Spiteful Crows), Buzz Buzz will give the Sound Stone to your sister. Usually, the game makes you keep the stone the entire time. But now you have that new space! Not too shabby."

  650. Challenges for THE ENTIRE EVENT:
  651. "Here are a few challenges that will last throughout the whole game for those wanting more things to do. Will you be able to do these, and keep up with the GPPs?"
  652. -Go through the whole game without life-up and/or healing PSI.
  653. -Don't ever use the ATM. Or even more challenging, don't ever spend ANY money (unless forced to).
  654. -Use the ATM as much as possible so you always have a zero balance. Why? Because you lose half your cash when you die.
  655. -Get into as FEW fights as possible. Try counting them to see how you can measure up to others.
  656. -Only use physical attacks.
  657. -Only use PSI to attacks.
  658. -Always get surprised attacked by enemies.
  659. -Use the green phones whenever you can. It's only a dollar a call, you know.
  660. -Get as few pictures as possible from that stupid camera man.
  661. -Get all the 1/128 items.
  662. "Obviously you can't do all of those challenges since they conflict with each other. But if you don't want to stress out the whole game trying to do the preceding tasks, there's always the daily challenges that you can try out for a different gameplay experience."
