85.
86. 3.1 Using the information you have included above, combined with your own experiences and qualities, provide a thorough article as to why you wish to be chosen to be a member of the Sergeant Team:
87.
88. Since the day I was inducted into the Los Santos Police Department I had the aspirations to follow the Sergeant's path. The reason why I waited with my application in the previous two drives is because I felt I required more experience within the Department, and I do not like to rush big decisions.
89.
90. In my previous employment as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, I was an Infantry Unit Leader (MOS 0369). Within this function, I learned that teamwork and leadership go hand in hand. I mostly deal with a "give respect and receive respect" basis, as respect is something I focus on greatly and try to maintain with each colleague.
91.
92. Respect is something that is crucial for a good relationship between a, in this case, a supervisor and officers. Once respect is established, it creates a bond between people, where you can achieve a better understanding of one and another. This is something that helped me greatly in my previous employment, out in the field but also in personal relations.
93. Besides that, I try to maintain a clear vision upon the daily occurrences I encounter as a Police Officer. This can differ from each situation, but I try to uphold the same high level of understanding to each and every one of them.
94.
95. As a Police Supervisor, you get much more on your plate than a regular officer. I feel I am ready and capable of taking this challenge up, and improve myself along the way. I see this opportunity not only for a way to reach my own goals, but also an opportunity to give my part towards others, aiding them in achieving their personal goals in their career.
96. Being eligible to apply for the Sergeant Team, motivates me, even more, to strive for my personal development, to learn every day. This is something I have been focussed on for the past few months, taking up personal challenges, trying to give the ultimate of my abilities towards the Department and the citizens of Los Santos.
97.
98. 3.2 Detail THREE key qualities and skills that would make you a valuable Sergeant.
99.
100. Although most processes are handled by forethought and pre-planned steps, this differs greatly in the work field of a Law Enforcement Officer. Therefore is intuition one of the key skills I am most aware of, and is being used on day to day basis.
101. Even though intuition means acting or understanding something without the need for conscious reasoning, your judgement is influenced by your prior experience.
102. This is something I focus on every day, trying to improve every bit of it. Split-second decisions are made numerous times during your shift, where numerous factors come into play. Dangerous environments, officer safety, public safety, you name it.
103. And I feel I have control, but primarily faith in the decisions I make, that they are the right one and deliver the best possible outcome in the situation at hand. Hence why I am alway focussed on improving this.
104.
105. Next to this, discipline is one of the qualities I must name. A structure without discipline is no structure, hence why I am even more motivated to strive for a great discipline within a work environment.
106. This is perfectly portrayed within the Department by the rank structure which we work under. Some people see discipline as a bad thing, seeing it as some way to have control over people. But in the right hands, it is a tool not to "have" control, but to maintain it in a civilised manner.
107. At the moment, this is perfectly portrayed by the current state of the Department. I feel we have reached a point where there is more balance within the team than ever, which makes us one of the strongest teams out there. May it be due to recent events and changes, or maybe due to the long run, it is something I'm proud of being a part of.
108.
109. Even though there are many qualities and skills I can choose for, confidence is the third quality in this list. Even though you have trained for months or know the books in and out, if you do not have confidence, and show confidence, this will reflect in your work, and ultimately onto the people working with you. As Marcus Garvey once said, and this quote stuck to me:"If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life".
110. This can be seen in a lot of aspect of the work as a Sergeant. From dealing with simple situations such as a traffic stop due to a traffic infraction, up to large scale incidents where you have command over multiple ground units, having to coordinate them around as efficiently as possible whilst aiming for the best possible outcome of said situation.
111.
112.
113.
114. 3.3 List the vital skills required to be a distinguished and exemplary Sergeant.
115.
116. One of the important skills that are required would be good leadership.
117. When holding the function of Sergeant, you are expected to give lead to multiple officers, aiding them with providing a good working environment whilst upholding the Department's policies.
118. Being a leader consists of ensuring the most profitable outcome is generated through the correct way.
119. This can be in the field on a scene where multiple units are present, for example in a search for a suspect, to managing TAC's, making sure it is organized.
120. This goes in hand with good coordinating. Being able to manage resources in a way it's beneficial for all parties involved.
121.
122. Another skill that I have mentioned before is teamwork. A team is a strong as it's weakest link, hence why it is important a Sergeant is able to work effectively within a team.
123. This can be in the supervisory team, or referring to the team with the officers of lower ranks. \
124. without teamwork this Department wouldn't be in the state it is now.
125. Along with these skills, flexibility is also very important whilst being a Sergeant.
126. You are expected to adapt to each situation and act accordingly. This can be premeditated actions, or have to be last-minute decisions you have to make. With these decisions, you need to be prepared for the changes that come along with it.
127. Being open for feedback is also important. As it's a very variable working environment, receiving feedback and acting on it is important as it paves the way to improve the department, and the way it works.
128.
129.
130. 3.4 A Sergeant within the Police Department holds considerable responsibility over the officers under their assigned patrol. Explain your stance on being in that position of power.
131.
132. Since I became a Traffic Inspector within the Traffic Division, I have learned to adjust to being in a higher position, holding responsability over a squad consisting of about 8-12 officers. I have learned to cope with dealing with traffic-related supervision. This can be whilst overseeing an MVA investigation being done, a Traffic Operation, a department-wide operation or handling exams, collision reports or monitoring the general activity of the division, trying to make adjustments and steer people into the correct way.
133.
134. I try to uphold this position whilst being at the same level as my traffic officers. I deal on a give and get respect basis, as I feel we need to be a team. This has created a good bond between me and my fellow officers. They respect my function, but also know they can contact me personally for any reason or just a general talk.
135.
136. 3.5 A Sergeant within the Police Department is assigned a patrol holding officers, with duties including promotion assessments, field training moderation and management of the officers under their patrol. Explain why it is important for the Sergeant to conduct these duties and the implications involved in failing them.
137.
138. Upholding these tasks are mainly in place to have a well-coordinated team. As teamwork is one of the key elements that keeps this department up to it's standards, it's very important all aspects of it are handled appropiately through the right procedures.
139. As a Sergeant you are being a link within the Department which acts like a bridge between the Patrol Officers and Command and Staff. You are expected to guide these officers through their service, helping people who are looking to improve themselves, people who are also aiming to grow within the Department.
140. If I get the opportunity to enroll in the Sergeant Team and assigned a patrol, I am eager to offer my time to each officer that is assigned to me. I'm willing to be in touch with these officers, trying to help them and answer their questions if they require any assistance.
141. I'm focussed on the end goal, which for me, is ensuring this Department lives up to it's standards, and the citizens of Los Santos get the best service they can.
142.
143.
144. 3.6 Select a subject regarding policy, procedure or structure within the Police Department (a suggestion, on-going issue, or trivial dispute). Outline your understanding on the topic of your choice, and how you would facilitate it's implementation or change.
145.
146. One issue that has always been around is the lack of response to less severe calls.
147. This can be seen daily, with different calls. Such calls can be a transport request for a suspect, an additional unit call at an investigation, but mostly the non-emergency phone calls we get.
148. A lot of calls get left out because people are aimed at only going for action-packed calls, as they do not like to handle calls of non-emergency situations, such as stolen vehicles.
149.
150. Besides that, the more important calls from our fellow officers also do not receive the care they require.
151. I've seen multiple calls come by where an unit requests another unit for cover on, for example, a traffic stop. This call then gets ignored, and it has happened that this traffic stop turned out into either a pursuit, or a shoot-out, resulting in officer injuries.
152. Especially when it's regarding our own units, it's very important we give more care to these calls, and always ensure an unit is dispatched to these calls.
153. In my opinion, the best way is that supervisory units focus more on these calls, and once one comes in, assign units to it directly. This has been applied in the past, which has shown that this is effective.
154. I'm applying this myself within the Traffic Division. Once a Traffic related call comes in, I immediately request all units to report in with their location and status, dispatching the unit that's the closest to the original call. This has greatly improved our response time, which results in less Department resources being wasted.
155.
156.
157. 3.7 Select one supervisor or leader in the Police Department and explain what makes them an admirable leader.
158.
159. Even though I have a good relation with several supervisors within the Department, for this question I must go for Police Sergeant II Wade Brooks. Several months ago he was elected to be the new Commanding Officer of our Traffic Division, which I am a member of Command of. Even though we had several applicants, once I read his application, I instantly noticed he is a dedicated person.
160. This shown throughout the time he served as a Commanding Officer, as he turned the whole Division around, taking it on himself to improve every little bit of the division.
161. But not only that, the thing that intrigued me the most is how team-driven W. Brooks is. Every decision he made, he first checked with each of his members, ensuring we came to the best solution that was possible and applicable.
162. Besides being part of the Traffic Division, he also devotes his time to the Metropolitan Division, which reflects onto his divisions. I am proud of serving along with W. Brooks, and have taken him up as my role model since I've come in touch with him. He can have a stern approach on situations, but in the back of my head I know he is doing it so it's beneficial for the officer in question.
