  1. Bassam Adeel Jaleel is a Maldivian public figure and the current President of Football Association of Maldives. He was elected President of FAM in an election held in November 2016.
  2. Early Life
  3. Bassam Adeel Jaleel was born in Malé, Maldives, to a Political family. President Maumoon Abdul Gayom and President Yameen Abdul Gayoom are his Uncles from his father Adeel Jaleel side as his grandmother is Moominaa Abdul Gayoom. His Mother is Latheefa Adam from Ma. Giriteege. He attended Iskandar School and Majeediyya School in Maldives for his Primary and Secondary Education between 1989 and 2000. He graduated in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Business Administration from University of East London in 2010.

Bassam played football from young age, he was in under 11 football Team of Iskandar School, under 14, under 16, Majeedhiya School Football Team and was selected for under 19 National Team as well. Bassam’s Father Adeel Jaleel is one of the founder members of Club Valencia. Bassam Played for Club Valencia and was Vice-Chair of Club Valencia.
  5. Bassam is keen on Business studies and Economics and worked in Maldives Central Bank known as Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) as a manager prior to his career in Foot Bal Association of Maldives.

  8. Before being elected as President of Football Association of Maldives, Bassam served as the General Secretary of the organization. He was also the Vice-Chairman of a local football club, Club Valencia.
  9. Maldives National Football team was at its maturity when Bassam got elected in 2016, and since he has focused on hiring the best possible coaches, arranging best facilities, training camps and allowances for National team. He was able to facilitate a transition of National Team from senor team players to a well-trained young squad in three years
  10. In 2018, the Maldives national football team won the first SAFF Championship, it is the second time National Football team won it and whole country rejoiced it. But this time it was after 10 years since they won it in 2008.
  11. And also for the first time in history Under 18 National Team won bronze in SAFF Under 18 championship in his tenure.
  12. With a slogan of “Towards Future” Bassam has created 8 FAM Football Academies in 8 different zones in Maldives for youth, women and children of different age groups.
  13. Bassam has initiated building different Infrastructure for Football with the support of FIFA and AFC in Maldives. And for the first time to boost the quality of the National league Bassam arranged financial support of the teams. And last three years a lot of local players and Coaches has been given opportunity to travel abroad and improve their standings and get additional training and licenses.

  15. The Maldives women's national football team was first formed in 2003. The team represents Maldives international women's football team. Bassam has given a lot of importance to improving Maldives National Women’s Football Team in his tenure and they won BRONZE medal in the 13th South Asian Games in December 2019. It’s the biggest achievement in the history of Women’s Football.

  18. Bassam is married to Maldivian television personality, Aminath Maureena, commonly known as Maureen. He has two children Alavi Bassam Adeel, Zaharaa Bassam Adeel. He is a football fanatic and loves Beatles Music and loves reading and travelling.
