  1. Boy named "Shoe"
  2.
  3. Well my daddy left home when I was three
  4. And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
  5. Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze
  6. Now, I don't blame him 'cause he run and hid
  7. But the meanest thing that he ever did
  8. Was before he left, he went and named me "Shoe"
  9. Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
  10. And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk
  11. It seems I had to fight my whole life through
  12. Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
  13. And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head
  14. I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Shoe"
  15. Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean
  16. My fist got hard and my wits got keen
  17. Roam from town to town to hide my shame
  18. But I made me a vow to the moon and stars
  19. I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
  20. And kill that man who gave me that awful name
  21. Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
  22. And I just hit town and my throat was dry
  23. I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew
  24. At an old saloon on a street of mud
  25. There at a table, dealing stud
  26. Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Shoe"
  27. Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
  28. From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had
  29. And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye
  30. He was big and bent and gray and old
  31. And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
  32. And I said: "My name is 'Shoe!' How do you do!?
  33. Now you gonna die!"
  34. Yeah that's what I told 'em
  35. Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
  36. And he went down, but to my surprise
  37. He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear
  38. But I busted a chair right across his teeth
  39. And we crashed through the wall and into the street
  40. Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer
  41. I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
  42. But I really can't remember when
  43. He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile
  44. I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss
  45. He went for his gun and I pulled mine first
  46. He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile
  47. And he said, "Son, this world is rough
  48. And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
  49. And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along
  50. So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
  51. I knew you'd have to get tough or die
  52. And it's the name that helped to make you strong"
  53. Yeah he said, "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
  54. And I know you hate me, and you got the right
  55. To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do
  56. But ya ought to thank me, before I die
  57. For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
  58. 'Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Shoe"
  59. Yeah what could I do, what could I do
  60. I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
  61. Called him my Pa, and he called me his son
  62. And I come away with a different point of view
  63. And I think about him, now and then
  64. Every time I try and every time I win
  65. And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
  66. Bill or George! Anything but Shoe! I still hate that name! Yeah
