  1. Snow crunched beneath his malnourished frame. it fell thick on his auburn coat, dusting it. The bitter breeze was apparent shifting throughout his body.. His eyes scanned the land around him,
  2. Glazed with anxiety. Wolves played and talked peacefully, free in their actions. However as he watched he couldn't help but feel isolated. He was on the cusp of adulthood yet he worried like a child
  3. A sudden shove came, then a soft thud. He looked to see a white wolf blending in with the snowy haze amber rings looking back at him
  4. “Come on I told you about this,” Pine let out a sigh upon getting up.
  5. “Pine can’t you have a little bit of fun, come on,” Blue said
  6. “Its not that i don’t want to have fun, its that you always are surprising me,”
  7. “I mean, it's fun to have a little suprize, the other wolves love it,”
  8. “Well it sure doesn’t for me,”
  9. “Come on,” He brushed snow in his face with his paw.
  10. Pine let out a small smile “Ok, fine,” Pine started to brush snow and Blue did so back, they laughed with each other,
  11. “See Pine, I told you it's fun!”
  12. “Yeah, it is” Pine said, laughing then opun brushing again. Snow hit the blues face like a full force. His eyes stinged with the cold hitting his eyes. He let out a yell sharp among the quiet hush of winter. In his blindness hitting Pine. Pines, cheek stinged with the aftermath of his sharp paws.
  13. “See Blue this is why i don’t do this,” Pine said
  14. “You got it in my eye,” Blue growled
  15. “Well you shouldn't just lash out like that”
  16. He growled again “Shut up pine,” His one ear perked up, harsh words echoed thought out the quiet landscape
  17.
  18. Blue gave out a sigh “You two *again*? He said
  19. The two wolves looked at him with a glare like no other then they looked at pine
  20. “Oh hey pine, didn’t know you were here.” The Blackish-brown wolf smiled,
  21. “May I ask why you two were fighting?” Pine qusetioned
  22. “You shouldn't worry about it too much younger brother, its not that big of a deal,” He looked over at the other wolf “He just likes fighting,” He laughed
  23. “Don’t be rude,” The wolf said “Come on root,”
  24. Root chuckled “Well your always the one who talks my ear off when i get something ‘wrong’”
  25. “Yeah right, What do you think Pine?”
  26. “I can explain, don’t worry,” The three all started to talk about hunting tacics, The rambling and debate between them Blue looked at Pine, at his mouth moving, at his expressions everything. A slight smirk came to his face, and a listening ear to his words.
  27. “Thanks Pine, Helped settle another one of our bickering fits” Root,
  28. “Yeah, we always do” the other wolf laughed,
  29. “You should go on a hunt with us sometime you always seem to know what to do,” root said
  30. “Sorry i don’t like hunting,” Pine said
  31. “Ah ok, Well i hope you do one day,” they said walking off chuckling to themselves
  32. “Nice job” He said giving him a playful nip on his ear “My pissy self would have just yelled at them,”
  33. “Come on Blue, I’m not *that good*” Pine said giving a playfully shy glare
  34. “Shut up You did great,” Blue said. “Now come on, let's try again,” Blue said, brushing snow into his face. Pine let out a gasp then shoved snow back laughing all the way.

  39. Chapter 2:
  40. A single ear heard the wisping winds of winter blow through it. The grey skies above them covering the glaring sun to come, a smile ran across his face, his body ready to attack. Trying to hold back laugher he striked, then a thud came, and the crunch of snow
  41. “Blue come on, can you at least give me a warning,” He said getting up and shaking himself off,
  42. Blue let out a chuckle “You did never like surprises do you?”
  43. “No, I don’t, You always seem to play ruff.”
  44. “But Pine, it teaches you how to fight, and to hunt,”
  45. “Well, I don’t like fighting and hunting, I just like making the plans,”
  46. “Dad always did say you were weak,” He said snidey
  47. “Why did he say That” Pines said
  48. “Let me see here, You don’t know a thing about fighting or hunting, Nor socializing even, You just sit there and do nothing,” He said looking at him with a sharp glare
  49. “Blue, I-”
  50. “At Least i’m *Doing* something, You know your father is about to pick the next leader to train right?”
  51. “Yeah, I know,”
  52. “I’m sorry for getting mad Pine, I just, I don’t want to see you die,”
  53. “I’m not gonna die thought,”
  54. “Yeah, I hope so” Blue thought for a second then laughed “I’d make a better leader, Heres a perfect idea maybe we could lead together,”
  55. “I don ‘t think dad would allow that,”
  56. “Well, Yeah,” Blue said disappointed “But please get stronger, I need you here… Ok?”
  57. He said walking off into the snowy haze, every crunch marked pine anxiety, He looked back, then ahead. Pine couldn't help but feel torn,
  58. “Son.” A black wolf said. “I need to speak with you,” Pine looked like a pup compared to him,
  59. His black fur standing out among the snowy haze.
  60. “What is it father?” Pine said politely
  61. “Walk with me, walk with me.”
  62. They started to walk slowly, the snow crunched heavily under his feet. Yet pine’s trailed behind
  63. “Now son, I understand you don’t want to be a leader, why is that?” He said calmly and without emotion.
  64. “I… I don’t know, I just don’t feel like I can, father.”
  65. “And why do you think that is,”
  66. He shook with anxiety, “Because i don’t do anything,”
  67. “Yes son, however, You have your wits about you like all these other wolves don;t,”
  68. “Doesn’t Blue have his wits about him? Why can’t he be the leader?”
  69. His father looked at pine then back at the snowy mountains “I know this pack all to well, even better than you my son, and i know that he can not do it,”
  70. “But why father?”
  71. He stopped for a moment, his pause of silence amplifying the wind in his ears, and his anxiety “I’m making you leader,”
  72. Pine’s fur stiffened with anxiety “but why? I don’t wanna to be leader,”
  73. His father gave him a glare “Don’t speak to me that way, You will follow my orders as told”
  74. “But…”
  75. His eyes were like the void, staring right back at him. Pine could see his fear stricken face shining back at him. “Don’t test me boy,” He growled
  76. Pine put his ears and looked down “Yes, father,”
  77. His father looked ahead again, “You will start your training in the spring, Be ready when I tell you too,” His father said walking away into the misty winter, ever more until he became a black dot.
  78. Pine huffed, his fear and anxiety coming out in a misty breath
  79.
  80.
  81. Chapter 3:
  82. Trees budded with the warmth of the sun, its loving rays giving colors throughout the land, the snow melting slowly, every drip from the fresh water giving life to the land, grass growing in patches of green. The suns golden light was peaceful, the birds chirped with joy as they basked
  83. A sudden yell came out of the woods the flapping of wings and birds moving in aimless dictions cut thought the quiet
  84. “Attack!” Pines father yelled
  85. The tall wolf in front of him looked at him with his big eyes, staring him down just like his father,
  86. Tall and imposing was his standure. Yet he stood ready.
  87. “You must learn!” He barked orders “Now *do* it!”
  88. Pine rushed in with poor form, and ran with a flail, he nipped at him softly like he still had his milk bone teeth, he looked up at the wolf then his father.
  89. “I can’t do this, I don’t want to hurt people,”
  90. “You can learn to defend yourself,” He let out a growl “*Do it again boy!*”
  91. “I don’t want to hurt anybody thought, please don’t make me do this”
  92. “You will listen to me boy, Don’t test me”
  93. “Don’t make me do this, Please,”
  94. “No, You will,” He bared his teeth “Now *Attack*”
  95. “Dad please,” Pine said his body shaking
  96. A sudden burning of claws hitting flesh hit pine’s face, the warm of blood falling down his fur as he fell over on the ground he looked at his father with tears in his eyes and he looked at him with angry glare.
  97. “Next time will be worst boy,” He said walking away
  98.
  99. Pine’s hurting eyes looked to see a white wolf, his friend. He looked at him with pity,
  100. “Your father knows your weak, And i do to,”
  101. “Blue, I really don’t want to be leader, He’s making me hurt people,”
  102. “Well Pine, if you gonna be leader, you need to defend yourself,”
  103. “But shouldn't you be a leader?”
  104. “Well, That's said and done, Pine, come with me, I’m gonna teach you how to hunt,”
  105. Blue started walking and Pine trailed along, smelling the blooming flowers along the way
  106.
  107. Part 2:
  108. Snow fell, the winter's breeze was like a sharp knife on their noses, they looked ahead at the empty plain. Blue's amber eyes looked at his father’s just as white as him.
  109. “Pine never wants to play, or hunt.” Blue whispered
  110. “That little spoiled rat isn’t strong like you,” His father replied “He’s weak, You’ll be leader,”
  111. “I know dad, I try to make him stronger but he just isn’t”
  112. “I taught you well, You should try to get that confused leader of his father to make you leader,” He whispered
  113. Blues ears perked up as he saw a rabbit, his warm brown coat stood out among the snow. He readied himself to strike looking at his father.
  114. “Go,” He said quietly
  115. He ran through the snow kicking it up as he ran, straightforward and to the point. He was quick as his eyes locked with the rabbits. The rabbit tried to run but it was too late as he readied himself to bite its neck. The rabbit kicked, hitting blue in the muzzle, panging thought out like little thorns causing him to flail around in the snow huffing in anger as the rabbit ran
  116. “Son, I thought you better than to let some rabbit get away from you!” He growled at him “I’ll teach you a lesson in hunting” His father's pouncing on top of him confused blue as they thrashed. The two trying to switch between prey and predator knowing one would come on top. Blue felt teeth on his left ear, His father chewed and nippled like it was meat until it ripped off. Letting out a yelp echoing throughout the forest like a part of his soul was lost Blood spilled on the ground causing it to become an eerie crimson. His father spit out his ear, hitting the snow. Blood running down Blue’s left eye blinding him.
  117. “You better be the hunter before you become the prey,” He said
  118. Blue looked at him, nodding as the winter breeze hit his fresh wound.
  119.
  120. Part 3:
  121. Pine looked at Blue as he walked in front thinking of what he was gonna do. Blue’s walk was proud and with a stomp. quick and ready to go with a pep in his step.
  122. “Pine, Why didn’t you just hunt when you were young, You sat there doing nothing. Because of course you did, Your father spoiled you.”
  123. “Dad didn’t spoil me…”
  124. “He did, You gotta face that honestly. I gotta teach you, to allow you to play catch up, because you're an idiot and you didn’t do what you were supposed to,” He spoke in a gentle voice. worried but standoffish
  125. “Blue, He never should have made me leader,”
  126. “Honestly, Pine you're pretty smart, I don’t care, dad does. I care about you though Pine, You're just unsuited to be a leader, but I can make you one.” Blues voice counted its tone.
  127. “Alright, Blue,”
  128. They got to the plain. The spring air was clear on their noses, flowers crisp as they huffed with baited breath. they watched the trees move with the cool wind, the noise from them was apparent as no other sound was heard
  129. “Now stay quiet Pine, And wait, You hear me?” He growled
  130. They watched as seconds turned to minutes then hours.
  131. “Now Pine, You gotta run fast and strike cleanly,” he whispered
  132. “No you should sneak on them, It gives you an easier kill,”
  133. “Pine, Just do it my way its effective you don’t know anything,” he grumbled
  134. They watched a rabbit hob along the Plain, The grass was short, just starting to grow so it stood out like the prey that it was.
  135. “Now watch, Alright,” He started to run at the speed of lighting. Quick and athletic, His white coat stood out among newly found life yet the rabbit did not notice. Pine watched with fear in his eyes. Then Blue attacked its neck, ribbing it clean open like meat with no care for its life. Blood dripped down his face as the once green clover turned a sickly red.
  136. “See dad taught me that one!” Blue said with great joy in his voice
  137. “I don’t really Like that blue,”
  138. “Come on you eat this stuff all the time, What are you talking about…”
  139. “I don’t know just watching it die like that its... “
  140. “Pine, You eat stuff like this all the time. Come on you’re pretty weak if you can’t handle a kill,” Blue looked at him confused
  141. “I don’t know, I just… I don’t wanna do that,”
  142. “At Least my dad didn’t spoil me with things I didn’t kill my self,”
  143. “Alright Blue,”
  144. “Lets go, You gotta be stronger, Your pretty dang weak for an adult wolf,” Blue growled
  145. Pine looked at the rabbits dead body in his mouth, disheartment in his eyes.
  146.
  147. Chapter 4:
  148. Hazel eyes looked sharp at the wolf ahead, fear spelled Pine’s mind as he readed himself to attack. Every second he looked his heart thumped like a thunderstorm and then some. He readied himself to strike. his technique was without nuance, Yet he still tackled him knocking him down.
  149. The big wolf looked at him “Good Job Pine, You’re getting better”
  150. “Yeah…” Pine nodded as he looked at his father he nodded slowly looking right thought him
  151. “That's enough for today,” His father said then walking away
  152. Pine went back to thinking as he heard the cicada sing its song and the summer sun shine down upon him. He thought about his father’s violent way’s and how he’s becoming more violent as his training goes on. it scared him like no other. He couldn't help but feel he was becoming more corrupted with each session. Until he heard a loud panting come from behind him he looked with his soft glare, yet there was a dash of fear as he saw it. Blue’s once pristine snow colored maw covered in blood.
  153. “Pine, You gotta see what happened” He said in a panic
  154. “What happened Blue, is everything ok?”
  155. “No not at all, But I can’t say it in front of the pack, I need your help Pine,” His golden eyes shook, the spark in them was gone, they seemed to be in a haze.
  156. Pine ran behind Blue as he then saw it. Pine gasped. Blue’s father lay there as his neck had been torn to shreds. The blood on the long wheatgrass was like a haunted ruby, a cursed color that pine will never forget. His eyes locked with Blue’s father's amber eyes open and unblinking life sucked out of them frozen in time.
  157. “Blue, What did you do!?” Pine yelled
  158. “Dad and I we’re fighting, and I overreacted and, and, and,”
  159. “Blue, It's ok, Just give me a second on what we should do, Alright,” Pine said trying to stay calm.
  160. “Ok, Ok, I trust you,” Blue said, his voice shaking.
  161. Pine thought for a moment looking at Pine with discomfort in his eyes knowing his friend was a murderer, He couldn't make a choice, many things rushed through his head, hiding the body, just telling nobody. Pine sighed knowing his father would have the answers
  162. “I’m gonna tell dad Ok? Things are gonna be alright, Just try to take your mind off of it”
  163. Blue started to sob, looking at Pine with baited eyes. “Are you sure?”
  164. “Yes i’m sure,”
  165. Pine started to run to tell his father, He looked at him trying to remain civil and polite
  166. “Father, Blue… Murdered someone,”
  167. “Whom?” He said calmly
  168. “His father,”
  169. His father nodded “Let me see him,” His voice was unnerving due to its peacefulness
  170. Pine ran over and got him
  171. “Sir, I didn’t mean too, he was attacking me back, I really didn’t, I just,” Blue’s voice shuttered in woe
  172. His father nodded listening along
  173. “I know, I made a mistake, but he was going to kill me,” Blue said
  174. “No more, Go, you’re exiled,” His voice was stern, unmoving.
  175. Blue started crying “Please, No, I know it was self defense.”
  176. “I don’t care, Your a danger to the pack,” The leader said, “Go before I make you,”
  177. Blue looked at Pine with an unrelenting glare, growling at him “I hope you’re happy,” he said walking out.
  178. Pine watched as he walked, confusion and sadness in his eyes.
  179.
  180. Chapter 5:
  181. Autumn's weak breeze glazed past his coat. It blended in with the brown and orange hues of the woods around him. He led the wolves down the trail. He looked ahead and behind him.
  182. “Father, Why do I have to lead the pack?” Pine asked
  183. “Son, I thought you learned to do your duty and not ask questions,” He said calmly “You know this is your right of passage” He said
  184. Pine looked ahead lost in thought glazed eyes marked another day of aimless wandering of the mind. He heard sounds come from the dying brush. He looked and he froze. It was him, amber eyes and all.
  185. “I found you!” Blue said angry
  186. “Blue, Are you ok?” Pine asked. Blues once pristine snowy coat was covered in grim, he looked rough as a freshly killed animal. His fur like thorns and his coat ragged
  187. “No, You were a little tattle tale, And you tried to get rid of me so you could become leader!” Blue yelled at
  188. Pine looked at his father slowly. His eyes asked for help. His father looked at him shaking his head
  189. “Blue, Calm down ok?” Pines voice shook
  190. “No!” Blue lunged at Pine causing him to hit the ground panging his head as he hit the muddy floor.
  191. “Blue I don’t wanna hurt you,” Pine said trying to remain calm
  192. “Why don’t you, If I'm a ‘danger to the pack’” He said looking right through Pine “I know you better than anyone. I was suppose to be your guide, your helper And you abandoned me and told everybody”
  193. “Blue, I don’t know, I don’t know”
  194. “Of course you don’t,” He said striking again right for the neck Pine stopped him and threw him to the ground Pining him Blue struggled and thrashed in his paws
  195. “Pine, You were my friend… You’re all I had,” Blue started to sob repeatedly it seemed to never end. He strikes back, freeing himself from the lock of Pines' paws, Pine not thinking, digged into his neck, sharp and the taste of blood flowed thought his mouth as his life force drained. Pine stopped for a moment looking at what he had just done as death
  196. poured out of him as he yelped for breath
  197. “I love you,” Blue said looking at Pine as his amber eyes remained open forever more
  198. Pine started to cry as he felt the autumn breeze hit his newly mounted visage.
  199. He looked at the pack gasping, and then his father who nodded saying
  200. “Lets go, You’ve done good,” his father replied
  201.
  202. The end:
  203. “Father, was I in the right?” Pine asked
  204. “With what son?” His father replied
  205. “I don’t know, It just doesn’t sit right,”
  206. “Well it's time to become leader, go out there and be something great,”
  207. Pine looked ahead as the pack was cheering his name
  208. He was ready for his next mission.
