A good idea would be to test the mods in normal GM daily events, that'll give an idea on how competitive it is & if luck plays a big part.
(luck needs avoided)

What about this idea for the format (rough draft for now):

1. Bracket of 256 to start, goes all the way to the top 8 players.

2. Round Robin style for all 8 players.

3. Take the top 4, and put them in a bracket. These matches will be supervised and broadcasted.
Question of the week: If today is yesterday and tomorrow is yesterday, then what is yesterday?

It'll get a lot more than 256 entrants, so you'll need to scale it up to accommodate that.

It could be done by having several brackets initially to cut the numbers down to a more manageable amount.

3-4 brackets with 100 players in each sounds pretty good.

That happened in 2008, where 2 separate tournaments were held. One for blackbelt +, and the other for lowbelts.
Basically the whole thing was a fail.

I see no reason why we shouldn't let the noobs try their luck against the others, for many it'll be the only chance they get to play against them.
