A man who was a confidant of Adolf Hitler dies and leaves a fortune to make amends for his Nazi past--but his son has to search the world to find it.
Noel Holcroft is a foreign-born American citizen working in New York City as an architect. In Geneva he meets with a respected Swiss banker who tells him he has been designated to be executor of a huge 4 1/2 billion dollar trust fund designed to make reparations for the war crimes of the Nazis. Holcroft&#39;s father, who committed suicide in 1945, was a key Hitler financial advisor who became conscience-stricken about German war atrocities, turned against the Fuehrer, and covertly diverted Nazi funds to a secret Swiss account. Under the terms of the covenant Holcroft must locate the sons of his father&#39;s two associates so they can jointly activate their fathers&#39; account. They battle the sinister forces seem to be trying to prevent them from signing the document as it is believed that it will be used to establish a Fourth Reich.
The Holcroft Covenant takes its cue from a bestseller by the prolific Robert Ludlum. I&#39;ve read the book and it&#39;s pretty good, with lots of globe trotting adventures and some startling twists and turns. It also takes upwards of 600 pages to tell its complex tale. The film version misses out most of the events from the book, yet tries in vain to remain faithful to the key plot points.... however, any film which tries to tell a 600 page story in less than two hours is doomed before it even begins. There&#39;s no surprise that this film is a muddled, intractable, poorly developed misfire. The story involves an inheritance in Nazi money which falls into the hands of several German descendants in the 1980s. The money is supposed to be a sort of compensation payment for the suffering and misery caused by WWII, but some of the inheritors are evil people and intend to use the money for nefarious purposes. Michael Caine plays one of the inheritors, Noel Holcroft (hence the title), and he sets out to ensure that it is used for good causes, but he finds that various others will kill to keep him from getting his hands on his rightful share.<br/><br/>The film is a terrible mess, and it&#39;s only too apparent that those involved were in it for the money. Every single performance is lazy. Frankenheimer once made great movies like The Manchurian Cnadidate and The French Connection 2, but here he is guilty of directing a listless hodge-podge that bears no trace of originality or flair. Caine has made too many bad movies, but this ranks amongst the very worst. No questions about it: this is a surefire low point for just about everyone involved.
This one kind of lost me a bit. Still I like the way the ending came out. The giant conspiracy that 4 billion dollars was supposed to fuel does not come off in the end. I will say the conspirators aimed high.<br/><br/>40 years ago in the last days of World War II three German generals managed to siphon off a lot of Third Reich loot and stash it in some Swiss banks. With the interest it&#39;s now 4 billion dollars. What to do with that kind of bread?<br/><br/>That&#39;s what Michael Caine is wondering, he is one of the three sons of a German general. He and his mother Lilli Palmer fled Germany just before World War II started and he&#39;s been brought up American, though he&#39;s the most cockney sounding American I ever heard. When Michel Lonsdale Swiss banker brings him the news, it kind of hits him unexpectedly. What a lottery prize that even if we have to share it.<br/><br/>Share it he does with Anthony Andrews, German born and British raised with his sister Victoria Tennant and Mario Adorf who is a famous symphony conductor.<br/><br/>Someone&#39;s trying to kill Caine, but who and why? That is the complex possibly too complex puzzle of The Holcroft Covenant. The action is fast, but it seems at cross purposes with the story. It&#39;s a strain to figure out the who and why with the bullets flying fast and furious. In fact most of the cast dies.<br/><br/>Too much needless strain.
