  1. Your higher self is the being which incarnated you. It can be described as the part of you which doesn't fit into your body, and the part of you that always knows what's best. If you've ever heard of the "angel and demon on each shoulder" metaphor, the higher self is comparable to the angel. The higher self thinks collectively: doing what it urges will bring about the most favorable outcome for yourself and everyone around you, even if effects are not immediate.

  5. Contacting your higher self can actually be very easy. The most important factors in doing so are openness and honesty with yourself. Here's a method that works for many in establishing the connection, called the door method:
  6.
  7. 1. Envision a door in your mind that you are holding shut, with your higher self on the other side. Don't think about what it looks like or anything like that; just consider it someone on the other side of the door.
  8.
  9. 2. Take your hand off the door handle, or whatever you were using to keep the door shut. Ask if the being on the other side wants to enter your mind.
  10.
  11. 3. Feel the higher self's response to the question. If you get a chill, shiver, have "yes" come to mind, or just the feeling you should let it in, let the door open and get to know your higher self. If you feel a clench in your heart, a hot flash, or sudden uneasiness, leave the door be and wait for the right time to try again. You may not be ready to make contact yet, or there may be another reason contact is not the best option at the moment.
  12.
  13. -----
  14.
  15. What the higher self will tell somebody really depends on the person. Some will give their name and tell their history, some will just want to chat, and some will just...be there. They might be like you, or they might not...regardless, they are perfect role models for how you can be.
  16.
  17. There's also another part of yourself you should be aware of: the shadow self. It is comparable to the demon in the above analogy. The shadow self is not pure evil, determined to destroy you, or anything like that. It is merely an accumulation of all unresolved issues in your life. In response to one of those issues you may become angry, vengeful, sad, et cetera. If you suddenly get the urge to punch somebody who pissed you off, that's probably the shadow self flaring up. Acting on the shadow's urges will generally not feel quite "right". You'll get constricting feelings in your heart, hot flashes, and general uneasiness.
  18.
  19. The most important thing is to not doubt. I don't know how many times I've had to tell people that everything in their mind is real. It's right there! It is common sense that it's real and deserves your attention!
  20.
  21. Negative entities are a valid reason for caution, but they should not be a problem so long as you make sure you know who you're talking to. Talking with your higher self should feel pleasant, both mentally and physically. The advice it gives should be in favor of the collective good. Negative entities can sometimes hover around you: if someone radiates negativity, those entities are quite literally drawn to them. It is one's own negativity that attracts them. Just don't listen to them, and will that they go away.
  22.
  23. Over time you will get used to knowing what is what, and naturally begin to act as your higher self, sometimes not even needing to think to do so.
