While the abbot read from his psalter, his assistant, the new monk who had disguised himself with a cassock, smiled briefly as he peered through his eye lashes over the psalter that he too was supposed to have. He was not troubled by the lamenting of all the others; indeed it pleased him. "How foolish these people are acting!" he thought. "While they mourn me with such a flood of tears, I stand here alive and happy. All surely know that they are behaving like dunces." This was his silent prayer. I'll tell you what he was doing. With excited glances darting very quickly about, he wanted to see if somewhere he might catch sight of her whom he considered his lady.
