  1. Heavy rain poured from gray sky. Below it two people were huddled beneath an umbrella made for one. A girl and a man who protruded halfway into the pour. He stood heads above her dressed in a damp suit and a neutral expression. Winterclothed softness pressed against his arm and as he looked down his shoulder she flashed a smug grin overtop her thick wool scarf. Goosebumps ran up his neck and he averted his eyes. When she lowered her gaze back to the sidewalk a remnant of her smile remained.
  2.
  3. As many people as there were raindrops flowed past. Leers from an oncoming throng were broken up by intermediate passers by and their many umbrellas. Suddenly the girl tugged his sleeve and without further indication led him stumbling off the sidewalk into a streetside shop. As she shouldered open the door an estuary of scent formed where breadmaking fragrance collided with the rainy smelling air from outside. While fishing for his wallet he lingered in the entryway taking in chestfuls of the complementary scents then passed her a thousand yen note offhand. She jogged off to the counter and pressed her face into the display case. As her gaze drifted hungrily from pastry to pastry the impression her breasts made against the glass drew covert glances of a similar kind from the clerk.

  7. One hand crumpled and pocketed a bakery bag and the second entwined with a third that was smaller and paler. Its owner was leaned in against the man's side, staring attentively at the viewing wall of a public aquarium. With her free hand she idly fed herself a croissant she was too busy at present to bite. Her legs trailed off from the ledged platform on which she sat and reciprocated back and forth just short of the ground.
  8. Inside the tank a school of fish parted as a shark lumbered harmlessly through. A child vignetted against the glass pointed and tried to show his mother but by the time she looked up from her phone it had gone out of sight. He made a longing sigh. Their hushed discussion of the event was nonetheless loud enough for most of the spectators to hear.
  9.
  10. He was bigger than this whole room.
  11. Was he?
  12. Almost! He snuck up on the fish, I think just to scare em. I wish you woulda seen.
  13. Wow... we'll stay a little longer and see if he comes back.
  14. Okay!
  15.
  16. Toward the center of the room the girl made a muffled noise of amusement through a cheek distending mouthful of bread and covered her lips. When she had swallowed she spoke into the man's ear.
  17. In a minute let's go in the tunnel.
  18. He nodded and made as if to unlink their hands but she wouldn't. Eventually the shark did wander back into view and while those viewing were fixated on it she pulled him along to the exit.
  19. The entry zone for the tunnel was bare of attractions except for an unattended exhibit of crustaceans surrounded by informational placards about the aquarium. The man stood aside with his arms crossed as the girl read through them.
  20.
  21. Says here this aquarium was the first to cohabitate sailfish and tuna.
  22. One giant leap for mankind. Uh, hey-
  23. Hm! Says here there's eight million liters in the main tank.
  24.
  25. Though she had pretended not to hear him she turned an ear in his direction acquiescently. He cut off the motion of what he was going to say with a wry smile and threw up his hands. Nevermind. She smiled and reconnected hers with his and they went into the tunnel.
  26. A monolithic arch of acrylic separated a world of water from the humans looking out at it. Teeming streaks of silver clustered in the immediate area were shoals of fish. A solitary manta ray glided in from the right on wings that rose and fell like placid waveforms. Colossal patterned sharks drifted upwards with gentle flexings of their bodies. Halfway down the tunnel the girl and the man had stopped. Families occasionally paused to see what they were looking at then moved on. The girl was looking around with wide awe filled eyes that smoothly tracked the paths of sealife. The man looked at her.
  27.
  28. Arcs of shifting refracted light danced on her rapt face and foamed in and out of existence down the countours of body. An eddy of filtered blue luminance struck across her eyes and glints of brilliance shone in her irises like they were backlit jewels. The shadow of the manta ray momentarily eclipsed her and took away the chaotically wimpling bands of brilliance so that the raw youthful beauty in her face could be seen naked. Then the shadow passed and they returned and made her smooth skin glow and her hair shine like mirror polished cobalt. He was staring now and she looked over a few degrees at him questioningly. Prior he had hidden their conjoined hands by sidling in closer to her. He tore his away now and as confusion bloomed on her face he leaned down and used it to pull her in at the waist and kissed her. She made a muffled noise of surprise against his lips then wrapped her arms around his neck. Someone down the tunnel whistled which caused soft laughter. As the man broke off he eased her back down onto the balls of her feet then rethreaded their fingers together and led her onward at a leisureful pace. He directed his attention at nearby fish as she cast flustered looks alternatively up at him then back at the floor.

  32. The dim quiet of his apartment was disrupted as the man switched on lights and the girl flopped onto the bed and switched on the TV.
  33.
  34. That was unnecessary, you know.
  35. Boss always says I go the extra mile.
