Anthology of nine short anime (Japanese animation) films tied in to the 1999 blockbuster "The Matrix" and its sequels. "Final Flight of the Osiris": The crew of the hovercraft Osiris attempt to warn their city of an imminent attack. "The Second Renaissance, Parts 1 & 2": The story behind the war between man and the machines, how mankind scorched the sky, and the creation of the Matrix. "Kid's Story": A teenager is contacted by Neo, and manages to escape the Matrix. "Program": Two warriors battle in a samurai training simulation when one decides to betray his crewmates and re-enter the Matrix. "World Record": A champion sprinter manages to break free of the Matrix by sheer physical effort during a record attempt. "Beyond": A young girl searching for her cat discovers a haunted house caused by a glitch in the system. "A Detective Story": Private investigator Ash tracks a hacker named Trinity through the looking glass. "Matriculated": A group of humans capture a machine scout and insert it into a 'human matrix'.
The Animatrix is a collection of several animated short films, detailing the backstory of the "Matrix" universe, and the original war between man and machines which led to the creation of the Matrix.
Fantastic visuals. This series of animated shorts are amazingly executed with immense creative talent. Each segment tells a new story in the Wachowski brothers&#39; MATRIX world. Four of the stories were themselves written by Larry and Andy and two narratives serve as background information directly related to THE MATRIX RELOADED.<br/><br/>What is truly amazing about these shorts is the animation.  Each segment was created by a different team of animators and hence has a completely unique aesthetic. Each story&#39;s individuality was achieved through a blend of visual mediums; some were pure animation, others CG, and some a seamless mixture of both.<br/><br/>This is the best overall animation direction I have ever seen since Hiroyuki Kitakubo&#39;s BLOOD (2000). The opening sequence to the KID&#39;S STORY short is breath-taking. It is without a doubt the best work I have ever seen in an animated feature.<br/><br/>The ANIMATRIX is a kick-ass blend of ROBOT CARNIVAL (1987), HEAVY METAL magazine, and the short lived MTV Liquid Television series AEON FLUX. If you are into anime and science fiction, this is definitely for you. You don&#39;t even have to be a fan of THE MATRIX films to enjoy this.  Without a doubt, a must see.
As inconsistent as the Matrix series as a whole, this collection of cartoons consists or 3 good episodes and a bunch of mediocre ones, and two of the three are one episode chopped into two parts.<br/><br/>The best episode is The Second Renaissance, a striking Matrix prequel about a robot holocaust that uses historical images to drive home its point. There is also a charming little episode involving a lost cat called Beyond.<br/><br/>The rest is eh. The first episode is inexplicably popular in user reviews, but it&#39;s just a bunch of action with little in the way of story, and I&#39;m not that excited by the video-game style computer animation. The final episode is vaguely interesting, but outside of the three I just mentioned, I feel this movie was a huge waste of my time.
