I remember the 11th of September,
Faces charred in dying embers.
I remember people closing their eyes,
Holding each other
As they died.
Pointless carnage no one understands,
Is it human nature we try to reprimand?
I remember my mom,
A pained expression in her eyes,
Worried about my dad,
Not sure if he had died.
The moment of silence,
The wanton violence,
And the thousand years war that would come to define us.
