- A couple of weeks ago, Berkeley city council was going to express their support for ending vaccine exemptions based on personal beliefs. However a group of anti-vaxxers took to city council chambers and convinced Mayor Tom Bates and some city council members to agree to postponing their support ending the personal belief exemption. California Senate Bill 277 will not end vaccine exemptions for medical reasons; if there is a valid scientific reason why a child should not get a vaccine, then the parent(s) has the right to refusal. The bill is only closing non-medical exemptions, based on personal belief. This bill should be non-controversial.
- The anti-vaxxers that spoke at city council spread the misinformation that vaccines cause autism. Studies have ended that debate; vaccines are not responsible for autism. City council is listening to false reasoning, and has delayed their support for the California Senate Bill.
- There is a strong counter-culture in Berkeley, a strong streak of rebellion. In many instances, the alternative attitudes in Berkeley can bring creativity, and innovation. But unfortunately, there are some aspects of the Berkeley counter-culture that embrace anti-science, including alternative-health fads, with no basis of medical support. In Berkeley, there is a fear of government intrusion, and those fears can often be justified. But there are times in which we as citizens have to agree to common practices as part of a social contract. Vaccinations need to be part of the social contract so we can keep ourselves and each other healthy from preventable diseases.
- California Senate Bill 277 leaves open any medical exemptions; it only refuses exemptions based on personal beliefs. Berkeley, as a city, often sets social trends which other California cities adopt. Berkeley city government would be sending the wrong message to the leadership of other cities and municipalities, if the mayor and council gave credence to the anti-vaxxer movement.
- City council will debate supporting CA Senate Bill 277 on the night of April 7th, during next council meeting.
