  1. IUN(the Institute of Upper Norton) is a sleepy university, where tuition isn't that expensive but you get a good education for the price. The atmosphere is an odd mix of community college and ivory tower. Professors have considerable independence, and can progress quickly to a research track, but are generally brought in as associate professors, and can only advance so far.
  2.
  3. The PCs are all frosh. They all happened to be in the Job Counseling Center waiting room at the same moment… the moment most of the room froze. They looked around, and saw only a handful of people(including each other) still moving.
  4. Then a white-robed figure stepped into the room, their face covered by a black mask with three red slashes but no facial features. Their voice was genderless and ageless when they spoke. "If you're even capable of hearing this, then you're above this… trash. Meet us at midnight in room 714." They then left the way they came, and the rest of the room unfroze.
  5. If the PCs get up to check, they find that way wasn't a hallway, but a nook for drinking fountains. A dead-end.
  6.
  7. Room 714 is in the botany building, and a dozen students showed up before midnight. Perhaps the "invitation" was given to multiple groups? There's a little time to interact. One girl brought her boyfriend, but otherwise the students were all "invited". When interaction dies down or grows too heated, the clock strikes midnight and two white-robed figures emerge from under the desk, one with one slash, one with three. The boyfriend is frozen. They both speak in that same placeless voice, inviting the assembled students to pledge to the Order Of The Twilight Eye.

  9. There are three dorms. Branson Hall is male-only, Haggerty Hall is female-only; either is covered by tuition. Harlowe Hall is newer, costs extra, and is co-ed.
  10. Steam tunnels spider under the university; students say they're haunted by Norton's ghost. Steam tunnel workers don't.

  17. Norton was originally Arduin Town, a company town built around Arduin Quarry, in America's early days. But when architectural fashion shifted, the quarry was abandoned as uneconomical. The town soon followed.
  18. In the early 1900s, Caesar Norton was looking to build his dream university, and chose the abandoned Arduin as its site. Unfortunately, the quarrying had disrupted the water table. Under new construction the ground collapsed, taking with it the eastern half of the abandoned Arduin Town, where Norton and his work crews had set up camp. 19 workers survived, but Norton did not. 7 bodies were never recovered, including Norton himself.
  19. In accordance with his will, Norton's family completed the university, and pocketed the rest of the money. Upper Norton was created as a university town on the uncollapsed ground. "Lower Norton" was originally a joke, but the town has indeed expanded to use the land that sits 20' below ground level. (It appears the subsidence has brought the ground down to a stable configuration.) When the town was properly incorporated, it was named Norton.

  23. I'm used to implementing sandbox arcs within a "here's your job, your boss says to do it, so do it" context by having the job be to collect some resource. No word as to how. Sometimes they deploy a get-rich-quick scheme to buy it, sometimes they try to steal it, sometimes they try to set up a new farm or mine or whatever, and sometimes they really surprise me.

  27. Do you understand why I think you'd be great at MH?
  28. Definitely not something with a map.
  29. You're good at slinging obstacles in a flexible context, so something HeroesActVillainsHinder, and nothing "hard"…
  30. Hm. If not MH, then something with a Mr. Johnson may be a good idea.
  31. But like, MH at uni.
