  1. Cosmic Metaphysics
  2.
  3. Something about the empty void of space or space travel would need to be inherently supernatural. Maybe sentient non-AI navigators are needed because they have an ability to "read the stars" and find a safe path while using faster than light travel methods. Maybe the empty space between stars is literally haunted by the ghosts of the billions of civilizations who never made it past the Great Filter, destroying themselves or dying to natural disasaters before they discovered space travel. Maybe stars and other celestial bodies have supernatural properties and can be tapped for aether or another form of magical energy.

  5. The Setting
  6.
  7. - The dominant forms of tech in the setting need to be intertwined with supernatural elements in some way. Weapons that draw power from personal aether, powerful drugs that straddle the line between science and mysticism a la Dune, etc.
  8. - Fuck having a ton of different alien races unless there's some way to make them actually meaningfully alien to human society and also not mono-cultures at the same time. Otherwise, I think most archetypes for different races can be covered by having humans with various degrees of genetic modification or people who prefer certain forms of mechanical bodies.
  9. - There needs to be something to make exploration of primitive or unsettled worlds meaningful, such as ancient ruins and relics, or planets where the fauna is for some reason dangerous enough to pose a threat to technologically advanced explorers. And a reason not to just nuke such places from orbit.
  10. - Giant space critters. Like space jellyfish. Yes.
  11.
  12. Various Thoughts on Classes
  13.
  14. - Martial class with extreme control over their own biology (in the vein of the Bene Gessert from Dune, for example). The ability to shut out pain, manipulate their voices or pheromones to affect other biological beings, move with superhuman speed and strength, etc
  15. - Martial class with lots of cyberware or full mechanical bodies. There shouldn't really be martials who aren't either extremely tricked out with the best tech, biologically engineered and trained to be the pinnacle of organic life, or both
  16. - There should be a range of other tech-based classes who fight with drones, vehicles, whatever
  17. - No generic casters. Only casters that are well-integrated into the metaphysics of the setting. Astromancers who draw on the power of the stars themselves and have different portfolios of spells when they're in different star systems. Channelers who collect the spirits of fallen civilizations as they travel between the stars. Technomancers if the setting's science allows for a reason why tech specifically can be manipulated by a personal mystical force. Etc
